5 OREGON CITY COURIER, FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 16, 1906. Se. ENIGMA Address of Claude S. Howard, Delivered at a Meeting of Clackamas County Socialists. Formally thousands of years man lms ever echoed the saying' of tlio old time prophet, man is born, to trouble as the sparks fly u inward, and tho dark mystery why man Jins sorrow, Buffer ing, war snd strifo in greater degree than all tlierost of the animal creat ion, lms evor proved unsolved. But at last thoro fitaudB before you a humble dociplo of. 0110 who made this question a lifo lonf study mid in con junction willi other meii of science discovered the underlying Lives which govern the development of society. Two of tlio nnmos are world wide and each put forth a law "Flint Jms stood the test of the most ridgod investiga tion.' The first ;by Clmrlos Darwin, sometimes known as the law of tlio survival of the fittest, but statod in its original form, as this : Those forms nf life wliich cannot adapt themselvos to existing conditions MUST PERISH. O" he second by Curl Jlafx, which roads: Tho economic condition of a peojple at any, given time doaiiiiatcs all other conditioiiF. But in discussing these things in this brief space of time, I can do no more than olimb to an elevation and point to the largest monu tains which have come to our viow, leaving the rox- imirnuuu pi me vaiioys to some future time. Sometime in the" distant past man was wandering in savagry, fight ing for his existence with each . rude weapons as clubs and stones and carrying on a relentless warfare against the animals woaker than him self for his food and being in turn preyed upon by the' animals etroueor than himself for their food supply. Undor these conditions tho men that exercized the most brain capacity tsoapod mid propagated their kind, who were subjected tn the same ordeal. Some time rl auruggio it was discovered that tv meu ngiitmg together could defeat five or six fighting indopondeutly, an tne principle of colloctivo action w; born. The first recorded uivision of Btock resnltod in Jacob gutting nearly all of it by a shrewd triub. From that time for ward each upward step of socioty has been brought Mho it by tho application of a more advanced form of co-operation adopted by some one of the con tending classos in the straggle for an advantage and not with the intention of bouefiting all of the people at all. During tha dark ages the ruling, class was tho fuodal lords who had tho habit of robbing the merohants and manufacturers (who were tho begin ning or our present capitalints) to carry on thoir' various wars. The result of this, was the capitalists rose lii.reueUion and with the assistance of tho working class destroyed fnedal- ism, established republics or limited monarchic.- To accomplish this they were chnipellel to give the common peoplu the ballot. Thus, a great for ward step was taken, to be quickly followed by tne establishing of public schools so tho capitalists could have skilled workingmon to run thoir fast deeloping machiuery It will be con siderable of a jolt to find that the mheilion whioh created the United States was not for the people and that thoConstitution was simply a class doo ument as stated by a delegate, who wa afterwards President Madison, to pro tect the minority (Capitalists) against, the majority (the working class) also against the extortions of King Goorgo. It is thus shown that the government of the United States is not and never has boon for the people and by the people and the Declaration of Independence was the enrtain that was let down whiha the scenes were being shifted behind. That republics are especially adapt ed to the growth of gigantia fortunes, has boon shown in the United States more than any where else. But the dominant principle of Capitalism, Which is the taking of a profit on all commodities is destined to bring about the downfall of tne sy. tom asei:ohnew advance in industrial dovolopment has leen forced by certain causes in the prooiODS one. In the light of these Economic-researohos it has been shown int competition is not the lifo of trade, hut, the death of trade and in every industry that has been formed nto a trust, competition is dead. In iort tho trust is socialistic, a new and adavneed form of co-0-eratiou if you pleasa. We, the Socialists, can sit back and enjoy the efforts of some to.ourb, oontrol, or perhaps prevent 0 formation cf new trusts. Their offorts are foredoomed to failure. Why my friends do yon kuwo that you e trying to hinder your best friends? Tho trusts aro here in obedience of 10 law of the survival of the fittest ud Roosevelt, Bryan or Hearst can n more prevent their erowth than oy ban prevent tho slow moving of 0 glacier down the mountain fide. IJaviug now outlined the development ofociety to the present time and un derstanding tho laws which guide its development wo may safoly predict for the future. Here is whore Carl Marx shows his creat foresight and his principal worka which were written in 1840 and a few years later predictod tho formation of tho trusts mid tlio extension of Capitalism to all countries in the world. With groat rapidity Japan aud China are institut ing modern labor saving niaohiuery and will soon be able to supply the world with goods made with labor at 10 to 25 oents'iihiy. Not ouy that, but Japan is going mto this project on a national scale that forming sure or govornuionc ownership, or state Socialism. Undorstnud that this is not genuine Soo alisin, for the mincers 01 nub will no ror tlie upper plans and not for nil tho people. But, what will be tho offoct of this on Amerioa. If