O.'Hackett has been with ns in Clackamas county all his life and has assisted in the upbuilding of our county and is a most worthy son thereof. , The Republicans have nominated him as their standard bearer for the office of sheriff, at the direct primary just held, and thus say that he is en titled to the support of the people and ot all loyal Republicans. He is qual ified to fill the position, having served as chief deputy for the late J. R. Shaver, and having exported the books for the county several times and for the state once. He is a believer in the direot pri mary and would like to see all offioers elected by a direct vote of the people, commencing with president ana com ing on down to constable. The onloe of sheriff now requires a man of some experience and ability and Hackett is the man who knows how. If yon consider the matter seriously you'll find it to your interest to vote for him. E. 0. HACKKTT. (Paid Adv.) A CAD BRdAK. That state experiment station offi cials now and then get their wires crossed has been shown lately in some disastrous results which have followed the use of commercial lime sulphur as a summer spray for apple scab in the Hood river valley. Used at a strength whlr-h wns considered safe by the directors of the Oregon Agricultural college, a serious burning or the leaves nnd dnmneine of the fruit have never theless resulted, and so serious is this damage that a quantity of the fruit of this noted section will be rendered sec ond class or worse. In the adoption of a new spray, as in the taking up of some other new things, changed con ditions under which the work is car ried on may greatly vitiate or render entirely useless what seem to be excel lent results achieved in other places. THE CORN ROOT WORM. Not In years has the damage from the corn root worm been so great as it is proving to be during the present sea son. In the state of Iowa alone it is estimated that the damage- from this one source will aggregate close to $20, 000,000. Fields that early in the summer gave promise of yielding sixty bushels per acre will be thought to do pretty well If they husk out fifteen. This pest is the legitimate result of a continuous corn after corn system of cropping and seems to be nature's pro test at a very prevalent agricultural abuse. The only effective remedy is a system of crop rotation in which some legume and the small grains shall have a prominent place, as the pest subsides when there are no more corn roots in which It may breed and feed. SIDNEY STORY Park Commissioner of New Orleans for fifteen years, and member of the Municipal Assembly for several terms, one of the most eloquent speakers in Dixieland, will speak in Oregon City, at the Opera House, Saturday Eve. Oct. 22, on ProhibitionlsNotTemperance" Mr. Story is the father of many reform measures, all of which are in effective operation both in New Orleans and other cities in the East and South. His address is one which every prohibitionist and church member should hear. ADFS0N The protracted drought through the upper Mississippi vaney country is well shown in the unusually low stage of water in the Father of Waters, the stage being the lowest of which there is any record, a half Inch lower than the lowest previous record of 1804. The Shropshire sheep is moderate in size, hardy and is probably more raised for general purposes than any other single variety. Like Toland-Chlna or Duroc-Jersey hogs, they are first class debt payers and mortgage lifters, and every farm should have a few of them. The King road drag holds about the same place with reference to the high ways that the primary election system does to political affairs makes the crooked places smooth and fills up the ruts and pot holes. Both instruments have a vital connection with good cit izenship. It is interesting to note that, while many a tabby cat may Keep pretty well away from the house In her state of single blessedness, she seems to understand human nature enough to know that when her little ones are presentable she will be accorded a friendly reception. A lot of farmers will fill silos this fall for the first time. A good many more will have to have a year or two more of slovenly and wasteful han dling of the corn crop to persuade them of the value of this best of all aids to successful stock raising and dairy management. Soil is very much like human nature in that when it has become depleted and degraded it seems to lose Its ca pacity for producing good and whole some crops, but can still furnish a har bor for sand burs, ragweed and fen nel, troublesome nnd worthless weeds that do nobody any good. The chief advantage of full plowing, aside from the fact that the work is done In good season, is due to the ex posure of the soil to air and moisture and the disintegrating effect of frost The beneficence of the service render ed Is Immense, yet often disregarded and too seldom taken advantage of. o) o) The Great Liver Tonic and Regulator That Has Done So Much for the Working People. As has been the case for some time past, a good mule is still worth from $10 to $15 per head more than a horse of equal grade and quality. In view of this fact and the further fact that there is less risk In bringing them to a marketable age, the mule business would seem bSiic on a pretty sound basis. How the Double Red Cross Originated Although the double red cross has been used in America for more than our years as the international em blem ot the orusade against tuberculo sis, lew people have known now u originated until announcement of the history or the symbol was made pnnnc by the National Association for the Study and Prevention of Tuberculosis it has been ascertained time wie double red cross was first suggosted sb the symbol of the International Anti tuberculosis ABBOoiation in Berlin in Ootober, 1902. The proposer of the symbol was Dr. O. Sersiron of Paris who is now assooiate secretary iy As sociation Oentrale Frunoaii-e Contre la tuberculosa. Dr. Sersiron 8 proposal was adopted at the Berlin meeting and a movement was at once started to secure official recognition and pro tection for the double cross from Bnronean covernments. The double red oross is similar in shane to a cress nsed frequently in the Greek Catholic churches, and al so to the Lorraine oross of Franco. The National Association for the Study and Prevention of Tuberculosis in the United States has adopted the proportion of niue for . the length of the cross to five for the width of the armrs. with a space one-ninth of the length between the arms. In 1902, when the double fed cross was adopted, there were not more than a half dozen associations for the nrevention of tuberoulosis organized on a wide basis. Today under the banner of the anti-tuberoulosis cru sade, associations have been formed in almost every oivilized oountry in the world. Even China is beginning to take aotion alone this line, while in Turkev. India. Janau. the Philip nines. South Afrioa. Australia, Ioe- lnnd. and in all of the European conn tries active societies are at work. In the United Slates, from four indepen dent associations in 1902. the double red cross now enlists a oarefuliy or ganized national movement under whioh are amiiatoa more tnan inirty state bodies and 420 local societies. If to these agenoies are added the lo cal, state and national governments enrolled in antl tuberculosis work, the double redjoioss becomes the sym bol of the greatest organized cam Daisn for the prevention of disease that the world has ever known. For a heavy winter coat or a hand some robe to lay before the fireplace not even the bison hide of bygone days surpasses in either texture or beauty the nicely tanned skin of a 1,200 pound Galloway steer. And it resembles the skin of the wild animal In tilts that it takes a good wad of money to buy one of them. The idea of renting trees Is rather outlandish, but there is a dealer In New York who is said to make a busi ness of rcnljng out bay laurels, which are about ten feet high, rooted In large portable boxes and exhale a pleasant fragrance in the rooms where they are displayed. The fee paid for the loan of these trees Is $20 for each occasion. Adam was the first tiller of the soil, but It remained for an Englishman of the name of Jcthro Tull to domon Btrate the simple fact that a deep and thorough tillage of the soil Increases the available plant food which it con tains. Ills aphorism, "Tillage is ma ture," has since been proved faulty In theory, though Its practical aspect Is now universally accepted. Any readers who may have set oat young orchards the past spring will do well to keep an eye on Jack rabbits which may have breeding places in the neighborhood, for we have found that they will not only eat the bark and twigs of young pear and apple trees durintr the dormant season, but will also nibble the tender leaves and grow lug shoots when there is an abundance of alfalfa and other herbage to be bad. The most expensive course through life is often taken by those who buy the cheapest of everything. It isn't the rule that the highest price must be paid to get the most serviceable dental materials, but the kind you should have naturally in accordance with the quality of other ser vices which your taste demands costs little more than the kind you don't want at any price and will certainly be worth many times the difference The best price to pay for dental work is the price of the best dental work.
