A new type of automatic block slg nal which Is being used on an lnter urban electric railway west of Cleve land, O., is believed to furnish a solu tion of the problem of operating block systems in cold weather. During tbe last winter the various railroads ex perienced considerable difficulty owing to tbe accumulation of ice and frost on the signal lamps. Tbe lighting of the new signal Is provided by a single twenty-five watt tungsten lamp sup plied from tbe trolley through a resist ance. A high speed one-tenth horse power motor drives the mechanism, the motor being designed to operate safely through a wide variation of line voltage. Enough beat Is furnished by the lamp and Its resistance to prevent tbe accumulation of Ice on the lenses and mechanism. Bronzing Caet Iron. A German paper gives the follow ing process of bronzing cast iron with out covering It with a metal: Thor oughly cleanse the metal and rub It smooth. Apply evenly a coat of sweet or olive oil and beat the Iron, being careful that the temperature does not rise high enough to burn the oil. Just as the oil Is about to decompose, the cast Iron will absorb oxygen, and Mils forms upon the surface a brown oxide Ikln, which holds securely, and Is so Jmrd that It will admit of a bard pol ish, thus giving It the appearance of bronze. Pigment of gg Yolk. Two German scientists have Just Iso lated the yellow pigment from the yolk of the egg, the resultant being In the form of crystals. Investigations made Into the chemical uature of this substance point to Its being closely allied to the xnntophyll of withered leaves, which Is formed from the chlo rophyll. In this most Important scien tific study 6,000 hens' eggs were si multaneously treated, and these have yielded only sixty-two grains of puiv pigment. Repairing Broken Oilstone. A broken oilstone can be repaired and made as good as new In the fol lowing manner: Warm the piece by heating them on the top of a stove or gas heater, with n piece of heavy sheet metal placed on It so as to protect tbe stone from . tbe direct beat of the flame. Tbe beating should be done somewhat slowly or the stone will crock, says Popular Mechanics. When tbe stone is warm wipe off the oil which the heat has driven out and ap ply a couple of coats of shellac to the broken ends. When the shellac la thor oughly dry, warm the Btone again te melt the shellac and clamp the pieces together. After cooling the pieces will be found firmly stuck together. - Power From the Tides, Btudy has been made of a proposi tion for generating power for Schles-wlg-Holsteln by utilizing tbe ebb and flow of the tide, and work Is nnder construction. The Island of Nord ttrand Is being connected with the mainland by a high water reservoir of l.BOO acres and a low water reservqjr of 1,230 acres.
