The cold snap of the past two weeks was the coldest experienced for many years and the warm Chinook wind is welcome to thaw out the frost. A valuable horse belonging to M. Keisecker while prancing in the yard slipped on the ice and broke its leg. A wagon with a load of feed and the U. S. Mail with J. Vanderhoff, slip ped on the ice on Menig's hill and went over the bluff. No one was hurt. The wagon was splintered to pieces and the horses somewhat bruised. bandy school house was almost burned to ashes by a little boy who in sweeping out the school house put tho kindling on the stove and forgot to take it off, then going home. The kindling wood caught fireignited the floor and soon a big blaze was the re sult. M. McCormack and E. Coalman happened to pass by, broke in and ex tinguished the Are only after a heroic fight. ( Sandy is once 'more in great excite ment over another railroad that is threatening to invade this locality. A surveying crew of 14 men are locating a line through Sandy to Mt. Bruns have formed a real estate company to handle all kinds of property. ' John McDonald has E. F. Bruns, the architect, making plans for a hand some residence on his big farm. Sandy debating society has one of the lively discussion of the season on the question, "Resolved that the Japs should be excluded from the United States public schools." It was led on the affirmative by E. F. Bruns, and negative by Jas. Bell, the judges de ciding, in favor of the affirmative. Chas. Bornstedt is visiting his re latives. G. Bosey of Damascus, is-at Sandy, visiting relatives. H. Hemer, met with another acci dent while barking a log near another man, whose axe slipped out of his hand cutting an awful gash in his face. . The little child of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Bosholm, died and was buried Sunday in Bruns Hill cemetery. NEW ROAJ TO OGLE MINES. Petition to be Presented Asking For Survey of the Road. At the meeting held Tuesday night of the special committee appointed by the Board of Trade to look Into the advisability of building a new wagon road from the end of the present Knowles road to the Ogle mines It was decided to make a favorable re port on the project. tl would only be necessary to build for a distance of about seven miles, the approximate cost of which would be about $000. Joseph Harless, It is understood, in an endeavor to get some assistance from the county to further along the project will file a petition signed by property owners of that district ask ing that a survey be made of the road from the end of the present Knowles road to Copper creek, a distance of about 17 miles, a large part of which at the present time is built. BUENA VISTA. Mr. and Mrs, Charles McCummlngs and Mr. Kerns, the drayman for Hen ry Miller, were visitors here on Tues day. While here they had an oppor tunity of witnessing the disgraceful state of our Btreets and roads. They came out with a team to get a load of fence posts to take to town. Before leaving for home they did a great deal of work for the city. By digging the grade down and filling In the rut holes so that the team could pull the load up the grade a distance of 30 or 40 feet. They should put in a claim to the city to have the work go on their taxes. Mrs. Lingren was visiting Mrs. Mc- Collum last Wednesday. Mr. Langsford will look after, the Miller property during their absence. Next time Messrs. Cummings and Kerns bring a team here they bettor hire the mayo?- or some of the city councilmen to help worl: on the roads. Harrison Davis, son of Mrs. L. B. McCollum, nee Davis, went to Port land early Sunday evening for medical treatment, since which, time no one has heard from him, his mother is very anxious to hear from him. Deputy Game Warden John Green who was recently appointed to that office, Wednesday filed a complaint against S. White for having slain a female deer out of season and also against Walter St. Johns, Ora Hick man and Redman RussuJ. The last three 'mentioned are accused of hav ing killed two buck deer and three fe males. Warrants for their arrest have been placed in the hands of Constable Charles Ely. Lewis has arranged a series of farmers' In stitutes to be held In Clackamas county February 11 to February 16, inclusive. Institutes will be held at 3even places with afternoon and even ing meetings at each place. The afternoons will be devoted to discus sion and the evenings to lectures, il lustrated with stereoptican views. Dr. James Withycombe, of the Oregon Agricultural College; Mr. Judd, win will talk on "draft horses"; William Sulmerlch, whose subject will be 'dairying;" Fruit Commissioner Jas. H. Reid of the first district and county Fruit Inspector A. J. Lewis, will be the speakers at these Institutes, which will be held on the following dates: Estacada, Monday, February n; Damascus, Tuesday, February 12; Logan, Wednesday, February 13; Mo lalla, Thursday, February 14; Canby, Friday, February 15; Oregon City, Saturday, February 1G. Inspector Lewis returned Monday from a ten days' stay at Corvallis, where with other county fruit inspec tors and, Commissioners Reid and Parks, he took a special course in horticultural work from Prof. Cordley and was shown how to detect and treat diseases of fruit trees. Mr. Howard, our mill man, Is mak ing hard wheat flour again. Rumor has It that there will be a .ailroad through tins section soon and that they are all ready at work on a townsite at Viola. Now that the cold wave is gone, we that have not finished our potato dig ging, can now proceed. Our school Is closed this week for fear the sore throat disease is diphtheria. John Wallace lost his blacksmith shop and cellar with his winter's sup ply of potatoes and fruit through fire last Friday night at 12 o'clock.. Mr. Wallace had a fire in the shop during the day which is supposed to be the cause of the conflagration. The young people met at John Haines' last Friday evening and had a play party. They all report a good time. Fred Hettman is improving from his recent illness. oN other sickness is recent illness.
