Republicans have no confidonco in such leadership; will not follow it. Mr. Cake and others, who are plodged to the election of Mr. Uhamljoriain, will not be pormittod to load the republican party further, to its final betrayal and undoing. "There is uo lovity in all this. It is a most sorious mutter. Before these people pledged thomselvea to the election of a democratic senator, un der the leudcrshtp of Bourne, U'Ren nnd Cuke, they wore told plainly what it would mean. "Possibly Oregon may be carried for Taft. It is a possibility only. It can be carried for Taft only by utterly ignoring tiie ladorship and advice of pretended republicans who are plodged to sucu result as the election of a democrat to the samite. "Binoo tho chairman of tho republi can state central committee, and his distinguished brother, who made the futile race for tho senate (it was as if a Imlf-speod lad had contended iu tho Olympian games aro both committed, and all whom they misled committed, to the election of a demonrat to the sonate a position in olitical affairs and national importance scarcely in ferior to that of president aro you to expect any result for the republican party? The only chance is to repudi ate such leadership. Otherwise tho state will go for Bryan, jvith a rush. Now organization of the republican party is indispensable, if hopeful elfoit is to bo made for the presidency in the state. "All this was foreseen. It was all predicted, again and again, as a con sequence of exaltatiou of Statement .No. 1 to the rank of it first and con trolling principlo of party action. j "If Oregon is to be carriod for Taft there must be organization for the effort, beyond tho reach of betrayal by those so-called republicans who Jmvo made thouiselves democrats iu fact." change place, are handling tho busi ness. A member of the firm said that a prominent manufacturer, whoso business would be affected by the out oorae of the eloctiou, had asked him if it would not bo possible to get Lloyd's to cover a risk on the elec tion. The firm cabled and the Lloyd's official replied that they would ac cept a risk at twenty per cent. This oroved to high for the firm's client, and Lloyd's finally came down to ten per cent, with offers to take more business. There was no trouble in getting it. Bortschamaiin & Maloy did $115,000 worth of business in one day, and have applications for 11,000,. OOO.more for which they are awaiting Lloyd's confirmation. It was the opinion on the stock exchango that the Lloyd's people would find them salvcs swamped with aplications from would-be policy holders it they con tinued to offer policies at, the present rate. Farmer Scott, the worker in puts and calls , said that he could go up to Tammany Hall and get enough money at that rate to "bet Lloy's to astundstil'." The prohibitionists, whose national convention oponed Wednesday at Co lumbus, Ohio, entertain no false holies of electing their candidates. They will not oarry a single one of the forty-six states. Yet through do votion to a principlo they maintain their organization, and meot every four years to nominate their ticket and record their protest against the liquor trade. Although the prohibi tionists voted for their own presiden tial electors iu 1!)00 and 1904 in all but six states, in not a single state was their totul vote equal to the plu rality credited to tho prevailing tick et. In 1!)00 Woolloy in forty states roeoivod only 308,914, and in 1904 Swallow only 258,58(1, yet in spite ot this largo gain in votes tho prohibi tionists in 11)04 yielded the third ploce to tho socialists, headed by Debs. In li)C4 they polled 84.770 votes m Illi nois, 28,41)0 in Indiana, 1,1(11 in Iowa, 1,388 in Michigan, 2,787 in New York, 0,38!) in Ohio and 8,377 in Pennsyl vania. Yet if in each case the entire prohibitionist vote had been cast for tho' defeated ticket the result would not have been changed iu a single stato. At the same time, although the prohibitionist movement has mado amazing progress in the south and west in the last tour years it has not bien direotly through the prohibi tion party as a political organization, but through the adoption of prohibi tion or local option by the democrats or republicans. It is the history of minority parties that they commonly exercise a greater influence on the oourso ot events than the recorded number of thoir members would sig TRAVELING THROUGH WALbS "Such activity as has been obsorved does not, however, inrlicato a proba ble return to the eruptions of (ire and lava such as prevailed when these vol canoes were young. Rather, the pres ent phenomena are tho List struggles, the dying gasps, .of the mighty giants." Tho preceding paragraph from tho Oregmiiau's editorial about tho