Dual Personality Cause of

Looks Like a Long Fi6ht.
The fight over the state university
referendum petition is settling down
for a long drawn out ooutost, aud '.it
may be many weeks before it is disposed.
The opposition claims fraudulent
signatures to the petition, while the
state admits there are many forgeries,
yet tiiere are more than enouuh valid
ones to make It legal.
The quoHtion is whether it is no to
those filing the petition to prove the
egality of the signatures or whether
it is ap to the opposition to prove the
forgeries.

IT is pretty generally accepted nowadays that there are TWO
FORMS OF CONSCIOUSNESS. The lower of these is
, that part of the consciousness which is half submerged, which
is ever HALF ASLEEP and which does not arouse itself
until some EMERGENCY calls. Then it becomes the upper or con
scious layer of the mind.
To illustrate this explanation of the theory of consciousness we
may say the lower stratum of consciousness is that portion of the
brain which is at work without our being fully AWARE OF IT.
It is the part of the consciousness which tells us of certain things
which are going on about us, but upon which our attention is not at
the moment CENTEEED. For instance, in . a certain way I may
bo aware in a hazy way of the noise which comes in to me through
the window, although I am not acutely conscious of this noise until
my attention is directly centered upon it.
Now, in certain individuals there may not be two conscious con
sciousnesses. When such is the case we have what is called a MUL
TIPLE PERSONALITY. Only one of these consciousnesses is at
work at one time.
THE ONE ORDINARILY ACTIVE IS THE ONE RECOGNIZED A3
THE PERSONALITY OF THE INDIVIDUAL IN QUESTION; THE
OTHER, RARELY COMINQ TO THE FRONT AND SWAYING THE
PERSON'S ACTIONS INTO COMMITTING A CRIME OR SOMETHING
EL8E OUT OF THE ORDINARY, MAY APPEAR TO BE A TOTALLY
DIFFERENT PERSON, HAVING NO TRAITS IN COMMON WITH THE
PERSONALITY WHICH WE ARE IN THE HABIT OF ASSOCIATING
WITH THIS PARTICULAR BODY.

CH ROUGH A LACK OF PROPER EXERCISE THE AMERICAN
BU8INESS MEN AND WOMEN ARE DETERIORATING.
Men and women do not notice this slow chango in their
mental and physical condition, but it has been found that
the average American of the workaday world is not the VITAL,
ALERT PERSON OF MANY YEARS AGO.
Men and women are deteriorating both mentally and physically.
The physical condition reacts on the mental, just as tho mental has its
effect on the physical. Set one in order and you have easier work
with the other. Just now it is the PHYSICAL SIDE that nevds
attention more than the mental.
There are many reasons for this lack of physical strength and good
condition. In the first place the young people of today are generally
born of parents who have both worked. The mother has worked the
better part of her life, and the father has stood the wear and tear of
the STRENUOUS AMERICAN BUSINESS METHODS. This
might be all very well had either of the parents taken tho right care
of his or her physical condition.
Schools have seenkthe necessity of exercising the children, for tho
parents do not know how. If it is necessary for school children to
have exercise regularly given every day while they are sitting at their
desks, it is just a3 important, if not more so, that the men and women
who work every day in CROWDED OFFICES should have similar
exercise.
