Mr. Vivian, although cut on" in the prime of his life, was noted fcr his benoveh noe and charitv. and the or ganization of the society that held the odd name was intended for the social feature alone, but he very early recognized the benevolent aud. char itable side which has in recent years become a very pronounced feature of the Elks, it was the custom or mm and li s friends to meet late at night after the theatres had closed, as most of the original members were ot the theatrical profession, and this ex plain why the clock dial with the hands set at eleven o clock is one of the emblem s of the order. Iu a short time the membership in creased and the name was changed to B. P. 0. Elks, the ritual remaining nraotioally the same as it was origi nally, and from that small beginning the present order, wnicn is oue oi the strongest in the United States, originated. The order is one that is strictly American, and no lodge .nas been organized except on American territory, although there are lodges in Manila, Porto Rioo and Alaena. The local lodge will be known as Oregon City Lodge No. 1189 B. P. O. Elks. This is the birthday or tua or der as far as the local lodge is con cerned, and they have sent invita tions to all the lodges in the state whose members by the hundreds are in this city today.
