SMOKE PROM THE CAMPF1RES
We have mentioned the fact at vari
ous times tliac the Courier was not
dictated to bv any sot of moil or poli
tical clique, and just at this time it is
nnnnrtnne to jew at it with oniphnnia.
as it hears dirootly nnon tlie Courier's
selection of Oscar Eby to bo the
people's choice for comity judge. In
referring iiRiiin to Mr. liny as a prob
able oandilnto tiie Ootiri r is most
sinoore in its convictions that the com
mon people are looking for a man of
just his calibro, one who is competent
and one in whom thoir confidence
will not bo mispbicud, and was
prompted in its solection of liim by
no nintive strongor tnan that which
should prompt tho press, representing
the greatest number of people iu a
oounty, to advocate what is biiBfc in
its opinion for their futuro wolfuro
Thoro have boen drastic ellorts put
forth, olianipioued by supposed lead
ing dailies, to snuff out the llro burn
ing in l ho camps of tho common
peoplo, to hord them buok like sheep,
into the rings of tho master poli
ticians, by foisting upon thorn tho un
American plan of the selection of their
roproscnti.tivi-s Everywhere through
the state has the assembly plan of tho
few received its juHt reward, a (loath
blow. Clacltr.uius oounty is not bo
hlud and her peoplo wilt not waver
when it comes to the final tost.
Synonymous with the desires of the
peoplo to continue to havo fuir and
jnst'pnblio servants, conn s the selec
tion of Mr. Eby by the Courier, to be
the choice of the majority of the
people of the oounty for a continu
ance of a govorumont by tho peoplo.
SHOULDERS TO TIIE WHEEL
Tho poonlo of this city aro very
much grariliod at the move made bv
tho Commercial Club in- championing
the movoment started by the Courier
to take immediate steps in making a
tight ugaintit the onoicacliment of
Portland ami lior extension to our
very doors. If Port and desires to
extend her limits an opportunity lies
towards Mt Hood, not over into an
other county. The people of Oregon
City have now gone on record, through
its live commercial body as resenting
auy such proposed move and will light
any and all such propositions that
might lead to a division of the county.
Our city limits should be extended
considerable to the nortli and as stated
recently in the Courier, proper menus
for direct communication be provided
at once for the benefit of people liv
ing iu tho northern portion of tho
oounty.
Lot the crodit . fall whore it may,
look with an eye single to the results
to bo obtained by a union of strength,
working towards the good of all.
Wool growers of tho country will
gather at Portland iu 101 J, bringing
to this city a convention representa
tive ot a uroat industry. Delegates
to the rocout convention of tho wool
men at Ogdon from tuo Paoiflo North
went were a unit for Portland as tho
next uieetiug place and they onpturod
the gathering without serious opposi
tion. Ninety pur oont of the wool
growers of the country are members of
the organization uud tho convention
will bring thousands of visitors to
Portlaud Tho next mooting of tlio
national body will be held in Janu
ary, 1U11.

WHAT IT ALL MEANS
1 President Taffc is not dishonest, for
he emorged from a long career o'
ofllceholding a poor man. Ho is not
laekiig in intelligence, or be would
not have boon choibii for the ui'iny
important, plue;s he has filled, there
fore n grc.it in my peoplo aro puzzled
what to make of our exo.ntive.
At Winoni he declared the new tar
iff law to ho a "substantial revision
downward," and the hem tariff bill
tho country ever had. "
He used sumo figure a rrepared by
th somite commitrce on limine", of
which Senator Aldricli is chairman,
showing that the tariff was reduced
on necessary articles which the coun
try uses to the extent of $500,000,000,
a year, and increased only on neces
sary articles which tho country uses to
the value of $;JK),0IK),(K)0 a year. As
to tho increases, thoro should have
been none at all; and there were few
because prautically evny imedy unci
powerful interest already wan getting
all the tnriii' duties it needed.
It sounds well to say that tho tariff
wrts reduced on commodities which
tho country uses to tho vuluo of $5,
000,000,0(1(1 a year, but it moans abso
lutely nothing. Take an article which
the country uses to the value of $1,
000,00000,0' a year, and en which the
tariff duty is prohibitive Keduco
that duty -a triflo, though leaving it
still prohibitive. Tho president could
then say that the duty iiad been re
(I need on an article or which tho
country uses if 1,000,000,000 worth a
year j but there wiukl be no benefit
whatever from tho revision. Anil
that is exactly what tho pesideut did.
Either ho was hadly fooled by
Alldrich, or ho deliberately sought to
fool tho pooplo.
Will Pnyuo in the Saturday Evening
Post analyzes tlmt $3. 000, 000, 000 argu
ment, very satisfactorily.
Duties were reduood on petroleum
products, which this conn try uses to
the value of 2(!0, 000,000 a year. Yet
this country is tho groat extiorter of
pnti oleum products, mid free petrol
eum productT would not lower priors.
Duties were reduced on marble,
which is used to the extent of $84,
000,000 a year. Ts marble a "neces
sary V"
Morula and manufactures of metals,
which wo use to tho vnlno of $1,250,
000,000, were reduced, but prices have
gone up since the law went into effect.
This is because tho duties, combined
with this country's supremacy in
methods of manufacturing, are pro
hibitive still.
, Lumber was slightly reduced, and
that item amounts to .$500, 000, 000. If
the maximum rates apply to Canada,
the duty will bo enormously increased
instead of being reduced. Tho price
of lumber has not boon reduced by the
reduced tariff.
Hoflued sugar represents $!i()0,000,
000, and the (Hit v on that was reduced
so littlo that if tho benelit of the re
duction got to tho consumer he would
have to out an even ton of sugar to
savo a doll ir; yet tho price of sugar
has advanced since the law went into
effect. Tho sugar duties are still pro
hibitive. Halt a billion is represented by food
and argioultnrnl products, mostly ba
con, hams, pork and hoof of which
wo export V'lst quantities and import
little or nothing. These commodities
have also gouo up in price Tho rea
son: The duties uro still too high and
the products arc controlled by a trust.
Print paper represents $07,000,000.
Thoro was a very slight reduction ou
this duty, which still is practically
prohibitive, and if tho nmixnium du
ties apply, as they almost certainly
will, the" duty will be multiplied sov
oral times insread of being reduced.
Soft coal, another largo item,
amounts to $!K)0,000,000, nud the slight
reduction iu tho tariff will have no
oil out 011 the prices except in such
localities ns can bo reached by vessels
from Novu Scotia. The prico of soft
coal has not gouo down since tho tariff
went into ollVct.
Those items amount to four billion
dollars out of tho president's total of
vo billion dollars, nod from none of
them will flic consumer got the slight
est benetit. Other Items too small to
amount to much iu detail consume the
rest of the live billions.
Either the president was ridicuously
fooled by Ahlrjch, or ho sought to bo
tool tlie'people. Ihilnth Herald.
