BARKEEPER
SAVES LIFE
Suicide of Joseph Richardson
Prevented by Action of
D. R. Morris.
Only the prompt action of A. J.
Morris, barkeeper of the ralace sa
loon, prevented the self-destruction of
a young man named Joseph Richard
son, who resides on the hill, at an
early hour Monday evening. Richard
son had been playing cards and drink
ing In the Baloon during the day, but
was not excessively intoxicated. At
about 7 o'clock ho went out and se
cured a package of strychnine, re
turning to the saloon and BHklng for a
glass of beer, which was served to
him. Morris went about his work
and happened to turn about Just In
time to see Richardson In the act of
emptying the package of Btrychnlne
in the beer. Morris swiftly grabbed
the glass with one hand and the pack
age with the other hand and communi
cated with Night Officer Henry Cooke,
who took Richardson In chargo. Tho
lad, when questioned, murmured
somthlng about a girl being the causo
of hi stroubles. Ills brother, Edward
Richardson, appeared on the scene
and took the would-be suicide to his
home.
The Richardson boys came here re
cently and Joseph had been working
In the mills of the Willamette Pulp &
Paper Company up to last week. He
tried to borrow a revolver from Mor
ris earlier In the day but did not get
the weapon and so endeavored to ro
' sort to a more painful method. Rich
ardson Is about 21 years of age and
his former homo was In Southern California.

and he was followed by Martin Em-
strum. Ring has been conducting me
place for the last six months.

Articles of incorporation of the Meth
odist Episcopal Church of Molalla
have been filed by the Hoard of Trus
tees: William P. Herman, president;
0. W. Robbins, secretary; William
Mnckrell, Peter Fanrle. The church
property is valued at $2000.
The Scandinavian Cemetery Asso
ciation of Sandy has presented arti
cles of Incorporation,' with a property
value of $200. Tho trustees are Ole
Mikkelson, president; Mr. Nelson, sec
retary; Lewis Ilauglum, treasurer.
Tho Estacada Methodist Episcopal
Church is preparing to file articles
of Incorporation, and tho members of
the Hoard of Trustees are: J. W.
Reed, president; E. S. Womer, secre
tary; William Dale, Rosa A. Regan,
E. V. Surface.

Miss Mary Roake from the Portland
Sanitarium was spending the day with
her father, Sam Roake, Monday.
The marriage of Miss Mary Ellen
Costella to Clarence Wells was sol
emnized Monday In the office of the
County Judge, Dlmlck.
Mr. and Mrs. Fred C. GailKe and
son, Joe, Will Schleffer and Joseph
Schleffer spent Sunday at Cleono, cel
ebrating the birthday of Ernest
Schleffer, Mrs. Gadke's uncle.
Miss Viva Tull, who has been visit
ing at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Cass
U. Barlow In Oakland, Cal., tor me
last few months, returned home on
Monday. She will reside In Portland
with Miss Mary S. Barlow.
The fortnightly meeting of the Dick
ens Club was held Monday at the
home of Mrs. William S. U'Ren and
the reading of "Oliver Twist" was
continued. Dainty refreshments were
served. The next meeting will be
held March 25 at the home of Mrs.
Theo. Clark.
Tualatin Tent, Knights of the Mac
cabees, and Tualatin Hive, Ladies or
the Maccabees, Monday night held an
Informal session and nut and fruit
social In Woodmen hall. Slate Com
mander J. W. Sherwood, of Portland,
made a brief address. The evening
was spent in card playing and Proles-
sor Betzel rendered several pleasing
selections on the piano.
Forty members of Oregon City As-
amli v United Artisans, went to imu
waulde Monday night and were joined
by delegations from Portland and Sell-
wood. Dr. Manlon, assistant supreme
medical director, made a short talk
on the benefits of the order, and an

E. T. Grlder Dies.
E. T. Orlder died Wednesday night
of pneumonia after a brief Illness at
his home at Willamette. Mr. drlder
was about C5 years of age, and was a
member of the Meade Post G. A. K.,
being a veteran of the Civil War. He
served in Company A, 27th Indiana
Infantry, anil was one of Clackamas
County's most public spirited cltiens.
Mr. Grlder leaves four children to
mourn his loss. They are Wayne, of
Condon, Oregon; Charles, of Port
land; Mrs. Alice Lennon, of this city,
and Beatrice Daly of Portland.

Buys Fine Horses.
E. R. Willams, of the Williams
Bros. Transfer Co. has returned from
a trip up the river buying horses. He
brought back three span, ol Percne
ron stock, and the bunch will repre
sent some $1700 In money. They are
some of the finest horses that have
been seen in town for a long time.
Guardian Appointed.
County Judge Dlmlck has appointed
Anthony Moore guardian for the es
tate of Jay Milton Moore, a minor, ap
plication for guardian having been
made some time ago. The estate
consists of 459 acres of land in Clack
amas county valued at about $8000.
Alfred Sprague.
Alfred Sprague, aged 85 years, died
Monday morning nt bis home In Red
land, and the funeral took place on
Tuesday afternoon from the family
residence. Tho interment was in
Sprague cemetery. Deceased was
born November 7. 1822, and was an
Oregon pioneer of 1852. He bad re
sided in Clackamas County ever since
coming to tho state. Ho is survived
by nine children, all residents of Or
egon. .

Cray were married Tuesday afternoon
at the home of W. W. H. Samson, kov.
Spels, of Marquam officiating. The
bride and groom are well known peo
ple of Marquam and at an early hour
Tuesday morning stole a march on
their friends and relatives and came
to this city where the clergyman met
them by arrangement.
