'. I this notloe is marked yonr subseiiption is du HOP INDUSTRY. Oregon is a hop state and Clacka mas is a hop county. The hops raised in tho United States are grown in Oregon, .Washington, California and Now York. Oregon grows about as many hops as California and Washing ton combined, and New York pro duces about ono-third as many as Ore gon. It is not generully known time the area of lands adapted to 'jop rais ing is very small as compared with the immense territory to bo supplied with tho hop product. There is a vrevalent opinion that high prices for ihops during the last live years will cause tho planting ot numorous now yards and an over-production. There ia really no dangor tin this respect. The demand is increasing over the whole United States and Europe, that country never having raised hops onough to supply tho liome niarkot, while tho increase in acreage planted is confiuod to the three Pacifio states and Now York. The prico of hops may fall far be "low the present standard at any time. It will do so in times of depression ,ind financial panic. In such times the market for luxurios is tho first to fall off and the hop product, being among this class, is , among tho first to bo- come a dray; on tho market. The price of hops will drop, as horotofore, dur Ing timos whon pursuits jiud iudus t rios of all kinds are boiug en mod on at littlo or no profit. Considering the possibilities of this industry, tho undisclosed value of Olaokamas county lauds is' brought i'oroibly to mind. Trno values here in (ho Willumotto Valloy will not be realized until tho pursuits and indus tries to which tho Valloy is especially adaptod aro firmly and nuivorsally es tablished here. Tho notion that we can spare land for growing coreals must be j thoroughly eradicated. Our laud is worth too muoh for other and more protflablo industries. Tho possi bilities in tho hop'industry furnish but a single examblo. THE TAUOARTS. For sumo weeks tho press has been full of tho Taggart divorce affair. While this littlo opisode in the Tag gart family concerns tho public gen " orally ouly to the extent of furnish ing sousatioualism to satisfy u morbid appetite, tho case has exposed condi tions of an alarming nature existing in army circles. Officers revel in drunkenness and Jdobauohory. Epi sodes with other men's wivos soom to ho quite the thing. No morality, no virtue, no pride I What a defense in a time of peril may nation expect from an army olHoorod by men such as theso. This argues the necessity of a re t urn to a small standing army. The smaller tho bettor. When we have need of effective soldiers they must be drawn from the ranks of the common people. The response will oome from the farm, factory and the store whon the war note sounds. Hermits must at first he ofllcorod from tho regular army, but the fewer thoro are ot these tiie Hoouer thoy can bo got rid of and replaced by mon from the ranks who have not become pbysioal and moral wrocks through intomporauco and dis solute habits. Tho Russian soldiery were once tho terror of all nations. Russia is full of bravo men and a powerful army might have been gathered round her standards in her rocont war, had she not been infested with a multitude of dissipated generals and subordinate officers. Tho Taggart caso, in itself, is of littlo concern. As a revelation of army conditions it will awaken and astound tho nation. REGARDING FAIRS. Tho fair to be given by Molalla (Jraugo will undoubtedly provo a suc cessful enterprise. Tho rich agricul tural country surrounding the littlo town insures products of the farm in nuantity and quality sullleient for an excellent display. But tho enterprise and energy of those iuterustod in such i.u undertaking are its best guarantee r I success. With these qualities the .Molalla people aro well supplied. No doubt those local efforts will eventually merge into a county fair, riuoh an enterprise wonld bo a most desirable acquisition. A county, just as a e,ity, has certain objects that it should seok to attain. One of these objects is the securing of a thrifty, luaustrious population. Another is the bui.ding of good schoolhousos, good churches and good roads. Another is obtaining a clean, honest adminis tration of a county's public affairs. All of these are promoted by an in stitution that calls together enterpris ing citizens from every part of the county. They meet in friendly rivalry to compare the products of their toil. They engage in the discussion of top ics that enter into their practical, every-day life. Each one gathers a suggestion here and a new idea there Land all return home wiser and well compensated for the time and effort and expense a county fair entails. Progress grow,s out of ,the mooting and mingling together of men. All public-spirited men feel the impulse to go forward. Lot us advance. Let us have in another year a' county fair. NEE DED LEGISLATION. The littlo concern that some of our state officers have for ho taxpayers who support them is shown in tho fact that thoy take pairs to inform tho purchasers of land that lias been taken by tho state on mortgage fore closures that thoy can escape taxes on theso lauds about to be purchased by leaving a small balance . unpaid on them aud taking certificates instead of a deed from tho state, There are fine farms in this.couuty on ffhich no tax whatever is paid becauso tho owner has taken advantage of this subterfuge. A simple way to correct this abuse is to amend the law so as to require tho state to execute a deed on such salos and tako a mortgage for the un paid balance. Let us see that this is brought to tho attention of our noxt delegation in the legislature. Lot us have a delegation that has some real interost in tho wishes of the people aud some ability to secure what we want. The columns of thoCourior are opon to any citizen to suggest needod legis lation. It is coming time now to con sider those matters, and citizens through open discussion can outline fairly well the work that thoy will expect of their representatives in the legislature. The postoflice department has made a now ruling on mail matter addressed to patrons on rural routes which will bo of groat benefit in this country when tho reorganization of tho sys toin goes into effect this fall. Undor tho now ruling postmasters are allowed to forward papors as well as mail mat tor from ono office to aifothor whore tho person addressed is on rural route. In the many changes from one post oflice to another J;hat will result when