Morris, barkeeper of the ralace sa loon, prevented the self-destruction of a young man named Joseph Richard son, who resides on the hill, at an early hour Monday evening. Richard son had been playing cards and drink ing In the Baloon during the day, but was not excessively intoxicated. At about 7 o'clock ho went out and se cured a package of strychnine, re turning to the saloon and BHklng for a glass of beer, which was served to him. Morris went about his work and happened to turn about Just In time to see Richardson In the act of emptying the package of Btrychnlne in the beer. Morris swiftly grabbed the glass with one hand and the pack age with the other hand and communi cated with Night Officer Henry Cooke, who took Richardson In chargo. Tho lad, when questioned, murmured somthlng about a girl being the causo of hi stroubles. Ills brother, Edward Richardson, appeared on the scene and took the would-be suicide to his home. The Richardson boys came here re cently and Joseph had been working In the mills of the Willamette Pulp & Paper Company up to last week. He tried to borrow a revolver from Mor ris earlier In the day but did not get the weapon and so endeavored to ro ' sort to a more painful method. Grlder Dies. E. T. Orlder died Wednesday night of pneumonia after a brief Illness at his home at Willamette. Mr. drlder was about C5 years of age, and was a member of the Meade Post G. A. K., being a veteran of the Civil War. He served in Company A, 27th Indiana Infantry, anil was one of Clackamas County's most public spirited cltiens. Mr. Grlder leaves four children to mourn his loss. They are Wayne, of Condon, Oregon; Charles, of Port land; Mrs. Alice Lennon, of this city, and Beatrice Daly of Portland. County Judge Dlmlck has appointed Anthony Moore guardian for the es tate of Jay Milton Moore, a minor, ap plication for guardian having been made some time ago. The estate consists of 459 acres of land in Clack amas county valued at about $8000. Alfred Sprague. Alfred Sprague, aged 85 years, died Monday morning nt bis home In Red land, and the funeral took place on Tuesday afternoon from the family residence. Tho interment was in Sprague cemetery. Deceased was born November 7. 1822, and was an Oregon pioneer of 1852. He bad re sided in Clackamas County ever since coming to tho state. Ho is survived by nine children, all residents of Or egon. .
