If thin notice in marked your mibscilptiuu is due COMPLAINT OF NO MARKET. Tliore is much complaint coming from the farmers that they are unable to dispose of thoir produce in Oregon Oity. One said he brought two sacks of potatoes to town, offered tlieni to a grocer iiere, but oould only dispose of one, this partiooar merchant fear ing that he would be over-stocked. The town of Molalla buys all the pro duce that comes. It is not so large a town as Oregon Oity bat it has a mer cantile firm that has ginger in it. Oanby takes everything that comes. Oanby and Molalla can do this and Oregon Oity, a town fully as large as either in population if not in bnsiness spirit, has to take care that she be not over-stocked. Now we have a Board of Trade. We need one of two things. We need a general merchandise store tint will buy everything that comes and will sell everything that the Country trade demands or elsewe need enough en terprise on the part of the merchants we have to insure a market for the produce offered here. Suppose the Board of Trade look into the extent of the market here. If the merchants are willing to buy the farm products offered why in the name of business sense don't they advertise the faot. They know that the whole country thinks, whether it is a fi.ct or not, that there is no market here for farm products. If the Board of Trade finds that tiiere is no market then it had better see what it can do toward in teresting an enterpising goneral mer ohandise firm lifte Bobbins Bros., of Molalla or Oarltoa & Roseukrans Oo. of Oanby in putting in a store here. There is no necessity for this back woods system we are running nnder, Oregon Oity has a good agricultural territory naturally tributary to it, Instead ot offering inducements to bringjthis trade here we seem to place every obstacle in the way of its com ing. The idea of Oanby drawing trade from this territory and this town being right at the door of the Metrop olis of the North-west and having liver and steam and electrio rail tran sportation. Isn't this a thing to be proud of? If the businoss men in Oregon Oity oan handle the produce grown on Olaokamas County farms it is high time they were correcting the general erroneous impression that they can not Handle it. If the market is not here the Courier will do what it is Able toward lighting this condition FOR A GOVERNMENT DU1LDINQ. A Government building for Post oftiuo pumosos in Oregon Oity would add attractiveness to the town. Re moval of thd Land olllco from here de prived us of one of the boat arguments for a publio building. Rentals for post office and land oftloe quarters would have cost as muoh as the intor est on the cost of a Government build ing would amount to. I But Oregon was praotically with oat representation in Washington when the question of removing the land oilloe oanie to be considered. We were weighed down with so many crooked publio officials at that time nnder investigation or on trial that the authorities wore in no humor to listen to our protests against the re moval of tho land office So we now reap the Fruits of our folly in not con sidering the character of the men we sond to Washington to represent the State. Probably all othor towns in the State as largo as Oregon Oity havo unas Bronchitis For over sixty years doctors have endorsed Ayer's Cherry Pectoral for coughs, colds, weak lungs, bronchitis, con sumption. Who will take the mattor up and follow it to a conclusion? RIVAL REPUBLICAN FARMERS. Private Secretary Loeb, who is goneral factotum at Oyster Bay, is a faithful worker for his strenuous chief. Ho koeps his ear to the ground quite as closely as Mr. Koonevelt does and keeps track of the subterfuges and dodges of the rival Republican states men and does not intend they shall outdo, or attract more attention than nis master does. This keeps Loeb busy.Jfor the wiley waysf Fairbanks, Cannon, Shaw and the less well known candidates for the Republican nomination for president, require an active and fertile brain to cope with them. Loeb had. noticed that farmer Fairbanks had been publishing the fact that he was getting in his hay crop and not to allow his master to be outdone, he descended to subter fuge. He put up a job with Old Noah who cuts the grass at Sagamore Hill to await the appearanoe of a storm be fore attempting to "put the hay in the barn" .and then point out to the President the danger of the hay get ting wet unless help wa furnished forthwith. Noah's appeal to Mr. Roosevelt was promptly met and the diplomatic Loeb had the camera man take a snapshot of the President sav- 1 ing his hay, in oasn some doubting I friends of rival candidates should at- j tempt to prove that "Roosevelt is no farmer." 