GRANGE REPORT ON ROADS
Good Road Leagues Are Rec
ommended and Convict
Labor on Highways
Is Favored.
So important has become the ques
tion of good roads to the general pub
lic that the writer is pleasod to give
to the readers of The Courier the re
port of the '.'Oommitt.ee on Good
Roads," aa found in the work of the
Oregon State Grange recently held at
Forest Grove.
The ball is moving. Give it a kick.
Whon euoh a mattor as good roads is
taken up by a body of representative
people there can be but one result.
The State Grange, through, its subor
dinate Granges, has had ample oppor
tunity to study the subject of good
roads and what the committee, reoom
mends in its report has great weight
and should be heeded by those in
official life.
Col. Stefelknecht, in a previous ar
ticle, hit the nail on the head when
he stated that the secret of good roads
lies in prcper drainage. He is pleased
to see that the Grange is of his opin
ion. The report is clear and compre
hensive. As Maple Lane has so many chuck
holes, nrt one of which has been
filled and are growing deeper and
deeper, Ool. Stefelknecht hopes that
whut the legislative committee says in
regard to chuck'holos will be reart by
every road supervisor iu Clackamas
county. The report follows :
the
Worthy Master, and Members of
Oregon State Grange :
The subject of good roads is one of
very great importance and we are
pleased to note the fact that 'the im
portance of this suhject is attracting
the attention of thoughtful and pro
gressive people throughout the coun
try. Good-Road Leagues are being organ
ized and publio meetings held for the
purpose of arousiug publio interest in
the good-road movement. Also to
suggest ways and means by which
these roads can be had.
All our farm products have to be
transported greater or less distances
over the county roads, before reaching
markets or shipping points. The av
erage distance of this haul is esti
mated at 13 miles. The estimated cost
is 25 cents per ton pervmile.
And for the same haul over a first
class road the estimate is 8 cents per
ton per mile. This gi es us some idea
of the enormous loss to farmers by
reason of bad roads,
The National Board o' Trad) de
clares that the country is poverty
stricken in the midst of (its riches by
reason of the condition of its roads.
The cost'of constructing a first-class
permanent road is estimated at about
13000 per mile.) It is evident from
this estimate that a much larger sum
must be 'had than is likely to be had
under our present system of road mak
ing before this work can be undertaken
with hope of reasonable success.
Your oommittee is of the opinion
that the time has come when the gen
eral and state governments should
lend liberal aid to this great and much
needed improvement.
The government has contributed lib
erally to all important ways of trans
portation except the farmer's way. He
is left to hew out his own highways
the best he can. EPSSSS,
Some of our states are employing
their convict labor on the publio roads,

Memorial Lines.
Lines composed by Mrs. U. R.
James, in loving remomberance of her
son, Ira Seward, who departed this
life October 12th, at the tender ago of
9 years, 8 months and 2-1 days. He was
the oldest sou of Usuf B. and Lenora
R. .Tames.
Oh ! the home, so find and only,
ror deatn nas visuuu uui uu uuv-o
more,
And borne to its heavenly mansions
One we loved so dear.
Oh 1 how we miss yon, Seward dear;
Thy wl'o once made home so bright
and light;
Yet we know thy spirit is shining in
a more bright and glorious home.
No sorrowing thought can reach thee,
No grief is thine toduy.
God gives thee joy for mourning,
He wipes thy tears away.
Though sorrow and darkness enoom
pass the tomb,
The Savior has passed through its por
tals before thee,
And the lamp ot His love is the guide
through the gloom,
And the flower that was plucked in its
bud
Will bloom in the lighthouse above.
On that bright celestial shore
You have gone to meet your angei
brother,
Whom we bid farewell some twenty
one months before.
We loved you well, but God loves you
heit.
And has called you to rest, in his
mansions above.
Five lone weeks thy suffered,
But now free from all pain, sorrow
and fears.
How well do we remember thy'words,
"Yes, Papa, I'll be better to morrow."
But alas! his beautiful soul into glory
has gone.
Beautiful life with its crown now won ;
God giveth thee rest,
Beautiful spirit free from all stain,
Our's the heartache, the sorrow and
pain.
Thine is the glory and infinite gain.
Thy slumber is sweet,
We will not forget you, darling
Seward,
While the days and years roll by
But when we are called to follow,
We hope to meet in Paradise.
Calm is they slumber as an infant's
sleep,
But thy shall wake no more to mourn
and weep.
There is perfect rest, secure and deep ;
Only good night, beloved, not fare
well, A littlj while, and then we will meet
above.
God knows the way and holds the key ;
He guides us with unerring hand;
Sometimes with tearless eye we'll
see,
Yet, there, up there, we'll under
stand, Then, good night, good night.

"In conducting a large drug business

As these troubles are easily con
trolled if the right means is taken we
want to say to the people of Oregon
Oity that we guarantee our ood liver
pil preparation, Vinol, will cure hnng-
mg-on colds, stubborn coughs, bron
chial and lung troubles, quicker than
any preparation we have oversold,
because it is the most perfect prepara
tion of cod liver.oil ever compounded.
It contains no oil or grease to clog the
system and upset the stomach, yet it
does contain everyone of the fifty odd
medicinal elements actually taken
from fresh cods' livers in a highly
concentrated form, and is therefore
the best cod liver oil preparation ob
tainable. Vinol is not a patent medi
cine; everything in it is named on the
back of the bottle and you know what
you are taking, so without reservation
we indorse and guarantee Vinol to
strengthen every organ in the body to
do its work as nature intended to
cure coughs, colds, bronchial troubles,
increase the appetite, build up the
