Editor Courier: As I look over

amount of trouble that everyone
is having just now, in getting
signers to the numerous initiative
petitions that are being circulated
through the state, I wonder why
tho present plan of putting the

not be made more simple and
easy and at the same time just as
satisfactory to all the people of

Cold Water Annealing.
The following method of cold water
annealing has proved to be highly suc
cessful on common grades of steel:
Heat the steel to a dull red and then,
holding It In a dark place until the red
disappears, dip it In cold water. It can
then be easily machined or tiled. An
other way of testing the "dipping'
heat Is to allow the piece to cool gradu
ally, at the same time rubbing the
steel with a pice of dry white pine.
When It Is nearly cool enough to dip,
small particles of charred wood will
rub off, stick to the steel and glow mo
mentarily. When this action ceases dip
the steel.

How to Clean a Cistern.
An easy and effective way to clean
a cistern Is as follows: Procure a hose
long enough to reach from the top to
(he bottom of the cistern and use It as
a siphon, the top end being placed In a
tub or large vessel of water. The low
er end of the hose Is nsed as an or
dinary hose nozzle under pressure for
washing the dirt and sediment from
the walls.
Taint was first used simply to beautify and to cov

added which give it the power to protect and preserve
as well.
There are paints and paints on the market. Some
of them answer the purpose for which they are in

It doesn't pay you to use them so in the long run it
