HAM BATTLE AT THE FAIR,
National Guard VVi'l Take Part in
Mimic Warfare for Amusent of Crowd.
What promises to be the most real
istic sham battle in the annals of
mimic warfare is scheduled to take
place at the Lewis and Clark Exposi
tion July 21, constituting the crown
ing fualura of three days of military
maneuvers in which at least 1000
troops (it the Oregon National Guard
will ttiko part. The battle will be
made realistic by the shooting of can
lion and small arms loaded with blank
cartridges, and is expected to prove
one of the most popular of the many
features which have been arranged to
muke every day until the close of the
Exposition, Ootoixir 15, a special day.
Adjutant-O.inural VV. E. Finzer, in
noufereuoe with President H. W.
Goode of the Exposition, has arranged
the more important doUi Is. The
Guard will go into camp at GaarharC
Park on July !'!, remaining there six
duys and then p.'ocuediug to Port land.
During the liiHt two days of the en
campment at the Exposition, there
will be a dross parade each day, and
a grand review in honor ot Governor
Chamberlain and staff. A number of
competitive drills will also be hold.
The battle proper will be between
two detachments, ono wearing the
brown khaki uniform and the other
the blue. The Browns will entrench
themselves on the hillsido directly
west of the Exposition grounds and
await the app'oaeh of the attacking
Pilues. The Held artillery will supple
ment the entrenched forco, while the
cavalry will assist the at .tucking party,
operating from the rear or flank. The
details of tho attack ui'd the defense
Will be loft to the commanders of the
opposing forces, as strategy will count
in determining which side is the
victor.
The attack is scheduled to take
place at sundown on July 21, aud the
engagement is expected to last about
two hours. Tho hillside where the
Browns will bo entrenched reaches
down to Guild's Lake, tho surpassing
water feature of the Exposition, and
the entire maneuvers may bo watched
from the Bridge of Nations, which
spans tho lake and connects the main
land with the peninsula on which the
United States Government buildings
aro situatod.
LAND OFFICE TO PORTLAND.
Senator Fulton Is Ignored by the De
partment at Washington.
Today will see the end of the United
States Land Office in Oregon City,
and after that date the official name
of the office will be changed from the
Oregon City Land Office to the Port
land Land Office. Offices have been
moored in the Blazier building on the
corner of Washington and West Park
streets, and t he office will have a lit
tie more than halt the room they had
here and will pay about double the
rent. Register A. S. Dresstfr and Re
ceiver George W. Bibee and the cleri
ical force nave already commenced
packing the records and archives of
the office preparatory to the removal
which must bo done speedily, as the
office will be open for business in
Oregon City until 4 p. m., Friday,
June 30, and must be open for busi
ness in Portland at 9 a. m. Saturday,
Juiv l The officials and clerks will
resiJe in Oregon City this summer
and will go back and forth by oar.
Some surprise is ocoaBiohed by the
failure of the department to consider
the protests that have been filed at
Washington against the removal of the
office. When the notice was received
first here, a telegram was sent to the
Prosi lent, but no answer was received.
and later Attorney Brnce C. Curry
was sent to towns in various portions
or the district and ho Bocurod a vaBt
number of signatures of prominent
men to a petition to the President tor
tho retention of the office. These pe
titons were sent to United States Sen
ator Fulton at Astoria, and by him
transmitted to Washington, where
iJiey.have been treated in silence.
Removal of the land office to Port
land is said to be in line with the
concentration iiolicy of the depart
ment, and it is believed to be only a
question of time when other land
offices throughout Oregon will be dis
continued and consolidated with the
Portland office. Publio lands are rap.
idly disappearing and before many
years the government will have little
use tor the land offices at The Dalles,
Koseiiurg, JJurns, iiakeviow and La.
Grande.
