OREGON CITY COURIER, FRIDAY, JANUARY 5, 1906 , . fi FIRST GOLD BRICK FROM OGLE MINES i zz Promoters Arc Satisfied With Results and Will Resume Work in Spring. The first gold brick to come from the Ogle Mountain mines was brought in by J. B. Fnirclough, P. A. Fair clough, L. 0. Gerber, James Hatton, J., R. Wolf and John Francis, who are now in the city. They left the mines in charge of one man, and will go back in about two weeks to resume work. The brick is a small one, but the quality of the gold is fine, and the miners are more than satisfied with the showing made since the install ment of the new 5-stamp mill, which was operated six days, producing an average of $G0 per day on low grade ore. The mine is already on a paying basis, but the test is not a fair one, as Work so far has been up hill business, as the ore had to brought down through the dump. Results have shown that there Is more free milling ore at Ogle than - was expected and less concentrates In the Spring work will be commenced , steadily and on a large scale. There is enough ore now on the dump to run the mill for several months. The Ogle Mountain mine is the first in Clack amas county to reach an advanced stage of operation, and the promoters are perfectly satisfied with the show ing that has been made. For Ranges and Heating Stoves A Large Supply of the Celebrated Justly How the Tibetans Dreaa. Lay and cleric alike, the Inhabitants of Lassa are entirely similar to those of the rest of Tibet. There is Indeed but one difference even In the dress. In one province through which we passed the women use a turquoise studded halo as a headdress. In Lassa a fillet ornamented in the same way is bound close down over their hair, fluffed out on either side, and falls down over the Bhoulders. It Is one of the most becoming ways of doing the hair that I have ever seen, and for a certain type the entire dress of a wo man of Iiiissa would be a becoming costume for a fancy dress ball at home. The dress of the men and the women is very similar. There is a sin gle undergarment and 'one heavy na tive cloth robe, dun or crimson In color, and usually patched, which both sexes pull in around the waist with a girdle, the men pouching It at the waist to form the only pocket that they use. Earthquakes generally do their work with great rapidity, but there are ex ceptions. While Caracas and Lisbon were destroyed In a few minutes, the Calabrlan earthquakes beginning In 1783 lasted four years. Earthquakes travel across the earth at , velocities varying between several hundred and several thousand feet a second, the greater the Intensity of the shock the greater being the velocity. The sea waves that frequently accompany earthquakes also travel at tremendous speeds. A submarine earthquake naar the coast of Japan in 1854 gave rise to sea waves which traversed the whole breadth of the Pacific at the rate of 870 miles an hour. At Slmoda, Japan, the waves from this earthquake were thirty feet high. At San Diego, Cal., they were only six. inches high. A Peratatent Flarhter. The measures of Wilberforce in the British house of commons for the abol ishing of the British slave trade had a hard struggle before they finally pre vailed. On Feb. 15, 1805, Wilberforce moved "without entering Into any ar gument" for a bill to abolish the slave trade after a limited time and for a committee to consider its propriety, He had been introducing sucb a bill almost every year for fifteen years, al though bis twelve resolutions against the traffic were carried in 1789 without a division. But year after year the bill came to wreck, either In the house of lords or the commons, suffering defeat In 1708 because several of its support ers had gone to see a new comic opera. It was doomed to disaster again in 1805, but finally triumphed in 1807. The Mexican Bridegroom. The bridegroom in Mexico finds mar riage a very costly business.