you understand our present conditions at all, yon will know that a profit taking system can only go an as long as the capitalists bavo a foreign mn-ket to sell tho surplus goods which tho working class make, but aro too Door to brv. Wo, tho American working class, will have to come to Ohineso standard of labor or face starvation. This is an absolute fact which 110 one can deny. What will ho the result? Ah, here is where tho Socialist can smilo, he toes the result ntd knows that we can have only one solution, we must take all the great pnhlio utilities and make them public and collective properly ; wo must sell all goods at la'ior cost 'and then the pooplu will bo able to buy thorn h ick aud we will not need a nnirnet 111 other lands. This, my mends, is Socialism aud you now liud it very different from what you had thought. At least this jipplio.i to tome who have been look- "g at this from thd Utopian side. You had thought that It was mum.' hing in the nature of mi experiment which you could accent or riwf, t seemed best. But I am hero today o present Socialism as tho noxt up ward step, in the progress of the world as something which is absolutely necessary for the preservation nt ultivntion and which man will be forced to receive as helms in tin lunt oon forced to take upward s'ens liv ua stress ot circumstances. ORE j ON CITY, Nov. 13.-(Editor of the Courier. ) I would like some of the wise folk to tell me through the Courier if Mr. Ruzvolt hns violat ed the civil service law by Bending his cabinet out to canvass for the Republicans in the various State elections just passed. Of course i Teddy stands for law and order and a square deal, to hear him tell it, but wnac are rne tacts. Does any one believe that Gov. Gooding and Judge Smith stood for law and order when they kidnapped a lot of. innocent men from Colorado and then deny them the right of habaet corpus? Another caso of a square deal. When a wreck oooured on the rail road in Eastern Washington, two mail clerks who escaped injury reported the cause of wreck, laying the blame where it belonged to the company. They wore fined 30 each and suspend ed 10 days by the postal authorities. This caused an order being issued that hereafter mail clerks having any grievance must report the same to their superiors and not give any fl:ntemonts out that the pnblio may get hold of. Here is another square deal but I pity the soldier if Teddy gots a hold of it : CUBA AND "JUNGLE BEEF." THE G FLANGE Conducted by J. W. DARROW, Chatham, N. Haa It Any Claim That Mill Jimtify .Urn EKtublUliincntt t Sometimes those who are not mem bers of the grange ask the question if it Is 'right for the grange to start a store and thus enter Into competition with stores already established, and, it may be, In smaller towns to crowd out the country store. The question Is very well answered In the New York Farm er, which proceeds to discuss It some what nt length: "If the farmers can, by purchasing for themselves what they have pur chased for. years through the store and by selling for themselves what the store has for years sold for them, get their purchased supplies at lower prices and sell their own products for better prices there Is no reason why they should not go into co-operative buying and selling. In cases whore granges have bought and sold, the results have been satisfactory, and nobody has been deprived of any essential moral or le- CURED TO STAY CU RED. gal right. "The grange store Is a great thing for the farming community, and farm ers should make free use of it. It can be used to cut down costs In buying supplies and to Increase profits In sell ing farm products. Besides this, the management of the store by farmers will In a measure give the farmers just the business ideas and experience need ed to enable them to play the part in larger co-operative operations so nec essary to give them a more equitable part of the money paid by consumers for the produce of the farms. Mlddle manlsrn Is what stands today between the farmers and prosperity. The con sumers pay perhaps $12,000,000,000 a year for produce that gives the farmers less than $1,000,000,000 a year. The great difference between these great sums .Treasures the great middleman draft and graft oil the agricultural In terest of the United States. Wherever and whenever tho farmers can do so they should reduce the draft and graft. They can do It by starting grange stores, co-operative cheese, butter and casein factories, co-operative milk con denserles, collecting aud distributing agencies for eggs, fruit, butter, cheese, wool, meats and other produce, co-operative elevators and fUur mills and other establishments now controlled, exclusively by middlemen who pay to producers and take from consumers just what they will." It Is a hopeful sign that the grange as an organization is giving so much thought and study to the prob lem of eduentlon, and the closer the grange and the school can be brought together the better for both. There are some tilings to teach In the schools be side multiplication tables and declen sions. The" American school should stand, and I believe does stand, for character as well as scholarship. The ord'nary people make the state, and the schoolteacher Bhould help to mold the character of the ordinary people. Above all else let us take more inter est in the schools where our children ar trained. Let un cultivate the ac quaintance of the teachers. Let us see to It that only teachers of ability and strong character are employed, for It mnst be the right character In the teacher that inspires the right charac ter in the pupil. G. A. Fuller.
