"If a writer wrote of roaring mus cles, you would laush at him. Joints crack, the stomach thunders, but mus cles, you would say, don't roar. That Is your mistake. They do." The speaker, a physician, put his finger in his ear. "I hear a muscle roaring now," said he. "Try it, and you, too, will hear the sound. And to prove that It is the sound of a muscle, put a plug of wood In your ear instead, and you will hear nothing. "Contracted muscles give out a roar ing sound. Relaxed muscles are si lent. This fact Is of use In dlagnos-' lng certain diseases. The stethoscope makes the museuliw roars audible, and those strange voices proclaim the pres ence of such diseases as tetanus, men ingitis or strychnine poisoning, while silence on the muscles' part Is, so to speak, a sullen admission of the pres ence lnthelr midst of atrophy, degen eration, paralysis." Buffalo Express. , . It Is Well. ' It Is well to carefully cultivate tastes. Euslcln says, "Tell me what you like and I will tell you what you are.? It Is well to study human character. Bodenstedt says: "In the face of ev ery human being his history stands plainly written; his Innermost nature steps forth to the light. Yet they are the fewest who can read and understand." It Is well to "brush up against the world." Goethe says: "Talent forms Itself In secret. Character is the great current, of the world." It Is well to be ' never cast down. Elizabeth Barrett Browning says: ' Let no one till his death Be called unhappy. Measure not the work Until the day's out and the labor done. iof Who the Mound Builders Were. Who ' were the mound builders of North America? The Ilev. Dr. Bryce Winnipeg has examined a large number of these Interesting struc tures and Is of the opinion that tnej; were built by the Toltecs nifd mart the course of the Toltec huuiigrntlor from the south along the Mississippi and Ohio to. the great lakes nnd the St. Lawrence, along the Missouri and nlong the Mississippi proper to the Rainy nnd Red rivers. Not only In the number of institu tions but also In the variety of people Interested and In the Increase ' in workers, can the progress of the anti tuberculosis campaign be measured. Never before in the history of the United States have bo many move ments co-operated and allied to fight tne comiron foe, the white plague. Never in any jingle year have so many different organizations and so many different ranks of people been stirred 10 activity in a movement for the bet terment of the condition of man, as during the year 1908. For instance, during tne past year from one end jf the country to the other,- the labor unions and working men have been .startled to realization of the fact that consumption is a disease which affects tliem, and they have been arming irom east to west for the fight against uiis common foe. Hand in hand, the jiovement of the labor unions has jeen the stimulus given to the clergy man and the churcnes throughout tne country. Never before have so many sermons on tuberculosis been preach- ed from the pulpits of the various churches of the country. The schools too, have been aroused both through jpecial institutions for the treatment jf tuberculosis children and by means il special Instruction to the children in the regular grades in the schools Hundreds of children have been In structed on the dangers of tuberculo sis, state Legislatures, government jtticlals, business concerns, factory owners, social workers, men and wo nen of all sorts of classes have dur ing this past year been aroused to re- Jewed interest in the campaign against consumption. Of the influences which have con tributed to produce this result, prob ably the most weighty, has been the international Congress on Tuberculo sis which was held In Washington dur ing the latter part of September and he first part of October, attracting, as it did, the attention of men aud women in every state in the Union. iepresentatlves were present from al most every section of the country ,and he benefit derived from this insplr- .ng gathering has doubtless given the reatest impetus to activity lu the light against consumption that this lountry has ever experienced. The National Association for the Study and Prevention of Tuberculosis by jieans of its constant propaganda and its two traveling exhibits, has also elped to contribute to the success jf the campaign. ' Particularly Is this 30 in regard to the work being carried in in the South. The Red Ctobs Stamp campaign w'tn its 25,000,000 stamps. has been one of the greatest medi- ims of education on tuberculosis as well as a means of raising money that has ever been Used in this country. The, managers of the campaign against tuberculosis are realizing that hey have a hard fight ahead of them. and that every means that will bring aome to the Ignorant the gospel of health Is being employed. It is safe to predict that with the present rate of increase in activity against tuber culosis maintained, the white plague will be ranked in a class with some of the least dangerous of Infectious diseases within less than fifty years. Quite a number of Highland farm ers attended the meeting of the Beaver Creek Mutual Telephone Association last Monday and came away pretty well disgusted vowing they would never attend another mutual meeting. It goes with an old saying that it is impossible for the farmers to get along in a mutual way. Can it be stubbornness, or Is it Ignorance that blocks the way to success. Eli Fellows returned last week from the hospital at Portland and Is nearly well again. Our section has had 18 Inches of snow fall, with mercury playing about zero, on the mornings of the 11th and 12th. This is inclined to send the mercury back along the cycles of time to the 90's, 80's, 70's and 61 and 02, when our nation was engaged In an unpleasantness that none of us de sire 'to see occur -again. The same may be said by niany.ln regard to such weather In the Willamette Val ley. When the. storm came on peo: pie seemed bewildered and disposed to hole up for the winter, but the low, hue and cry of the likewise as tonished and hungry stock soon put their owners on the move to pass' out the feed that they had in store for just such emergencies. Then all the old sleds were looked over (sorry ooklng things some of them were too) and new ones were improvised jf various designs. By this time the girls became much Interested and expectant, and in a degree sleighriding became an as sured thing, though as it colder grew, he unusual pleasure became old very fast, but so long as It lasts we are determined to wear It out, as it only comes our way about once In ten years. Before I took the Emulsion I had no appetite; was weak; had lost nearly fifty pounds of flesh, and now I eat. well and am gaining every day. I find Scott's Emulsion to be very easily digested and a good food for all weak people."-FLORENCE BLEEKER, No. 1 Myrtle Avenue, Bridgeton, N. J. This is only one of thousands of cases where Scott's Emulsion has given an appetite. It's so easily digested that it doesn't tax the digestive organs and they rest; yet the body is wonderfully nour ished and built up. The digestion is improved then ordinary food is sufficient. Growing boys and girls, who need so much food to keep them well and strong, and also growing, should b given a bottle ofScoTT's Emulsion every few weeks. It does wonders for them. It pre vents their getting run down and spindly.
