For county commissioner unless Mr. Brownell's ( officials "Bob" Beatie is the favor- ronsent was first obtamd. When Mr. Brownell's consent to .harKenriuer for commissioner went out, of course that was supposed to mean that Brownell's organization of precinct workers were to have the tip from headquarters to "get in" for Harken rider Mr. Harkenrider himself had no hand in the arrangement, but his friends fixed it up, and the upshot of the deal was that Brownell dm noth ing for Harkenrider, but Harkenrid er" friends gave Biownell a hand some vote. Now, unless there is some great "fixing np," Estacada will "even up' by voting for J. E. Hedges. Brownell's opponent. Greaves has worked for years in the paper mills at Oregon City and he was considered the labor candidate. Brownell pre tended to be in favor of labor having representation on the ticket He holds himself oat as a great sympathizer and friend of labor. So Greaves' friends expected their candidate to get a good vote in the precincts that were Brownell strongholds. But when the votes were counted the re salt showed np as follows : Barlow Brownell 34. Greaves 1 ; Beaver Greek Brownell 63, Greaves 8 ; Cascades Brownell 40, Greaves 2; Can by Brownell 75, Greaves 1 ; and bo on throughout the precincts where Brow- nel 1 reoeived a heavy vcte. In spite or tfrowneirs perfidy and bad faith, however, Greaves got a splendid vots and was beaten by only a little over 300. Here in Estacada there are many workingmen and they are beginning to realize hat Brownell's friendship extends only to getting their votes for himself. He has hern a nnmhnr nf paid workers and they are makine a be allied with him in his crooKed work will come in for their snare of scratches on election day.
