NEWS OF THE COUNTY
MULINO.
Several Mulinoites attended the
Sunday school convention at Molalla,
Sunday.
A farewell surprise party was giv
en Mr. and Mrs. Maple at their home
Tuesday evening, when Mrs. Maple's
Sunday school class and a few other
friends went to spend a last evening
with them before going to Hood River.
The evening was spent with games
and music and at a late hour the
lunch the ladies had brought was serv
ed, after which they all went home
wishing them sucess In their new
home. Those present were: Mr. and
Mrs. Lee, Mr. and Mrs. Maple, Mr. and
Mrs. Udell Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Dan
iels, Mrs. Howard, Mrs. Churchill,
Mrs. Snodgrass, Mrs. Daniels; the
Misses Emily Spulak, Katie Daniels,
Nada Lee, Vesta Churchill, Floda
Burns, Alice Moore, Maude Trulling
er, Inez Snodgrass, Gladys Snodgrass,
Mary Snodgrass, Mildred Maple, Calla
Manning, Edith Manning, Maud Man
ning, and Messrs. Bayno Howard,
Claude Howard, Hoyal Trulllnger,
Ernest Mallatt, Arthur Mallatt, Alfred
Killgore, Archie Davis, Rob. Snod

Some dogs made quite a raid on
Dan Greaves' sheep recently.
Arthur Mallatt returned last week
after spending several days In Marion
county.
Edith Wiles, of Portland, was vis
ltlng friends in Mulino, last week.
Nada Lee, Vesta Churchill, Mary
Trulllnger and Edith Wiles, called on
Jessie Akins and Mrs. Jennie Dix,
Thursday afternoon.
The mill Is not being run much late
ly on account of Mr. Marks having
rheumatism in his ankles and Mr.
Meyers being called away.
NEW ERA.
The Pacific Telephone company
was surveying Its old line here last
week with the anticipation of rebuild
ing their line this summer.
The New Era Mutual Telephone
Co. held a call meeting here Saturday
afternoon and signed up a contract
with thes Northwest Long Distance

years, with a 15c rate to Portland and
a 5c rate to Oregon City.
James Smith, the Democratic can'
dldate for commissioner from Macks-
burg, passed through our berg last
Thursday evening.
George Schrlner, of Twilight Hall,
was in town one day last week and
reports that his hand Is fast recover
ing from the loss of a couple of fing
ers which he chopped off some time
ago, while splitting stove wood.
Mrs. H. P. Wink has been having
a siege of grip the past week.
While In Canby last Saturday, Mr.
Bradtl's horse got loose with the bug
gy and made a hurry for homo, but
collided with a telephone pole and
the harness being weak, the buggy
was left, and the horse soon arrived
at the barn.
Charles Hougham Ib also numbered
on the sick list this week.
Mrs. Slaughter loft Sunday for Mo
lalla to be present at her mother's
(Grandma May's) 80th birthday.
Oscar Burgoyne left Tuesday to
take up a run as fireman on the Wood
burn branch. .
J. L. Hoffman and G. H. Brown
were Portland visitors on Tuesday.
"Curt" Diistin is planning a trip to
San Francisco In the near future.

The Ladies InduRtrJnl Club will hold
a social In the S.:w store building
Friday evening, March 27th, the pro
ceeds of which will go toward pur
chasing a good organ for the school.
The L. 1. C. whs organized here
some time ago with the following of
ficers: Mrs. Flora Becknor, presi
dent; Miss Grace Morris, treasurer;
they are doing a good and uoble work
In this vicinity. May they live long
and prosper.
The acre of land for the school was
donated by the two Jennings brothers.

Recently one of our most peaceful
citizens got run in at Canby while
standing on a street corner and talk
ing agriculture. We therefore advise
all our citizens when you have any
business at that place to talk naught
but politics, and only in a whisper.
We notice among the Macksburg
representation in politics, Mr. J. W.
Smith, for County Commissioner on
the Democratic ticket. We take the
liberty to say that Mr. Smith is one
of the most successful farmers of
our burg, and a man who has no foes
to fear, but Bcores of friends to please.
He Is a practical road builder and if
elected Commissioner would be the
right man in the right place.
Ye scribe went to Oregon City last
week to get some dental work done.

Mr. Hathaway, an uncle of Mrs. G.
T. Hunt, who lias been visiting at her
home, returned to Portland one day
last week.

