Mr. Meeks is delivering wood at
different place! in town.
There was some complaint about
cellars during the snow storm lettinii
in too mnoh oold air on the potatoes
and fruit.
There were a good many families in
this vicinity that found their wood
piles entirely too small for comfort
during the cold snap.
During the snow storm one oould
see all kinds of sled. Everyone was
anxious to got a sloighride while the
snow lasted.
Charles Thomas and wife were vis
iting John Burns and wife a few days
ago.
Mr. Fellows' brother was visiting
with him during the snow storm.
Mr. Allen, the butcher, is able to
sit up again, after an illness of some
length.
Dr. Dedman is expected to be home
again in a few days

Wiliiam Knight is going to build a

unable to attend school this week on

It is renorted that two cougars are
in the neighborhood. Large tracks
were seen between Mr. Faubions's
residonoe and Laurel Lodge. How
ever, as yet no one has seen the cou
gars. HARMONY.
A school meeting was hold on the
18th. It was decided by a lurge ma
jority vote to retain the present
school house site instead ot moving it
a half mile further north. County
4 School Superintendent Gary was pres
f out, and spoke on the ditterent plans
proposed for dividing Harmony into
a new district with tho addition of a
part of the Milwankio district.
Considerable alarm was manifested
ly the community when it was dis
covered that a young man was Present
at the above school meeting with a
well developed caso of smallpox, thus
exposing the entire neighborhood, as
nearly every family in Harmony was
represented at the meeting.
Mr. Stevens' family and bIho Mr.
Millards's family have tho smallpox.
Mrs. John and also Mrs. Avery have
been ill with lung trouble, but are
better now.
Mr. Hunter bus bona ill for some
time.

istied with the lot of the farmer and
with a determination to holp make it
a more pleasant and attractive one.
K. K. Sagersor of Kockwood was
looking around this neighborhood this
week for a placo to locate. Wa hope
he will find it.
A basket social and entertainment
will be held at the Firwood hall on
Saturday, Feb. 23.

Miss Emma Bohlander, who was

Mr. Garmire has sold his farm to

A surprise party was given at the
homo of Selino Jones last Wednesday

Onco more wo had a small shower
of snow which bwhiteneil the
ground. Some of it seems loath to
leave us.
His many friends are glad to see

Mrs. Joe Simmons is gaining
strength slowly but surely. We are
all anxious to see her around again,
as we miss her so muoh from onr
gatherings.
Mrs. Jtuswell of Molalla is visiting
her son, J. L. Tubb this week.
(Quarterly meeting will be hold at
the Teazel Creek church next Suuday,
January ill, when Rev. E. B. Jones of
Corvaliis will bo present and preach
at eleven o'clock. In the afternoon a
basket diuuer will be on tho program.

Frank Melton and wife were visit
ing in our neighborhood last week.
They left home one morning to visit
Mr. 'Meltou's'iuusic pupils and during
their absence the water raised so
much that they were unable to gee
back home, so came out to visit with
friends. Mr. and Mrs. Melton live
near Gladstone.
Kev. Uuiun and family visited at
the home of Mr. Cains Herman last
Sunday evening.
, GRESHAM.
G. M. Sunday has sold his farm
near Gresham and will move his fam
ily to Ashland. Mrs. Sonday has ex
perienced ill health during the past
winter, and it is hoped that a dryer
climate will benefit her.
The flooding of Johnson creek was a
source of annoyanoe to the Hamlin
families on the flat. A little more
and the houses would have been
swept away.
The P. R. L. & P. Co. is contem
plating the erection of a hew depot
which will contain larger office,
waiting room and freight space. The
capacity ot the yards will in all prob
ability be enlarged.
During the recent thaw several tons
of dirt slid off the embankment into
the cut west of the depot and covered
the tracks. A gang of men were kept
bnsy for several days clearing away
the dirt and preventing any fresh
sildes.
Mrs. Grace Metzger is to enter the
millinery business.
Saturday's snowfall didn't mater
ialize into anything resembling a
blizzard as was the contention of sev
eral Eastern people.
Mr. Estes, the Estacada banker,' was
a guest of Dr. Alfred Thompson Sun
day. Kev. Dr. Stryken of Portland was
with us Sunday morning.
F. D. Hunt, truffle manager of the
P. R. L. & P. Co., was a Gresham
visitor Saturday.
Miss Pearl Lindsay has received
word from Quincy to the effect that
the smallpox scare in that town has
subsided.Nand she left Sunday to take
up her school again.
Dr. Ott, Mist Ott, Dr. Bittner and
Miss Wilkinson were in the "Ben
Hur" theater party from this place

Carl Mitz has recovered from the
injuries he received from coasting.
"Tuff," the pet of the depot men,
met with an accident Wednesday. A
car struck him, tearing a good portion
of the skin off of a leg. "Dr." Top
elman was called in and performed a
neat bit of surgical work.
The linemen in the employ of the
Portland General Electric Co. have
completed their work on the high
tension line between Gresham and
Bonny.
Miss Mildred Carlson left for Salem
Tuesday, where she will .spend a few
days among her former sohoolmates.
Miss Carlson formerly attended Will
amette University at Salem.
J. H. Grande of the Galli Fruit
Co , of San Francisco, was in town
Friday looking after the interests of

The people of this section have
been visitdd with about eight inches
of snow, imd from all indications we
are liable to have more ot the nioe
stuff.
A man traveling on the road saw

hill plow. A little farther on he saw

and this was found to be a county

Good Annual Report
Tiie fifth annual meeting of the
Farmers Mutual Fire Relief Associa
tion of Portland was held at the- Lo
gus Hall, January 20. On account of
the bad roads the nieeting was not so
woll attended as would otherwise
have been the caso, only seven mem
bers being present from Clackmas
county, but quite a number came from
a considerable distance, from Forest
Grove, Sherwood, Hillsboro, and the
members in Benton county sent one
representative in the person of Adolph
Leder.
The report of the secretary showed
1908 to have been a prosperous year
and the business written has exceeded
the amount during any previous year.
The association has now l,8(ia,2cS5 in
surance in force against f 1,288,069 at
the eud of 1907, being a net gain of
38,614. The net iuooine from all
sources was $5434.13 and the total ex
penditures for losses and expenses
f3584.03. leaving 1850.08 cash on
hand, with no liabilities whatsoever
unpaid.
All the officers and directors were
re-elected.

tacada. Henry Hieple was seen on our
streets Monday.
Irvin .Howk, wife and daughter
passed through town on their way to

day. F. E. Doty reports that he will
start building his new honse the last
ot this week. He is looking forj his
wife from the east in a few days.
MAPLE LANE.
Mr. Bounell returned home Thurs
day after a very enjoyable three
weeks spent with his relatives in
Kansas. He seems to think Oregon is
all right, even if we do have a snow
storm ouce in a while.
Wallace Lewis, who came home to
spend the holidays and finally stayed
here to enjoy the sleigh rides, has at
last returned to his work at the cam .
Mr. aud Mrs. Waldo report the ar
rival of a ten-pound baby girl last
week.
Mr. Siebkin's daughter from Illinois
came to Maple Lane the first of the
weok aud will spend a few weeks
with her father.. Mr. Siebkin's wife
diod about two weeks ago.
The water in Abernethy creek has
been the highest during the past two
weeks that it lias beon iu several
years, and as a consequence the Viola
road is under water. This compels a
heavy travel on the Maple Lane road.
The stockholders of the Maple Lane
telephone line held a meeting Friday
evening which was well attended.
