Recital Well Received. ,
Charles Riley McCalley, "the man
with two talents," appeared in recital
at Shively's opera Iioubo in this city
Monday night, and those who were
present, can now see ' why he earned
his unique title. The crowd was not
the largest that ever attended an at
traction in this city, but those who
were present express themselves as be
ing highly pleased with the even
ing's entertainment. As a reader of
James Whitcomb Riley's quaint
poems, Mr. McOalloy cannot be ex
celled, and while he uses but few ges
tures, his , voice, in rept ating the
words, is as realistic as possible. Mr.
MoOalley plays the violin in a swett
manner, and held his audience en
raptured whenever he played. His
imitations on the violin were great,
and the instrument was made to sound
like the human voice. Mrs. Leon
Des Larzes sang "Non e Vere" in
tier usual charming mauner, and waB
foroed ,to respond to an encliore.
MiBS Spauldiug. who accompanied
Mr. McCalley, played in a manner far
above "the ordinary, and gave two
piano numbers also that were well re
ceived. The. quartet by Mrs. Des
Larzos, Mrs. Roako, Miss Roake and
Mrs. Green was excellent and received
hearty encore,

High School Defeated.-
Outweighod by at least 20 pounds to
the nian the Barclay High School foot
ball team met its first defeat Saturday
afternoon in Portland, when they
liiud up against the husky aggrega
tion of gridiron warriors representing
the Catholio Young Men's Olnb. At
the end of the game the score stood 41
to 0. The Club team is composed of
former college stars, many of whom
played the game before tlw high
school lads knew , what the word
"football" meant, and they were able
to play rings around the Oregon City
team. However, they "lot them
down easv" and the local boys are
loud in tfieirpraisos of the treatmeut
accorded" tiiem, both on and off the
field. Where it was possible, the
clubmen substituted lighter men, and
eliminated roughness to such an ex
tent that not a man was in any way
injured.
The Barolay team does not in the
least mind this defeat, and the mem
bers are alraady looking forward to
November 28, when they will play the
Forest Grove high sohooL F. J.
Lonergan, the former Norte Dame
star, who for the past three years has
been hnown as one of the hardest line
bucking halves of the Mnltnomah
Club, will take the team in hand, and
round them into shape. That he is
fully capable of doing this is shown
by the winning teams that have rep
resented Columbia University under
his poauhing.

THE CAUSE OF COLDS.
Good Advice Regarding: the
Prevention of Coughs
and Colds.
If people would only properly forti-,
fy and strengthen their system, about
98 per oent of coughs, colds and pneu
monia might be avoided. These trou
bles are simply the -result of weakness,
which produces a catarrhal condition
of the mucous membrane, whioh is an
internal skin of the body. When this
skin is weakened, it becosmes infected
with germs which are carried through
the system by the blood. These para
sites attack and break these delioate
tissues and set up a soreness which
produces what is in reality an exter
nal scrofula.
The only thing that will cure
coughs and colds and prevent pneu
monia is a medication which is ab
sorbed and carried by the blood so
that the diseased membrane is disin
fected, cleaned, soothed and healed.
We have a remedy winch we honest
ly believe infallable and unsurpassable
for the prevention and cure of coughs,
colds and all catarrhal conditions.
It is the prescription of a famous phy
sician, who has an enviable reputa
tion of 30 years of cures gained
through the use of this medioine.
We promise to either effect a cure in
every case or mate no charge for the
medicine. We urge everybody in Or
egon City who has need of suoh a
medicine to try Rexall Muou-Tone.
It stands to (reason that we could
not afford to make such statements
and give onr'own personal guarantee
to this remedy if we were not abso
ltntely positive that we could sub
stantiate our claim in every particular,
and we fee no reason why anyone
should hesitate to accept our offer and
try it. We have two sizes of Rexall
Muou-Tone. Prices 50o and $1.00.
Sometimes a 50c bottle is sufficient
for a cure. Ag a general thing, the
most chronio case is cured with an
average of three large bottles. Re
member, the medioino will cost you
nothing for if you are not satisfied in
every particular. Huntley Bros. Co.,
Main street, Oregon Oity.
Shannon to Close Meetings Sunday.
Evangelist Shannon tried to close
revival meetings at the First Baptist
church last Sunday, but could not on
account of the very great Interest. In
his fourth Sunday afternoon sermon
to men only, last Sunday, there was
a larger attendance than at any other
time and at all the services through
the day about seventy-five people man
ifested the desire to lead the Christian
life. At the morning service the pas
tor gave the right hand of fellowship
to seventy-nine new members. As
this paper goes to press there are re
ported 330 ' conversions and 150 of
these have united with the Baptist
church. - Many of the other churches
in the city are benefited by the re
vival and are taking in new members
from among the converts. Every
church in the city has had its spirit
ual life quickened as a result of the
effort at the BaptiBt church. Large
crowds are found at all of the ser
vices. The meetings will close with
next Sunday's services.
Gladstone Church to Be Completed.

rapidly as possible.
Services will be adjoured to the base
ment next Sunday, as the plasterers'
scaffolds will occupy the auditorium.