SCHUBEL.
Quite a good crowd came out last
Saturday evening to hear the High
School question debated. C. Schue
bel, of Oregon, suoke in favor of the
school, and the members of the Shu
bel debating society spoke against It,
and I think Mr. Schuebel learned one
thing, and that Is, that our people
here are discussing the issues of the
day, and are keeping themselves post
ed on things political and do not take
every thing for granted because the
lawyers and politicians say it is so.
Mr. Dimick and Mr. Campbell did not
take part in the discussion, but only
stated what they have done and will
do If elected to the office for which
they are striving for. We are ready
for the next crowd which would like
to debate on any live topic.
' Frank Grossmueller Is working for
D. F. Moehnke.
Mrs. John Wolf, who died last
Thursday, was burled Sunday In the
Congregational cemetery.
Joe Stuedoman has pruned the Sta
ben orchard, and It Improved the ap
pearance of it a hundred per cent.
Roar work has been" progressing
very slowly the last few weeks, the
weather not being just right.
Grass and crops are making good
growth, fruit trees are later In bloom
ing than usual.
Mr. and Mrs. G. A. Schubel went to
Portland to. vlsl with their daughters.
The Lutherans are fixing up the
parsonage for the new minister.
Miss Laura Ginther has returned
to Oregon City.
Rov. E. G. Hornshuh came home
Monday to stay a few days.
The Clackamas County Teachers'
Institute that was held In Estacada,
the 28th, was well attended; the teach
ers and others that went from here
reported a fine educational program.
Several homeseekers were looking
through Springwater last week.
The Sunday School had their an
nual election last Sunday, resulting
as follows: Superintendent, W. G.
Lewellen; assistant, William Bard;
secretary, Miss Hazel Tison; treas
urer, Ethel Closner; librarian, Roae
Closner. Good Interest Is taken in
the Sunday school.
Earl Shibley and wife are on the
way home from Arizona, and will
stop a few days at Grants Pass.
The voters of Clackamas county
had better wake up to realize that
they have the privilege to vote on lo
cal option In June, which If they look
at It from a moral, humane, financial
and decent standpoint, Is a great priv
ilege. It was only last week that two
of our bright young men from Oregon,
were dismissed from Stanford Uni
versity In disgrace for drunkenness,
called at the Mt. Home school house
by Statement No. 1 League of High
land, M. E. Kandle, president, and B.
Sullivanfl secretary. A majority of
the voters present were In favor of
Statement No. 1, and a branch league
wa3 roganized with L. C. Unger as
president, A. S. Henderson recording
secretary and C. E. Surfus, corres
ponding secretary. On next Satur
day evening the first two amendments
in the pamphlet containing measures
to be submitted to voters of Oregon,
June 1st, 1908, are to be discussed.
SMYRNA.
The shingle mill here is running
with a full crew on full time, and turn
ing out first-class fir shingles.
Joe Johnston had a public sale on
the 23d, and the next day, he packed
Ills houseuold goods and moved to
Canby.
E. A. Porter has bought a gasoline
engine and feed mill, and expects to
have it in running order soon. Ed.
says that hereafter the manufacturing
shall not all be confined to one street
In this town. He intends to a"dd a
lath and picket machine in the near
future.
A number of the youngbloods and
sports from the neighborhood, attend
ed the horse show at Woodburn on
Saturday, last.
Several of our farmers are hauling
potatoes to the station, but 24c per
bushel is rather poor pay for wear
and tear of horse flesh, vehicles and
patience, to say nothing about the.

this morning, where he expects to

Buena Vista.
Some time ago the city passed an
ordinance to put In a walk from 10th
to Division Street. Something, will
have to be done to force matters it
seems, or we will continue to walk in
mud for another season. Some res
idents have built walks, but others
should soon follow suit.
Miss Marion Gossett and Miss Mary
Heitman are visiting Mrs. VV. G.

Mrs. Oglesby, Mrs. Henry Miller,
Mrs. Carlton and Mrs. Edmonston
were isitlng at W. G. Langsford's a
few days past.
Judge Dimick called on us Thurs
day last.
Mrs. Fred Watson, who has been
under the weather, is getting a great
leal better and able to be around.
Mrs. W. G. Langsford Is also fairly
on the road to recovery, being able
to sit up and walk around a little.
Mr. Ward of Gladstone, has rented
his place to Mr. Huntley, a teamster.
Mr. Ward Is about to install city wa
ter on the premises.
While Mr. and Mrs. Cyrus, of the
Charman House, were retiring for the
night on Saturday last, they were
greatly astonished to hear a loud
knocking at their door." On making

The weather la quite rough at pres
ent ami the farmers are being delajed
in their work. Grain of all kinds look
exceedingly well. Spring grains up
and looking good, but pastures are
quite backward thus far.
Our people are going to have a
steam saw mill. The promoters are
Grant Mumpower and Mr. Lllllo. They
aro blowing out the slumps and ar
ranging for their plant. If not hin
dered, the saws will be buzzing soon.
This place ought to make a city
some day, we havo the cannery and
a good school house, and church, and
puoplo seem to get along well in this
part of Clackamas county.
Your scribe met Poter Wlllson re
cently, who lives In the upper Logan
country. Mr. Wlllson thinks that the
Logan country Is the garden spot of
Clackamus county. We can heartily
agree with Mr. Wlllson for there Is
a good many garden spots In Clack
amas County.
There is quite a lot of land holders
that own such big garden spots In
Clackamas County, that they let tholr
garden spots grow up to hazelbrush
and fir brush and they don't get very
much out of their garden spot.
Tho Logan people are hauling pro
duce by the big loads such as pota
toes, oats, and hay.
Mrs. Spoonor, from near Lents, and
Mr. Tucker, from Hood River came
to seo Mr. livers' fruit ranch near
Stono in Clackamas County. Mr.
Tucker Is considerably taken up with
Clackamas County. Ho bought a ton
acre garden spot at Hood River and
paid $2000. He has been offered all
ready more than he paid.

o'clock in the evening, and the 5th at

new house and barn.
It is reported that the Churchill
boys have rented Mr. Ashby's farming
land.

Mr. Thorp's house burned to the
ground last week and there was not
a soul present. Everything was con
sumed. Burkhardt & Henkle sold their saw
mill to Wm. Lilley of Stone.
C. P. Dlx will commence sawing
lumber In a week or two. He now has
a contract of removing buildings from
the Irvington race tracks at Portland.
Irvin Odell, whose health has been
very poorly for some time, died last
Friday and was burled Sunday.
