OkEGON CITY COURIER, FRIDAY, DECEMBER 9, 1910 TRIP TO OGL E MOUNTAIN III Where Great, Quantities of Rich Ore are Being Brought, to Light, by Recent Operations Ulaokamos county is on the eve of the greatest awakening that could he imagined by the most far seeing, that will spread her fame from one state to another throughout the entire Paoiflo coast, and perhaps over the entire states, to tiie Atlantic. The dream of her citizens has come trne, and through the efforts of a few, there is anont to be opened to the world one of the greatest gold mines that have made famous the entire West. A reality has at last been developed and there remains but the work of a few more strokes of the air drill to reacii the great vein of gold bearing ore, for which men have toiled day and night, dlviug deep into the bowels of the earth, have worked nn ' der the greatest hardship, accomplish ing through hercnlean efforts what ap pears to the layman impossible tasks. The thoughts as above have been indellibly impressed upon the writer by a trip overland to the mines, which are located in the southeastern part of Clackamas ooonty, and abont fifty miles distant from Oregon Oity. Leaving Monday, November 14, trav- develonment work and studying the ore, its ontoroppings and veins with a view of reachinc the mother lode. Outcroppings of free milling gold were found at or near the top or the monu tain and some worK was nut in there. Later, a few hundred feet down the slope a tunnel was made and some ore taken out. the same veins appearing then about four hundred feet down tlm hillside another tunnel was driven into the mountain for a distanoe of over six hundred feet and veins were followed north and south, for a few hundred feet, and much ore was taken to the mill and concentrated, lioliev ins these veins to grow in value deep er into the earth, the management planned another works ana the pres ent tunnel at the base of the ruouu tain was started about 18 months ago. This hole is now over a quarter of t railo lona and has crosscut the same veins as have the upper tunnuls, only that in every instance each vein .is many times doubled in thickness, and value, until neariug the supposed location of the mother lode, where at the prefent time work is being carried V -J- l . ' i iff Examining Big Lumps of Ore Just Out of the Mine eling by wagon and on foot, we reached camp Wednesday evening. The trip overland is ot the greatest Interest, through the great timber belt of the Cascades the last half of the trip, camping neath the towering giants of the forest where the danger of timber wolves is yet not a thing of the past, and where one may run onto the fresh footprints of a cougar, bear or deer. However little disturbed our peaceful slumbers and aside from the two pairs of eyes that glaied at us from out of the darkness, there wsb naught else to mar the joyous liours around the timber camp. A bed ot fresh fir boughs and gathering wood for the fire at night ooonpiod but a short lime and then the campnre and teaming coffee and we were.ready to take a well earned rest after twelve hours of tramping to reach the five thousand feet elevation locally known as Lookout Mountain. Up before daylight, we were off in a bunch. The orisp mountain air gave us froshnesn and a renewed ener gy and made us forget the tenelur spotB, covering the remaulug twenty on, and where the oompany have found their expectations to bo more than was the most sanguine wiBh, ore having beon found at various points in the tunnel that will run four to nine dollars to the ton, with one, a ten foot vein, running about nine dol lars to the ton, with well denned walls. This in itself is a mine of great value, and alone would cause a stampede to Klondike if located there. These veins measured 81$ to 15 feet in width. At the face ot the tnnnol, where work is now going on, excel lent ore in extended veins is being daily unoovered, which when the proper maohinery has been iiiBtalled will run values up much higher thun anything that has been struck hereto fore, as the mineral appears in much more solid form and is glistening with silver, lead and iron in millions of cubes that run heavy to gold. From the upper works ore has been taken out and run through the teu stamp mill and concentrators aud there is now many tons of concen trates on hand in the bins which have a value of over 75 dollars to the ion i- I li.'-ipr III. '"-A! I Tunnel House and Low Grade Ore Dump, Tom Fairclough With Team Hauling in Winters Wood miles In time for a good hot dinner at noon At the mining cnmr., whore we were met by a "hoo hoo" of welcome Joined In by all, even to "Fritz," the camp dog and pet of the hunch. The property of the Ogle Mountain Mining Company consists of about sixteen claims located in the south half of section 9, township 8, range 4 cant, and lies almost entirely ou the western slope of the mountain bearing the same name, secured by the present oompany some several years ago, who have since devoted their energies to ami which will be run out when the proper machinery has boon installed. The mine is just at the present t i mo ready to begin work ou the air shaft, which will bo nearly a thousand feet in height and then the stopitig work will begin, and ore from the lower tnnnol will begin to flow into the null, where it too will be worked and the values secured. The proper machinery is yet to be decided upon, as the ore is presenting a change, and jnst what is needed to secure the greatest values from this John B. Faircloug and John Hale Spanning Twelve Foot Solid Ore Ledge. Solid Vein of Nine Dollar Ore. new ore is vet to be determined, as it contains heav.v loads of silver, lead and iron, bearing gold in unusual quantities. The plant of the company is exten sive and very complete for the work which has been carried on, and con sists of the usual apartments for eat iug and Bleeping, separate buildings well fitted up, the tunuel building, barns, assay building, store houses, saw mill and stamp mills, concen trators, blacksmith shop, etc.. etc., all of which is as complete a working proposition aB one could ask for aud entries' on tlie regular needs of the businoss with the very smallest amount of labor and time. Gettina back to the subject of ore, one is impressed with the values to be fonnd in every vein, and at the face of the tunuel where the great air drill is hammering away at the rate ol eight hundred strokes per miuuta and where the work is being 'poshed with the greatest speed, there is to be found in the veins just what the man agement lias been anticipating, solid ve'ns of ore resembling the supposed mother lode, which are taken to be leaders of the true lode, and these are rich in ore and it is not overestimat ing the proposition in the least to state that tin Bl mother load when struck will run from four to fifteen feet in width aud contain a solid min eral varying in values estimated to be from one to three hnudrel dollars por ton. Iu referenco to the veiiiB that Imvo bn rrcs-rut nrnrr the mouth of the lower tunnol, there is one im portant toature that is very apparent, aud that is that the great unknown quantities of what the company call low grade ore, which will run ut sev eral dollars per ton, may be milled at a very slight exponso, as almost its entirety can be taken to the mill ou a gravity system, reducing the cost ot securing the values to a minimum, using what is kuowu as tne cyauuie process. The entire plant is ligntea Dy elec tricity, even to the tunnel, which reaches back into the mountain for over a quarter or a nine, ana presents a very citified appearance. The plant is at present in iuu op eration, running day aud night, and working at the mines may be toand a class of boys that are as fine a lot of fellows and entertainers as may be found in any oommuiiity.
