CLACKAMAS COUNTY GR0W1N0.
Though hardly noticeable from day
to day, Clackamas County is making
great progress in the development of
her resources. Only a few months ago
the Oregon Water PowVr & Electric
Railway Co. tappod the north-eastern
portion of the County, land doubled
and trebled in value, the farmers be
gan for the first time to enjoy a
profiit from their farms and ap
parently in a single night their, con
dition changed from isolation and in
convenience to close and convenient
communication with the metropolis of
the State. During this month men
will be actively engaged in the con
struction of a railroad bridge at Wil
sonville and within a very short time
the territory West "f the Willamette
will be brought by eloctrio transpor
tatlon in close touch with Portland
In other portions of the County rail
road sohomos are being considered and
protty soon another of thee rumored
railways will ripen into reality.
Farms- are being divided and im
proved. Every highway is dotted
with new houses. Unly whon we stop
to consider do we realize how rapidly
is the prooess of development going
on.
This is the time for every young
man to get possession of a little real
estate. It will be but a few years
longer that good land can be had for
f 15 per acre. Inconvenience of trans
portation facilities makes the cheap
land, the soil is equal to that which
brings 9100 per aore and transportation
facilities will come, within a short
time, to the land.
- Claokamas County is as large as
Belgium, her soil is, on an average as
rioh and her olimate is immesurably
superior; yet Belgium supports
population of seven millions of people,
more than ten times the popnlation of
the state of Oregon. But this County
is just beginning to settle up. The
next twelve or fifteen years will

A good average of productiveness is
what counts in a farming community,
fairly good returns eeoh year and no
failures. This locality enjoys a pepd
average. Other parts of the Coantrv
have their bumper crops and their
total failures. Clackamas County may
compare unfavorably with suoh
localities in an occasional yeai bet she
is far ahead iu the general average
oovering a number of seasons.
This year Eastern Oregon has less
than half a crop. Last year was no
hotter. Tho two years In Clackamas
County would make an avorage of an
ezoollent crop.
The same comparison will apply to
Eastern States. Their productiveness

far below that of Western Oregon.
Let us not loose sight of the fact tint .

Col. Arthur L. Hamilton, of the Seventh Ohio Volunteers, writes from

"Besides having the merlta ot Peruna fully demonstrated In my fam

fully recommend It. "
In a later letter to Dr. Bartman, Col. Hamilton writes :
" My command used your Peruna during our service In the Spanish
American War and I will say this, that It the War Department records are
consulted, It will be found that the casualitlea In my regiment were less
than In any other regiment of the Army Corps while at Camps Alger,
Meade and Bushnetl. The total deaths In my regiment, during the seven
months' service, were seven out ot a total number of 1400, I, ot course,
cannot help but think that Peruna certainly was a great benefit to Ay
command,"
In a recent letter, Col. Hamilton says :

In old age the mucous membranes be
come thickened and partly lose their
function.
This leads to partial loss of hearing,
smell and taste, as well as digestive dis
turbances. Peruna corrects all this by its efficient
operation on all the mucous membranes
ot the body.
One bottle will convince anyone. Once
used and Peruna becomes a life-long

THE BbEF PACKERS VICTORY.
Former United States Senator
Mason of Illinois, charges that Con
gressman Lorimer was instrumental in
mutilating the meat inspection bill in
the interest of the Beef Trust. In hiv
characteristic speech he said :
"It was the influence of Lorimer
that took off the stamping and dating
of cans of preserved meats, and I
oharge that this was done in violation
of the common law of common de
cency. "He secured, in the interest of the
packets, an amendment of the bill
whereby the marking is left so you
cannot tell whether the goods yon are
buying are live days old or fifteen
years old, and left if you have the
temerity to inquire what you are pay
ing for tho packer can reply ; Why,
you poor, dear, pin-headed American
citizen, it's none of your business."
What were the other Republican
congressmen doing and why did Pres
iduut lloosuvult sign the bill when he
declared that without the stamping of
dates the public would not be pro
tected and the hill would be "very,
very bad"? It must also be rememb
ered that the people have to pay tor
the inspection amountinu to. about
(H, 000,000 a year and yet are not pro
tected by knowing whether thojiuspoc
tion took place this year or leu years
ago. That is also "very, very bad."

Pe-rn-na Contains No Narcotics.
One reason why Peruna has found
permanent use In so many homes is that
it contains no narcotie of any kind.
Peruna has no bad effect upon the
system, and gradually eliminates ca
