Two new corks the size of those used for wine bottles are required. These must be cut down to about an Inch in length and have the tops round - ed off caplike. Cover them very neatly and tightly with flannel or any soft material and take care there Is no Join over the flat end of the cork. Now take a nice piece of fairly wide col ored silk elastic about half an Inch shorter In length than the knitting nee dles you use most frequently and at tach it at either end to the corks. Muke the outside cover for the caps, which can be any pretty material, Joining the sides, turning In the raw edges at the bottom and stitching down to the flan nel. Milwaukle Grange held their regu lar meeting last Saturday. A good sized crowd was in attendance and all seomed to enjoy themselves. The reg ular routine of business was . gone through in the forenoon. This was followed by one of those good old Grunge dinners that has made Mil waukie famous. A sooial hour was spent after dinner and then the Grange was called to order and the meetiug hnuded over to the charge of the lec turer. The roll was then called and each member present responded by giving a short talk on a subject which had been assigned to him by the oap tain of his side in the contest. This proved to be the most mteresiing part of the program and some really fine talks were given. The best one of the day was given uy one of the younger members who spoke on the advantages of running a large ranch as compared with a small farm where truit and vegetables are raised. .Other talks were given on sncli subjects as "When to Spray and What to Spray With," "Blackberry Pruning," "How to Make Chickens LBy in the D'all," " II' w tn Keep the Boys Ilouie on the Farm," etc. Also, to keep the pro gram balHiiod some talks were given in a lighter vein on such weighty sub joots as "What I Know About a Mule." "The Kight Kind of a Girl tor a Wife." and "The Faults of Women. " After roll oall Side "A" was divided into two sections for a discussion on the question, "Resolved, That the government shall own and control the railways" the negative side winning out. The literary contest only runs tor two more meetings now and each side is trying hard to win out and as a consequence the Grange always has a good literary prorgam. PRIZES FOR PUPILS. Carll of this city, chair man of a committee, the other mem bers of which are Richard W. Mon tague, J. F. Ewing and Lewis H. Lam berson, has issued the following state ment regarding prizes for essays on Revolutionary topics: The Oregon Society of the Sons of the American Revolution offers prizes to the pupils of the public schools of the state of Oregon for essays con nected with the Revolutionary history. Prizes of $25, $15 and $10 will be awarded to the best three essays, in the order of merit, on either of the following subjects: 1. "John Paul Jones." 2. "Woman's Part in the Revolu tion." 3. "The Commissary Department of of the Revolutionary Army Compar ed With the Present." The essays are limited to 3,000 words, written in the student's own handwriting on one side of the paper. The essays must be accompanied by a certificate of the principal of the school attended by the writer, stating that the writer is a bona fide student of the school and has attended not less than four weeks during the school year of 1905-6. Each essay must be signed by thhe writer In his or her proper name and giving the postofflce address of the writer. Essays must be forwarded to Harrison G. Piatt, Commercial block, Portland, Oregon, so as to reach him not later than Feb ruary 1, 1906. In awarding the prizes the commit tee will be governed by these consid erations: : 1.. Historal accuracy. 2. Manner of treatment. 3. Orthography, grammar, syntax and punctuation. After being out all night the jury in the case of Mueller vs. Mueller, re ported to the Circuit Court Saturday that they were unable to reach an agreement and were discharged. Wm. J. Mueller brought suit against his father, Franklin T. Mueller, for $805 and interest. The young man, who is 23 years of age, alleges that while he was a minor he loaned his father $555, with cthe understandig that it would be repaid, and after reaching the age of majority worked for his parent, earning $250, and none of these amounts were turned over to him. Mueller, senior, contended that the boy's money was at the disposal of his father, while the former was a minor. Baptist Entertainment.