erup tive mountains speaks so well the contending fossils, who still have a ray of hope in battling against the right, the voice of the people. How it does hurt, and in tho few words of the last paragraph. "The last strug gles, the dying gasps, of the mighty giants," That the republican candidate fully ooncurs witli tho Roosevelt policies is evidenced by Roosevelt's approval of Mr. Taft'a acceptance speech. Ana Secretary Root having put his seal of compliance thereto shows that the trusts will be satisfied. There is no iutiuiiition that Taft is inclined to play tho part of "boss," Roosevelt has ho far attended to that, and so far Chairman Hitohcook has not spoken on tho matter of campaign contributions. It is agreed though that Bryan will boss the democratic chairman in this matter. Having been relievod of that little fine of $3!), 000, 000, the Standard Oil Co., nmy be ablo to donate a little to some ooiloge, or perhaps Congressman anerinan win bo asKea to mane some suggestions omoeruiug tho necessity ot eduacating the great American people on the issues of the day. It is oue ot those years that eduoiitioual work lias to be dono with a snap. Onlyafe.vof us are roally good farmers, but nearly all of us think wo know a tiling or two about tho soil that the ltytt don't know. Wo have an idea that this root should go much deeper than our neighbor is planting it and that this or that plant should have more or less of a oortuiu fertil izer or mixtures than Farmer Jones is using, and this all goes to show that a lot of us are wiw in our own eoueoit od minds than tho othir follow, while tho facts point quite frequently to the very opposite. Tho term "fiirm" is used in a general senbo and theories advanced by many people of the times in rereieiu'o to the manner in which one may be conduct ing their business is Hulllmont to cause one to wonder if ho really knows anything at all. Man knows something by instinct. When our savage ancestor felt a pain in his stomach, his simple instinct showed him that if he put things into his mouth and swallowed them the pain in his stomach would leave. Another man discovered that the skins of ani mals were not easily masticated nnd that thereloro they were net very good to eat, but that by cutting holes in the si ins and tying the same around his body it made a first, rate suit ot clot lies, Biu'h as were woru in that age, usiiig a narrow strip for a ginile. ilieru are some who believe niey Know nest about what consti tutes a deception. A man may draft - a uin to provide Unit u any woman, whether maid or widow, shall betray mm matrimony an unsuspecting mine , uy tseeius, Junius, powders or perfumes, cosmetics, artificial tooth, fulso hair, iron stays, corsets, pads or padding, hoops or high heeled shoes, lingerie lace, varieagted stitches or rainbow hosiery or by any other de ceitful means or artificial practices, shall bo convicted ot tho above crime, tho mairiago shall be null and void. But does man kuow it ally Are not somo of us to wisey Jut ask some member of tho opposite sex and it's dollars to buttons a quito reverse opinion would be forthcoming. There are only a few of us that are really good fanners. If any organized nttempt is being made to divide up the large farms of the Willamotto valley a tew words from experienced inou from Now Zealand might be appreciated. They know in that wonderful little country how to do it without fail New South Wales recently took up thoir plan and it h is turned out to be a great success. "Mr. Byran has had bis speeches canned in phonograph cylinders. It might be well to lomember that canned goods sometimes poison the consumer" says tho Oregouian, but neglects to note that it is not the de licious fruit in the can that does the poisoning act, but it is the foroiiru matter, that is continually working to destroy our very best ctlorts. Tho republican loaders aro now ou gnged in fixing thoir sneakers' list n the ones who point to Taft as the man to forry out tho Roosevelt poli cies will bo datad for tho west, while thoso who will point out, that Tuft's election means tho "end ot Roosevelt ism" will be datod in tho east. Will tho Roosevelt admirers who aro supporting Mr. Taft be deceived, or will tho Wall Street supporters of Mr. Taft he deceived'? The answer to this may bo found by carefully study ing ubd finding out how often Wall Street has been deceived in the oandi date it supported. Caerphilly, Wales, July 8, 1908. Editor Courier : I have traveled over consid erable territory near here since my last letter and I wish to inform you of a few facts about this country gen erally. Valrs is very picturesque. It is hilly generally. Some of the counties aro worse than others. The small val leys look