U'REN HAS MUCH FAITH.
Believes That All Candidates Will'
Stand
Firm for People's Choice.
W. S. U'Ren last week returned
from a trip in the Willamette Valley
in the interests orjstatement JNo. 1, of
the ..direct primary nominating law.
j Mr. U'Ren is spending much of his
time away from home at the present
time, and it'is whisepred that tiie in
terests of Jonathan Bourne, Jr., can
didate for the United States Senate,
are being helped along by a rigid sup
port ot Statement JNo: 1, of which
measure Mr. Bourne advertises him
self as ohampion.
"X find that the statement is beine
generally signed," said Mr. U'Ren.
'in Clackamas, Yamhill and I believe
n Benton counties, She candidates
will be .for the statement unanimously.
In Salem they are signing several
different kinds of statements, and
there is a division in other counties.
am reasonably certain, however,
that a majonty ot the members of the
next legislature will' be men whojiave
signed Statement No. 1. "
In reply Ito a question, Mr. UR'en
said he had faith enough to believe
that Republicans who had signed
Statement No. 1 would vote for John
M. Gearin for United States Senator,
providing that Democrat received a
larger number of the people's fcvotes
for United States Senator at the June
election than any other candidate.
"You may be sure," said he, "that
those whoare opposing Statement No.
1 will do all they can to secure votes
for Gearin in June, in order to put
the Repbulicans who have signed the
statement in the hole. I believe the
successful candidates will keep their
promise to vote for the candidate for
United States "Senator who receives
the highest number of the people's
votes at the June election,' regardless
of his party affiliation. I know Jtbere
are people who do not believe this,
and if it possible that such things can
be, it is high time that all of us
should know it."

Candidate for Representative. '
To the Voters of Clackamas Coanty:
1 hereby deolare my candidacy for
the nomination of Representative on
the Republican ticket. If I am nom
inated and elected I will, during my
term of office, advooate the popular
nomination and eieotion of United
States Senators, and I herehtter sign
Statement No. 1, of the Direct Pri
mary Law, as the greatest issue on
which I ask nomination and election.
During my term of office I will al
ways vote for that candidate for
United States Senator in Congress
who has received the highest number
of the people's votes for that position
at the general election next preceding
the election of a Senator in Congress,
without regard to my individual pref
erence. I will vi te for a law to put
tax on publio utility franchises as ad
vocated by the State Grange, and will
d) my part towards repealing the law
governing the burning of slashings..
J. A. TALBERT.
Some Information. . ,-
Republican voters will, orf primary
eieotion day, find the name of R. E.
Woodward the last on the list of can
didates for sheriff. He is now em
ployed by Mr. George 0. Brownell as
a member of the campaign quartet,
but he wishes the voters to distinctly
understand that there are no Brownell
or other strings on him ; that he is in
no political clique or combination,
and that reports that he has with
drawn from the race in favor of some
other candidate arepure fabrications.
He is in the race to stay, on his own
merits, and all Republicans can vote
for him on April 20 with the assnr-
anoe that 'all pledges made by him
will be faithfully kept.
R. E. WOODWARD.
