olution. The Oregon Society of the Sons of
the Americau Revolution offers prizes
to the pupils of the public sohools of
the stare of Oregon for essays on sub
jects connected with our war for inde
pendence. Prizes of $30 and $10 will be award
ed for the first and second best essays
written , by high school pupils on
either one of the following subjects:
"Foreigu Aid in the Revolutionary
War." "Washington's Greatness
In what Did It Consist?"
Prizes of $20 aud $10 and three of
R each will be awarded for the first,
second, ihird, fourth and fifth . best
essays, respectively, written by grade
pupils ou any one of the following
subjects: ""The Causes of the Rovo
lutionarly War." "The Battle of
Saratoga." "The'ifavy in the Revo
lutionary War." "The Battle of
Bunker Hill."
The essays are limited to three
thousand. words each, must b writ
ten in thi student's own handwriting
on. one side only ot the paper, and ac
companied by a certificate from the1
writer's teacher, stating that the
writer is a pupil in a designated class,
and that the teacher believes the es
say to be the pupil's own unaided
work. The esay must be signed by
the writer, giving also his or her
postofflce address. They should be

In awarding these prizes the com
mittee will be governed by considera

At a special meeting of the oity
council, held Tuesday afternoon tl e
license of John Uhora, who has con
ducted the William Tell saloon at the
comer of Sixth and Main streets, was
revoked, and the establishment closed.
For some time past there have been
continual distrubances in this resort,