beautiful witli their mea dows which are being mowed at the present time. Glamorganshire, our headquarters while here, is a net work of manufactories. Here are great tin factor ties and also great fire brick kilns , tor which they got the raw material, clay, in connection with coal mined here. This is without a doubt the host steam coal in the world and the amount ot coal produced an nually is surprising. I have not the figures at hand, but will get them and inform you lator Railroads ruu in all directions and no line has less than two tracks and most of the coal trafflo lines have four tracks. There are some good and somo bad features in connection with the railroads, whose beds here are usually vory good; but I have traveled over some not equal to yours there! But if we admit that the railroads and bed are smoother, the rolling stock is a great drawbacK. The passenger ooaches are divided into first, second and third classes and their third class here is not to compare witli our third class there. The cars aro not well kept and when you sit upon the dirty cushions tho dust almost smothers you, and the accommodation of the officials is poor. The passenger trains are very numerous, so yon do not wait for trains long, and one thing is fur superior to the states, and that is there are no level railroad crossings at highways or county roads; they would not tolerate suoh a crossing as we have there on Singer Hill. They are built either above or below, and it is a very good plan. Again, its line country roads. The roads are very good all crushed rock and steam rolled. They are good for all vehicles, especially antos. The roads are not as wide thirty feet will cover the widest, and 1 believe that forty foot is fuflly wide enough for our county rondst here, instead of sixty feet. Twenty or thirty feet of good road is-fur superior to fifty or sixty eoc whon not nttouded to or used. I wish to mention the public schools here, although I am not sufficiently acquainted to speak in detail of the school system here, only froui-appour-auce and what information I have gathered from people here since my arrival. The schools are not kept in sanitary condition. The terms con tinue through the snmmer mouths as well as winter. Children are permit ted to attend school when only three years old if the parents so desire, but once they start iu school they are compelled to attend until 14 years of age unless they pass the fifth stan dard, which is a very low standard in my estimation. I am comparing this with our eighth grade at home, which is far superior to the eighth standard here. Cardiff is the largest city in Wales and has a population ot about 220,000. The streets are comparatively narrow, the sidewalks poorly constructed and narrow, the streets are crooked, aud it looks to me that such a thing as platting out city streets is unknown to them here and in every city that I have visited tho streets ruu in any di rection, something in the way we cross lots iu Oregon to get to the old Beavor Creek school houso. I have been surprised, as I expected to see buildings to com pi. re with those in Amerioa, but alasl a four or five-story building is as nour to heaven as they oare to go at present. The people here like to take it easy. They never will die of dyspepsia, for tliey t ike all kinds of time at their meals and eat four times daily; aud to give you an idea of how they feed tourists: My wifo and baby throe years old and mysolf wore at a city by the Boa and I ordered eggs for break fast for three, and sure enough it came at last two eggs for three; so wo divided up. Baby ate one aud my wife one and I looked on, and wo i:re still alive. On everything you see in market places there is a sign like til's: J ' Striotly linglish Uoous , such as tomatoes, strawberries, etc. ; cherries, tco, which we would not thiuk of picking, would consider them not fit to eat at home. English aud Welsh peoplo .Boom to thiuk that ovorythiug produced hore is far superior to the foreign. It is atonishing to see the amount of boor drank here. Most everyone U!0S it, women and men alike, and it makes me fool that I would nover in dulge any more. Cigarettes seem to be the worst curse of all. Mon aud even children tou yours old or loss use the weed in that form. It is a pity to see the ohildreu smoking cigarettes aud also a good many women, and I believe that Old Euglaud has a lot of MISS ANNIE CATRON. f - ly'r '. j L "' & " El MCI. i oao o Office Phone 22 Res. "Catarrh, such as I suffered from, made life a burden to me, my breath was offensive, stomach bad, and my head stopped up so that I was usually troubled with a headache, and although I tried many so-called remedies, noth ing gave me permanent relief.
