OLD HICKORY CHIPS The farm vote is more apt to vote as It reaps than as it sows. Rumor lias It that President Taft's favorite quotation Is "The World is out of Joint; Oh, cursed spite, that I was evr born to set it right." Some time Mr. Taft must fancy that it was all a dream; that "Teddy, the Terrible" Is still on the Job. The theory that people eat too much often has been exploited, but never proved. Perhaps some of them would If they had the chance, hut a benign protective tariff safeguards them. Business may not be as brisk as politics Just now, but it is surer of Itself. How prosperous Europe would be if It could pick two crops of American tourists each year. Why not give the precipitation of aviators In the dally weather report? Hofor out of the way aud concentrate on Judge Dimick for governor I ' That was the cry of the anti assembly Republicans yesterday when they read of the insurgent victories in Washington, a report that served to stimulate the insurgency of Multno- man oonnty to a high pitch. "Heretofore there has not been an inclination to regard Judge Dimick as high in the running, but the news from the state of Washington yesterday sent the anti-assembly itea off into the realms of oolored dreams. 'Mavbe we can beat- Bowerman after all,' said many. "So far as known, OoL Hofer has not been approached formally vet. but tremendous preBsnre will be brought to bear on hint shortly, so it is un derstood. " The above from the Portland Ore- gonian of yesterday, speaks the mind of the people in their choice for gov ernor, aud it is probable that Mr. Hofer will see the futility ot his con tinuing his candidacy, and withdraw to better place the situation in favor of oue candidate, that the assembly may more surely be defeated. Mr. Hofer has not been an ex tremely vigoarous oandidato, and having stated very early in the game that he positively would not make the race. He is a good newspaper man, is making good and will contin ue to pursue such duties with the greatest success, but as he has stated, ho'does not wish to ba governor ot Oregon. His anuouuoemeut of with drawal will undoubtedly be forth coming. It is gratify lug to the maiiv friends of Grant B. Dimick, the anti-assembly candidate for governor, to note the many expressions from the newspapers throughout tne state, in the euttern. as well as throughout the sou! horn portion, which are openly advising the people to coneeutraie their efforts on him as the choice if the people, advising that he is a sufe . man and will make a safe and sane executive. Every wnere (he words are spoken with the greatest siucerity aud with weight aud feeling, protteriug good ' advice. Self-prompted communica tions are ooutiuually pouring into. the omce or the Judge, and his many stauuoh frieuilB throughout the state are rallying around him at this time with the greatest assurance of his successful candidacy ground that his foot slipped. An investigation frequently devel ops a variety of reports to meet all shades of popular taste. Possibly the attic at Sagmore Hill Is being rummaged for one of those things that is difficult to understand. There Is always the right kind of weather In some parts of the United Slates, according to the weather map. The market reports from Elgin say "butter Is stronger." That Is why it Is able to lift Itself higher. Another comet is reported to be headed this way. It Is to be hoped that it will be better than the last one.
