New York. 'With cholera at its
gates, the health officials of New York
are taking more energetic precau
tlons than ever to prevent the disease
gaining a foothold in the city. Alle
gations of carelessness on the part of
the quarantine officials were freely
made and stringent regulations will
be adopted to prevent employes and
attaohes of the quarantine station
mingling with outsiders.
The first native case of Asiatic
cholera to develop here this season
ended In the death of Patrick Cush
Ing, night watchman at the Swin
burne Island quarantine station.
There have been several deaths
among Immigrants detained, and two
suspects kept for the required obser
vation period developed the disease
and died, but Cushlng Is the first
American resident to be Infected..
"The quarantine department oi
every port In this country Is facing
a very serious and onerous task,"
said Dr. Doty, "and it is not Im
possible that many vessels arriving
from Italy in the next few days will
bring one or more cases of the di
sease." A majority of the vessels which
have recently come from Italy have
either brought actual cases of this
disease, or furnished evidence of its
having occurred in transit. It is with
great difficulty that the latter con
dition is established, and it Is only
through the most exhaustive bacte
riologlcal examination that I am able
to secure the facts.

Oregon has a oilmate that is a great
asset, bnt this fact is not generally
reoosnized here at Ihome. It was lm

in Portland. R. A. Long, millionaire
lumberman of Kansas Oity, who
pledged a gift of $1,000,000 to carry
on the work of the churob, said the
Portland oonveution was the best in
the history of the organization, and
-wis due to the favorable weather
which made it comfortable tor the
rinlBantes at all times, so that the ses

speakers tired doll, as is so oiten
the case when the conventions are
held in eastern cities in midsummer.

Broom Corn In America.
Brooms and brushen wert made of

He planted these seeds aud raised

no systematic phiu of raising bronm
