' OREGON CITY COURIER FRIDAY, OCTOBER 19 1906 3 UNKNOWN MAN FAME OF HOOD RIVER APPLES mp's for photos NINE YEARS AGO SHOOTS DAVIS WE TOLD YOU THAT THE ; " Captain J. P. Shaw Talks on Fruit Growing. LESSONS BROUGHT TO US One Thousand Boxes of Fine Apples On Exhibit Was a Pleasing Sight and a Revelation. of The Irrigation Congress, ot w'ucli the writer, among others, was- au accredited delegate, closed its session? at Hood River on Friday last. - While the attendance wub not large, the en tliuiasisra and interest manifested by those present, made up for the paucity of numbers. It was voted to hold the next session at Grants Pass. The congress was held during the seventh bi-enniul Fruit Fair of the famous Hood River Valley, and of this, I particularly wish to snak. The attendance from Clackamas County was fair, and yet as an object lesfon ror it certainly is an object lesson to visit those frnit fairs the attendance ought to have been greater, I have attended a number of these fairs, and at no time have I been impressed with the possibilities apple culture in Clackamas County an was Drought to mind at this exlubi As it is preity well known, the fame fl the Hood River apple is world wide, and justly sd, therefore, it was expected that the attendance would be large, and from all parts of the country. Buyers a plenty were there to snap up the oxhibita, whioh sold at considerably more than $3 a box, The red ou the Hood River appples is a deeper red, and the yellow on Newtou is a richer golden color than is found elsewhere. Rub your hand over a Hood River apple and you get a varnisu-liKe appearance to the ski that is marvelous. Nowhere else has the apple rptiched such perfection i in the Hood River Valley Tha climate in this little gem of paradise is nil that might be desired The air comes from the mountain laden with sweet smelling fragrance ot nr and pine, giving health to the inhabitants as it spreads out over the little valley below. The precipitation, much of which i in the form of snow, is somewhat less than that of Clackamas, the average being 43 inches. This, however, being augmented by irrigation which is carried ou by the growers through out the valley. Public ownership be ing the rule, and has solved the water problem to the entire satisfaction of everybody interested. The exhibits of apples were superlative grand; more than one thousand boxes, artisti cany arranged in a canvass pavilion 150 feet long by 50 wide, was a sight worth while to go to see, and while have not talked to any of my fellow delegates, I venture to say tnal tne display was a pleasing sight, if not a revelation to them. Our genial neigimor irom jKuwaukie. Mr. Richard Soott, was there, and to show his loyalty to old Clackamas, brought mi CAiuuiu wim niui. Yes, "Dick" was there all right ana naa a nne display of pears and apples just to show what Clackamas could do, . when once she takes up irnit culture as a business. ' Dick s exhibits occupied a prominent place amDng Hood Kiver s famous red cheeked beauties that weie only rivaled by tne bloom on the cheeks ot the equally famous Hood R'ver girls, and this is saying a great deal, for Olaokamas can boast, of a goodly number of maidens with the peach blow blush on their cheeks. Onr tellow townsman. Judge Ryan, was there viewing the "Big Red Apples," and occasionally casting turtive glances on (he fair maidens as they paraded through the pavilion. Owing to a previous engagement, the Judge remained but one day, much to his regret, as he was denied a 15 mile drive through the vallpy to see the orchards, which ars just now laden with fruits, and joy to behold. If the Courier will grant the necessary spaae for a more extended article ou the Hood River Apple; the reasons why it has reached its present state of perfection, and what oan be done along these lines in Clackamas County, I will avail myself of -the opportunity to point out a few facts, and offer some suggestions to the farmers and others why the growing of fruits t,nd especially apples should be taken up as a bn-iness in Clack amas Cououty. JAS. P. SHAW. Reported Hold-up on Highway Near Eagle Creek. KNIGHT OF ROAD ESCAPES Sheriff Beatie Investigates But Finds No Clue to Identity of Hold Up Artist. J. F. Davis, of Lents, was shot Sun day miming about 9 'olonk by an uuiiuuwii muii. Him win prouauiy re cover. The ball from a 23 calibre rifle entered his body about two inches below the right nipple. jnows was received ol the occurrence at 11 o clook Sunday morning by Chief of Police Burns, who turned the matter over to Sheriff Beatie, and that officer immediately boarded a oar for Eagle Creek and Estaoada, from whence the information came by telephone. Mr. Beatie found that Davis ,who has been working in Lindermanu's sawmill as a carpenter, had started Sunday morning to Eagle Oreek station with the intention of buying a ronud trip ticket from Eagle Oreek to Lenta in order to spend Sunday at his home. Davis, who was carrying a valise in one hand, says that he was going along the road in the out this side of the creek, when he was aooostea oy a man, carrying 22-calibre rifle, who ordered Davis to throw up his hands Davis threw up the free hand, but this apparently did not satisfy the hold-np artist and he raised his rifle and shot, and then at once turned and run. Nothing has been heard of the knight of the road. Davis was taken to his home at Lents, and the sheriff was not able to see him, but he spent cue atteruoou in the vicinity of the plane where the crime was committed He was'not able, however, to obtain a description of the assailant. Davis, himself, is not able to tell how the outlaw was dressed, nor can he describe his appearance. Unless some clue is seoured to work on, it is proh able that the daylight criminal will not be apprehended, as everything seems to tavor ins escape.