'lioeb's literary bureau did the rest 'and the correspondents j were all furnished with manifold copies describing how Teddy got in ' his hay b'gosh. The next move of Fairbanks or Oan-, non to oorral the buoolio vote is a waited with interest. In the coming political campaign' for congress the Republicans wi 11 1 have one Cannon and a number of squirt guns. 1 THE SOCIAL MUCK RAKE. Scandal mongers in New York and all over, the country are happy in the developmsnts of a sensational murder case, in which the parties concerned have been noted or notorious characters in the gay life of the metropolis. Stanford White, the victim, was a gifted man, the architect of many splendid buildings, and the designer of many works of art. He was edu cated oarefnllly and traveled extens ively and enjoyed the fruits of success in various directions. While his friends defend his memory there is ev idence that his life had a dark side and that he1 indulged during his leis ure hours in shameful frivolities. He came to an inglorious end at the hands of Harry Thaw, a young man with more money than brains. Iwho like him had sought, pleasure in forbidden paths, and whose defense will be that le was insane. The woman in the case was vonniz and beautiful, which is all that pol iteness can say for her. But the scan- dai-loving publio will hang on the de tails of the shame and shocking de pravity as they are brought out bit by bit, as they might over some sweet morsel for the palate. They love to sniff the scout of the social muck-rake. And why? The newsparers exploit it. and why? Murderer and victim nought pleas ures in an -atmosphere which amounts to an invitation to tragedy. The strata of sooiety that w ill be expoc ed to view in the investigation of this murder is not one that can be contem plated with any doeree of oride for the genius in arohiteotnre, the soiou of wealth or the woman beautiful, in 1 the metropolis of America. lhe tragedy carries a forceful lea son to ail, but few will profit exoept titt uirougn cue Darning wavB of er experience. Dalles Chronicle. MORE DOTAGE WANTED. If, as Sontaor Fulton says. Seore- tary Hitchcock Is in his "dotaca" Dr. Osier is a badly mistaken man. With ilitohcock as the test, it is not old men "in their dotage" that ought to he chlorotormort, but rather some of the yuong mou like Putor, Mclunley, and kindred ilk. What the layman knows of Secretary Hitchcock is, that tho limit of his offending seems to havo been the prosecution of certain persons who Had robbed tho poonle of Oret'oii of vast tracts of the public domain, lhe scaud,tl of this robbery and pillage was everywhere bruited before the prosoouhoiis began, aud everywhere there was a scanning ot tho horizon for some strong arm that would put an end to it. Even then it was believed that persons in lifh places were in league with the robbers aud that dislorigoiiient of the crim inals from their strongholds and prose cution of them would bo well nigh impossible. It was then that the old man they now say is in His dotage ap peared, and the result of his probity and interpulity is men in highest places of public confiilouco and honor unmasked, confronted with their gmlt, charged with thoir criminality by prosecutors, convicted of it by juries, and condemned for it by courts It Mr. Hitchcock had not done these tilings, would Sentaor Fulton havo done it and by it have saved the little of their public domain tlutt was left to tho people of Oregon? If what Secretary Hitchcock lias done is because of "dotage" thou God save to us the men who are in their dotage, and give us more of them. Corvallis Times. PE-RU-NA SAVED HER. Mrs. Viola Marshall, 1117 East Jack ion street, Springfield, 111., writes : "Two months ago when I sought your advice, and you told me that I was suffering from systemic catarrh, I bad gotten so bad that I could not bear the Jolt ot walking and had to Ho down most ot the time. "I began taking your Per una and now I feel like a new woman. "I can walk just as far as I please Without feeling any fatigue and I have taken only three bottles of Peruna. "I shall never cease praising Peruna, nor thanking Dr. Hartman for his kind advice." Systemlo catarrh claims many victims because this disease is not always un derstood, and therefore not correctly treated. What is needed is an internal catarrh remedy which exerts a healing effect on the mucous membranes of the entire body. Such a remedy is Pernna. The sin cere letters of those who have expe rienced Its benefits in such cases are evidence of its medicinal value, he caused to be printed the statement that Secretary Hitchcock . is "in his dotage." The old man is somewhat of a fighter, even if he isn't as young as he used to be. Eugene Guard. Congress lias appropriated three million a year for packing house in spectors, and next session it will re quire probably six million more for another lot of inspectors to watch the first lot and thus the machinery of government grows more complicated and fat jobsmultiply. Eugene Guard. The Cannon boom for president seems the outgrowth of tlia "anything to beat Bryan" idea. Eugene Guard. Summer Diarrhoea in Children.