tho new routes are established it will require several mouths for tho patrons to havo their mail properly addressed, aud while there will nocossarily be delays, mail of every charaotor will finally roach tho party to whom it was addressed. No city of si.e and enterprise should be without a committee, even if there is but one on it, to see that "the strangor within the gates" worthy it be ' welcomed and shown tho rosidouce and businoss attrac tions. Tho disposition is too often "to take him in" to his immediate sorrow and occasionally lasting re gret. Our citizens could profitably employ some one of integrity, cour tesy and good judgment to get busy with the visitor here in a right way. Talk about raco snioide I Why does not the government tax the bachelors aud those people who are married aud do not have ohildren and give each mother who gives birth to a ohild a certain sum of money? It might do somo good. Since the war bogan Russia has drawn down her treasury balance 451,- 000,000 rubles, nsod up a special war fund of 140,000,000 and borrowed 1,710,000,000 rubles, showing that tho war has boou oosting her about 5,000,- 000 rubies $3, 500, 01)0 daily. Throe hundred Chineso were admit ted into tho United States last mouth. There is no evilmioo that they have boon missed from tho four hundred and more millions of tho inhabitants of the Chinese empire. Mrs. Mary Huber. of New York, claims that her husband, whoso salary is $4 a week, has been leading a dou ble life and supporting two families. Thoro is a financial export who seems to havo them all beaten. "Mon who stay at home every night aro not good for anything," says Dr. Julia Holmes Smith. Wo don't know who Mrs. Smith is, but hurrah for her anyway. A machine has been invented that will manufeturo forty pies a minute. Now lot tho dyspepsia tablet manu facturer see what he can do to keep up with the times. It has been estimated that should anyone desire to purchase the rail ways of the world his outlay would amount to something like $36,080,-000,000. The cost of the world's wars since the Crimean war has been $12,263, 000,000 or enough to give $10 to every man woman and child on the globe. A handy and convenient way of pay ing debts without monoy would bo greatly Jappreciated by many people. Would-be investors take notice. Wizard Burbank is reported to have developed a golden plum. Tell us whore the tree is and the best method of shaking it. EXCHANGE TALK The opinion is entertained by well informed persons, and substantiated by evidence, that the soveral obstacles met by the flax industry in this state have been put forward by the flax trust in this country to starve out aud throttle all competitors on the Pacific coast. From experiments the fiber grown in this state has proved to be very oxcellont, and twine aud linen mauufacturios could b) carried on ery successfully in Oregon. The in cendiary firo at Salem last Tuesday was unquestionably oausedby the an imus of the trust against the industry in this state, flood ttiver Glacier. Tho Salom Journal . is excited over an alleged plot on tho part of Portland politicians to capture the seuaiorship. It's mighty dull in political circles when Colouol Hofer can't uncover a sensation that is worthy of a first pago scute head. Kosuburg Review. Tho digging of !the Panama canal is chiefly confined to freqneut changes of tho personnel of officials who are to iiavo charge of it. A good many mou are getting newspaper notoriety out of, it without doing a stroke of actual work, Aurora Borealis. Hut Shot From Neighbor. The population of Clackamas county, as shown by the state census, is 20,877. The gain is less than ex pected, since the population m 1900 was 19,568. Ulatsop, wnioli nan isiibo five years ago, now lias 16,045. Ore- goniau. Clackamas has been controlled by a certain political power mat nas looked more for personal aggrandize ment that to get the county on a good financial footing. Homosoekers are careful to inquire into the indebted ness of a county. The people are to be cousured, for at every olection thoy have had an opportunity to make a change for the better. A splendid chance presents itself at next spring's direct primary election. Woodbum Independent. Wisconsin newspapers are all send ing out 28-page suppiomonts. Under a new statute, the laws enacted at each session of the legislature are published in every paper in the state whose publisher is willing to perform that service for $100. Few decline, and thus there goes a copy of the ses sion laws into nearly every home. The Wisconsin plan certainly makes ignorauoe of the law as inexousable morally as legally. Hood River Gla oier. Judge McBride owes his bread and butter to Senator Mitchell. Why not, instead of McBride, appoint Mitchell as the successor of the late Judge Bel lugor. Woodburn Independent. Ex Governor Geor is quoted as say ing that he does not wish to be United States sonator. We are glad to know that thore is even one office the elongated Waldo hills statesman does not covet. Roseburg Review. The gentleman was probably mis quoted. It doesn't sound like ex-Governor Geer. No woman can look beautiful without good health. A woman's gund health depends on those organs peculiarly femi nine, and which so often heroine disor dered, causing misery and drawing-down pain. Nature's laws are ertrct. health endures if you obey them, but disease follows disobedience. The distressing complaints of women are often brought about by catching cold at a critical period, breathing foul indoors' air and long hours of work and nervous tension. l!o straight to Nature for the euro to the forest. It has brought me health and happiness. "Since my seventeenth year I havo had female complaint and irregularities. My general health suffered, I had pains In my back and lower limbs, my eyes were dim, and I became morose and un reasonable. "Mother sought the advice of our family physician, who prescribed for mo, but I grew no better. " then read of Peruna and procured a bottle. That one bottle was worth more than all the doctor's medicine 1 had taken previously. " I cannot express my gratitude. Pe runa has been a great blessing to mo." Nellie South. Miss Edna Moore, 46 Elm street, Buf falo, N. Y., Secretary East End Literary Association, writes: "I was a great sufferer from systemic catarrh, was extremely nervous, could not sleep, fainted easily, was very irrita ble, had a confusion of the senses, and got up in the morning feeling more tired than when I went to bed.
