Surface After It It Melted by Hot Water. The mining of sulphur In Louisiana Is an Interesting process. The sulphur depusit situated neur Lake Charles lies about 440 feet beneath the surface nnd is about 100 feet thick, feeds of quicksand overlying the sulphur ren der the sinking of shnfts Impossible, and the sulphur Is therefore pumped to the surface. A well Is driven through the numerous strata to the sulphur Impregnated beds in much the same manner as Is usual in sinking wells for oil and gas. In each well there are placed concentrically four lines of pipe, having din meters ranging from ten Inches to one inch. Super heated water and hot air are forced down the pipes and the spaces be tween them to melt the sulphur and to bring It to the surface. The hot water flows down between tbe two outer pipes, whlcb are respectively ten Inches and six Inches In diameter, and passes Into the sulphur bearing mass, melting the sulphur. The quantity of sulphur incited and the range of e tion of (he water depend on the tern ricrnture of the wnter and on the pressure at which It is supplied. The heavy melted sulphur runs back mto the sump around the bottom of the well pipe, which it enters through boles provided for this purpose. Hoi compressed air is forced down through the smallest or one inch pipe and ut tbe bottom of the well mixes with the melted sulphur and forms an aerated mass sudlclently low In specllic grav Ity to allow the water pressure to ele vate the-melted sulphur to the surface. where It Is discharged Into large rec- (angular vats, constructed of rough planking. The dimensions of the vats vary somewhat, hut they are made us large as 350 by 2"i0 by 40 feet, and ome or tnem are so arrangeu mat railroad trains can pass between them, After the sulphur has cooled and so- llditied It Is regularly mined the same as If It were a natural deposit. Aerial cnbleways have been used for manj purposes and with varying suc cess in different parts of the world, but probably unique In Its way is tbe Installation for timber transport at the New Hornow mills, in the Csambara mountains of German East Africa. and Its success during tbe last eight een months Is likely to encourage the provision of similar devices In other colonial timber regions where trans port 'difficulties exist The distance covered by the Installation mentioned is upward of five miles that Is, from the sawmills on the edge of the forest, situated at an altitude of 0,220 feet, and tbe nearest railway station, be tween seventy and eighty feet above the sea level. A log rood or other sur face line was out of the question la such a descent, especially as the rock of a treacherous character. How steep the cubleway Is in parts may be gathered from the fact that between Uie two angle stations ipe gradient is actually 41 degrees, which has been rarely exceeded anywhere In the world. Along this cable rough or sawed logs up to forty-six feet In lengtb and weighing one ton make their way down the mountain side to the railway station, and rails and other loads are hauled up to the sawmills. The construction of tbe cableway was an engineering fent of no ordinary kind and necessitated the erectlou not i only of the two angle stations mention ' ed, but also of two tension towers, and it is to be noted that some of the sup porting towers are of considerable height, one actually being as blgb as 100 feet. Steel had to be used through out owing to the danger of wood de stroying ants, but It Is Interesting In view of similar Installations which may be put up that the whole work was curried out by unskilled native la bor under the direction of the Eu ropean engineers.
