OREGON CITY COURIER, FRIDAY, JAN. 5, 1912 7 OR, SUN HEAD OF CHINESEJEPUBLIC American Chinese Accepts the Presidency of New Govern ment in Far East. Shanghai. Dr. Sun Yat Sen, the American Chinese who has been elected to and accepted the presiden cy of the Chinese republic, will, with in a few days, be Inaugurated at Nan king, the scene of what was one of the bloodiest battles in. the Chinese fight for the overthrow of the Manchu dynasty, and which city is now the provisional capital of the new gov ernment. Dr. Sun says he believes there is no doubt that the republican form of government will be selected in prefer ence to a constitutional monarchy by the convention of delegates from the different provinces now assembled at Nanking. Pie also declares that the future internal peace of China is as sured, with hundredfold increase in foreign trade. Sun Yat Sen's election as president of the republic means that the peace conference between Wu Ting Fang and Tang Shao Yi is closed. The president will assume charge of all negotiations. The present government practically is a military dictatorship and there is every evidence that , Dr. Sun is the most competent man available to head It. He appears absolutely in control of all factions, from students to conservatives. He also is a central figure In the secret societies in China, which have a membership of 30,000, 000. Councllmen Lose Seats. Salt Lake City, Utah. Salt Lake City passed under the commission form of government when Mayor S. C. Park and four commissioners were Inducted into office. Five holdover councllmen, whose terms did not ex pire December 31, were legislated out of office by the change to the com mission form of government. That "ErneBt Riblett," the name en graved on the watch carried by the murderer of the bank president is that of a boy who formerly lived at Bucoda, Wash., and that the young criminal is possibly the man who, single-handed, held up three other banks in the Pacific Northwest, in December are late features in the case. ' AMPERES, VOLTS AND WATTS. Broadly 8peaking, Amperes Indicate Volume, Volts Measure Pressure and Watts Show the Resulting Quantity, The Kilowatt Hour. It has been est 1 ma led that the time and labor wasted by those engaged In selling electricity In trying lo muke tbelr customer understand a kilowatt would suffice to build n fuu. of pyra mlds fruui New York to Sun Krunclsco, writes Allen Hollls. The discouraging feature of tbe tusk is tbul after all tbls effort the customer still remains lgno rant aud cherishes the delusion Unit the method of electric measurement Is a devious device for concealing nefiirl ous practices by the electric light com panles. The average American Is perfectly satisfied to buy pus by the foot, trims portilllou by the mile and telephones by the month, bin watts look suspicions and kilowntls totally depraved. This difficulty might have been uvolded it the eminent scientists who first adopt ed these accurate and to them conveu lent terms bad been willing to show the rest of t lie world how to compute electric quantity In feet and Inches or barrels and quarts, lacking this, peo ple are left to struggle with their mys terlous method of measurements. Tbe kilo Is an old fi end lor ancient enemy. If you wllli borrowed from tbe metric system. This leads to tbe definition of a wntt. But In order to know watts one must first learn about the two other mem bers of the family, amperes rind volts Broadly speaking, amperes measure volume, volts pressure and watts the resulting quantity. In order to get a tangible Idea of the ampere, electricity may he com pared with water flowing through a pipe. Id this Illustration the ampere will represeul the volume ot water. which Is determined by l lie size of the pipe, but this should not he confused with tbe size ot the electric wire, which has nothing to do with the pres erit problem The ampere then meas ures the volume of current tluwing In the wire at u given time. The quanti ty of energy flowing will depend upon the other factor, which is expressed in volts. The volt may be considered tbe meas ure of pressure or Intensity. In the illustration of water flowing through a pipe tbe pressure Is commonly express ed In pounds to the square Inch. With electric energy the same idea Is ex pressed In volts. It Is evident that the quantity of water flowing In a pipe of a given size will increase as the pres sure Increases. In a similar way the quantity of electricity increases In ex act proportion to the electric pressure of voltage, and this quantity Is meas ured by watts. The' quantity (wattsi of electricity delivered over a single circuit Is the direct product of the volume (amperes) multiplied by the pressure (voltsi. In other words, amperes multiplied by volts equals watts. Tbe Illustration serves to Indicate the theory of electric measurement It Is likely, however, to be misleading un less the fact Is kept In mind that wa ter Is material, while electricity mani fests Itself only through Its capacity of affecting visible things it heats the filament tn an Incandescent lamp and gives us light. It turns our motors. It magnetizes telephone and telegraph Instruments, but always It conceals Its own personality. In order to know what a watt ac tually Is It Is necessary to ascertain what It will do. t A thousand (kilo) watts are the mechanical equivalent of one and one-third borsepower-that is, a mechaulcal horsepower equals 740 watts of energy. Lighting circuits usually carry 110 to IL'O volts. An or dinary sixteen candle power lamp takes a little less than half an ampere in volume and consequently consumes about fifty watts of current. With the tungsten lamp the rating by watts in stead of candle power has been Intro duced and bids fair to become uulver sally adopted Being thus furnished with u stand ard of measurement It Is necessary only to multiph Hie amount employed icommoiiiy -aiien "vm-i ltv" by the number oi Honrs ot u- to uei the ac tual qimiitltv -iiti--iiii-tt in wnt i hours. Tabriz, Persia. A nine-day siege of llhis city by the Russian troops result ed in its complete occupation by the IRussian forces and the dispersal of the combatants belonging to the 'con stitutional progressive party or Fidals. Numerous casualties were sustained by both sides, the Russians alone los ing from 100 to 200 men, while the losses of the Fidals were severe. In the fighting an enormous amount of damage to property was done and the American flag floating over the United States consulate was shot down by a Russian shell, which, how ever, did no further damage to the consulate. Reports of atrocities said to have been committed by both sides are en tirely unfounded, the mortality among the native non-combatants being small. McManigal on Way East. Los Angeles. Ortle E.
