Attorney-General Ciawford has ad vised the State Borrd of Canal Com missioners that they have a fairchauoe of winuing in a suit against the Port land General Electric Company to re cover 10 per cent of the not profits of the canal and lock business at Oregon City. In 1870 the Legislature male an ap propriation of 1300,000 to the Willam ette Flails Caual & Locks Company for the purpose of aiding in the construc tion ot tho caual and locks at Oregon City, and it was provided in the act that the company should pay the state 10 per cent of its net profits. The canal has been twice transferred since that time, aud the present owner, the Portland Genoral Eloctrio Oompany, contends that the obligation to pay the money rested only upon the original recipient of the aid, and did not fol low the title to the caual. The com pany also asserts that after deducting the cost ot repairs and improvements, there were no not profits. Attorney-General Crawford does not assert positively that the state has a good case, but thinks it has a bglitiiig chauoe. The net pronts wouia prou- alby bo about $1000 a year, as the at-tornoy-geuoral figures it, or f8000 back to the time when the statute or limi tations began to run, the statute hav ing been abrogated so tar as the state is concerned, two years ago. Governor Chamberlain has instructed Attorney-General Crawford to bring suit. Cough No Poison In Chamberlain's Remedy.
