Montanan, Recently Retired
From Senate, Succumbs to
Lung Infection.
Washington Ex-United States Sen
ator Thos. H. Carter, of Montana, for
years a noteworthy and picturesque
character In National politics, once
chairman of the Republican National
Committee, and since last year chair
man of the American International
Commission, died at his Washington
residence early Sunday of Infection
of the lungs. He was 57 years old.
Mrs. Carter and their sons, stu
dents ofvGeorgetown University, were
with him when he died. The funeral
was held Tuesday at St. Paul's Ro
man Catholic Church. Interment was
at Mount Olivet Cemetery, this city

WARRANT OUT, FOR LAWYER
John R. Harrington Sought on Con
tempt Charge.
Los Angeles. A warrant was Issued
charging John R. Harrington, a Chi
cago attorney allied with the defense
of the McNamara brothers, with con
tempt of court for having refused to
answer questions before the grand
Jury. ' . t.
The warrant, according to A. L.
Vletch, district attorney, Is the first
of a aeries planned by the prosecu
tion to put a stop to alleged attempts
to Intimidate or Influence witnesses
for the state at the coming trial of
the v accused dynamiters.
FOOD RIOTERS ARE -KILLED
IN VIENNA
Vienna. Traceable to the high
prices of the necessities of life, riots
broke out and many persons were
killed or wounded. Troops fired on
the 'mob, which had erected, barri
cades In the streets. There was a
fierce exchange of bullets and the
soldiers were pelted with all sorts
of missiles.
Following a huge Socialist demon
stration outside the Rathhaus held In
protest against the high prices of
food, troops were ordered out to dis
perse the crowd. In the early clashes
60 civilians were wounded and 100 ar
rested. '
The agitation is the culmination' of
months of bitter discontent over the
steady Increase In the cost not only
of food but of lodging, clothing and
all the necessities of life and, unless
Parliament takes action it Is feared
that development! of the disturb
ances will be very soon. - .

Great Lakes in the presence of 30,

torboat Dixie IV swerved from its
course, mounted the break wall that
serves to separate the liver from the
canal and Injured three persons, one
fatally.
Not to be outdone by the British
postal authorities, Postmaster Gener
al Hitchcock gave his assent to the
establishment of an experimental
aeroplane mall route between a
branch of the Brooklyn, N. Y., post
office and the aerodrome at Nassau
boulevard, Long Island, during the
International aviation meet, which
will be held there from September 23
to October 1.
The prevailing topic among Pacific
Coast lumbermen the past week was
the proposed merger of the tide
water mills of Oregon and Washing
ton, which is being promoted by Hen
ry J. Pierce, of Spokane, Wash., and
Brooklyn, N. Y. That the plan for
the gigantic consolidation Is meeting
with encouragement is demonstrated
by the fact that fully 65 per cent of
the lumber output of Western Oregon
and Washington is now represented
In the tentative compact.

President Taft spent the first four
days of the week in Michigan, apeak-
ing in Detroit, Pontlac, Bay City,
-Sault Ste. Marie, Marquette, Grand
Rapids, Battle Creek and Kalamazoo.
He will fill an engagement' Friday at
Peoria and from that oity will go to
St. Louis, where he will remain over
Sunday.
The latest statistics compiled for
the big leagues show that -the two
old reliables, Hon us Wagner and Ty
Cobb, are atlU leading the race for
batting honors in their respective
leagues. The Pittsburg shortstop baa
an average of .350 and the Detroit

Critics of Trust Decisions Aim
ed at in Course of Speeches
in Michigan.
Detroit, Mich. President Taft
plunged into the political phase of
his long trip through- the West and
delivered more of the" set speeches
which may have a determining ef
fect upon his future.
He chose the "trusts" for his sub
ject and outlined his position on this
fssue. In a second speech he an
swered the charge that he had used-
patronage to further his own enas
and challenged the men "who had
made the charge to come forward
and Join him in an extension of the
civil service policy to all appointive
offices under the Government.
The President announced his op
position to amendment of the Ameri
can anti-trust law designed to over
throw the "rule of reason" laid down
by the United States Supreme Court
in the Standard Oil and tobacco trust
cases and challenged W. J. Bryan
and all other critics of the court to
cite a restrain of trade which they
would condemn and which would not
be condemned under Chief Justice
White's definition of the law.
Mr. Taft added, rather significantly,
that persons who do not understand
the decisions and really do not un
derstand the law have had a great
deal to say about them.
Oregon Plan In Minnesota First Time
St. Paul, Minn. Daniel W. Lawlor,
former mayor of St. Paul, has filed
his affidavit with - the secretary of
state as a candidate for United
States senator, "to succeed Senator
Knute Nelson.- Lawlor filed for the
Democratic nomination, and Is the
first person to file under the Keefe
law applying the Oregon plan for
popular choice of United States sena
tors. '
FINANCIERS ARE ROILED
Oovernora Condemned for Criticising
Judge Sanborn's Decision.
New York. The financial district
Is condemning the action of the house
of governors, at Spring Lake, N. J.,
in taking exception to the Minnesota
case, and rebuking Judge Sanborn.
The governors declared that should
the United States Supreme Court up
hold the Sanborn decision the states
would be reduced to mere provinces
of centralized powers.
The Minnesota case will be the
first discussed with the United States
Supreme Court by the committee con
sisting .of Governors Harmon, Hadley
and Aldrich, but- similar cases In
volving the rights of states to make
intrastate railroad regulations are
now before the courts in Missouri,
Kansas, Nebraska and Oklahoma.
' Will Suppress Chinese Rebels.
Peking. Tsen Chun Suan, a piti
less suppressor of outbreaks and the
"Butcher Weyler" of China, has been
ordered to Szechuen to quell the re
bellion. The imperial edict contain
ing his orders la proof that the situa
atlon Is beyond the control of the
high officials here. .
NINE KILLED WHEN
RACER LEAPS TRACK
Syracuse, N. Y. In full view of B0,
000 persons shortly after President
Taft had left the state fair grounds,
a .big racing automobile driven by
Leo Oldfield, leaped from the track
and crashed through the fences sur
rounding it, and plunged Into the
throng . that lined the side of the
speedway, killing nine persons and
seriously Injuring fourteen others.
The accident occurred In the 43d
mile. DePalraa was leading by . a
lap, with Oldfield trailing him. Their
big cars traveling, it is estimated, at
75 miles an hour, were running side
by side as they shot past the stand.
As they took the turn there was a
report. The car driven by Oldfield
leaped into the air. Then it swerved
to the outer side and crashed through
the fence. The cripple machine, be
yond the control of, the driver, plowed
through hundreds of persons lining
the fence.
