BODY FOUND
NEAR AURORA
SUICIDE OF JAMES PHEGLEY IS
CLEARLY ESTABLISHED BY
GREWSOME DISCOVERY.
DESPONDENCY THE CAUSE
Old Man Had Brooded Over Fancied
Injury for a Long While Stabs
Himself In Heart and Cut .
His Throat.
The body of James Phegley, who
disappeared Wednesday, December 18,
was found Thursday morning by J.
W. Cook, of Aurora, In a thicket a
few miles south of Aurora. The un
fortunate man had suicided by stab
bing himself to the heart with a pock
et knife, after making a gash In his
neck and partly severing his jugular
vein. The blade of tho knife was 2
inches in length, and the wounds that
were self-inflicted must have caused
almost Instant death.
The act of Phegley was due to his
despondent condition. For months he
had brooded over a fancied story that
he said was being told about him, and
the Sunday before his death he wrote
a letter to the Russellvllle Nursery,
which had sent him bills amounting
to $75, for collection. Phegley was
employed by the nursery company,
and he wrote a letter to the concern,
advising them that "he had got into
trouble and would have to skip." In
this letter, which was not mailed,, but
was found at the home of his daugh
ter, Mrs. Rydman, at Canby, Phegley
said he was returning the bills and
told his employers they would have
to look to their customers direct for
the money.
Phegley went from Canby the day
before his disappearance to Wilson
ville, St. Paul and Buttevllle, where
he delivered Bome trees that had been
shipped to these points by the nursery
company. He then drove to Cham
poeg, where he remained over night,
and the next morning about 6 o'clock
he started, as he said, to Canby. Lit
tle account was taken of his disappear
ance until a week later, when his son,
Grant Phegley, manager of the Co
lumbia Woolen Mills store in Port
land, went to Woodburn to spend
Christmas with his sister, and for the
first time heard that his father was
missing. The son instituted a search
along the road from Champoeg to Au
rora, but found no trace of his father.
On Tuesday of last week, as Dr. Ded-
man, of Canby, was driving up the
Aurora hill, he saw the horse that be
longed to Phegley and brought the
animal back to Canby. It has since
been ascertained that the horse, after
being released by Phegloy, went to
Needy, where he was formerly owned,
and wandered around the country for
two weeks before starting back to
Canby.
Within one and one-half miles of
Aurora, before the day had hardly
broken, Phegley drove his horse and
buggy Into the brush. He took the
harness off the animal and calmly
turned him loose. After pinning a
note to the buggy, with the words,
This buggy and harness belongs at
Canby. James Phegley," the dement
ed man took his pocket knife, that
has been identified as his own, drew
the weapon across his throat and then
plunged the blade into his heart.
The body was found about 300 yards
from the buggy. Phegley had laid
down under the stump of an uprooted
tree, where Is body was sheltered and
only one arm was outstretched and ex
posed to the rains. The remains were
In a fair state of preservation.
The funeral was held at Canby, Sat
urday afternoon, tinder the auspices
of Meade Post, No. 2, Grand Army of
the Republic, of Oregon City, of which
deceased was a member.
Lame Shoulder Cured.
Lame shoulder Is usually caused by
rheumatism of the muscles and
quickly yields to a few applications of
Chamberlain's Pain Balm. Mrs. P.
M. McElwee, of Boistown, New Bruns
wick, writes: "Having been troubled
for some time with a puln In my Wt
shoulder, I decided to give Chamber
lain's Pain Balm a trial, with the re
sult that I got prompt relief." For

The close of the year shows a sat
isfactory condition of affairs in the
office of County Clerk Greenman and
County Recorder Ramsby, where the
heaviest fees of Clackamas County
are received. Mr. Greenman's fees
for the year 1907 were $4938.85. All
day yesterday the office force hoped
l,n vain that some attorney would step
before tho counter and pay the $1.85
necessary to swell the amount to
$5,000. Because of that fact that dur
ing the month of November the bank
holidays were proclaimed, no legal
business was transacted, and as a
consequence the fees for that month
fell off. The abolishment of the Dis
trict Attorney fee of $10 in divorce
cases has also had something to do
with the receipts of the office. For
the year 334 marriage licenses were
Issued, and during the same period
the number of suits for divorce filed
was 234, giving the marriages just
100 the best of It. The number of
hunting licenses was 798, but the
money received from this source goes
to the State.
County Recorder Ramsby points
with elation at the record of his of
fice for the year. His receipts were
$5338.85, which is greater than any
previous year. The number of instru
ments filed was 4800, with the excep
tion of marginal cancellations. Twenty-five
hundred deeds were recorded,
and the number of mortgages, satis
factions and assignments was 1230.
The Recorder's office made 243 cer
tified copies and recorded 256 chattel
mortgages. The balance of the num
ber is miscellaneous transfers.
In the offices of Sheriff Beatle and
Assessor Nelson there Is also satis
faction over the year's record. Mr.
Nelson has raised the assessed valua
tion of tho property of the county, ap
portioning tho Increase to corpora
tions and timber holdings, and Sher
iff Beatle has made a record In the
collection of taxes.
The Pure Food Law.
Secretary Wilson says, "One of the
objects of the law Is to inform the
consumer of the presence of certain
harmful drugs In medicines." The
law requires that the amount of chlor
oform, opium, morphine, and other
habit-forming drugs be stated on the
label of each bottle. The manufac
turers of Chamberlain's Cough Reme
dy have always claimed that1 their
remedy did not contain any of these
drugs, and the truth of this claim is
now fully proven ,as no mention of
them Is made on the label. This rem
edy Is not only one of the safest, but
one of the best In use for coughs and
colds. Its value has been proven be
yond question during the many years
it has been In general use. For sale
