OREGON, CITY COURIER,: FRIDAY, MAY .5, 1906 CHANCES ARE MIGHTY SLIM Little Hope of Retaining Land Office Here. NOTICE HAS BEEN GIVEN Remonstrance Against Re moval to Poiland Will Be Sent to Wash ington. Attorney Bruce O. Carry returned Sunday from a week's trip in the Willamette valley, where he has been circulating a remonstrance against the removal of the Oregon Oity land office in Portlaud. ue secured a large number of signatures ou the west side of the Willamette but met with unex pected opposition ou thewest side, es pecially in Hillshoro and towns near Portland. It is a grave question whether or not these signatures will avail against the determination of the government to effect the removal of the office. The remonstrance will be sent to Washington, together with a strong letter of protest, but the failure to receive any sort of an acknowledg ment to the telegram 'sent President Roosevelt six weeks ago, has caused a gloom to settle in the minds of the opponents of removal, and the chances are believed to be slim, and well nigh hopeless. Secretary of the Interior Hitohoock iaunalterably opposed to rescindng the order of removal, and has given United States Senator Fulton little satisfaction. Mr. JJ'ultou has written to the department, setting forth reasons why the office saould stay where it has been for so many years, but no - reply i understood to have been reoeived.- Thii notice of removals under date of M-iroh 25, uuder order of the presi dent, ' and signed by Commissioner Richards, of tiie general laud office, as follows : Notice is hereby given that the President of the Uuited States by ex ecutive order dated March 21, 1905, has, pursuant to section ?251 of the re vised statutes of the United States, and by virtue ot the authority therein given, directed that the United 'Status laud offioe, now located at Oregon Oity, Or., be removed, with its busi ness, records, and archives, to Port land, Or. In pursuance of said executive or der, the United States Land Office at Oregon OHy, o Or., - w Ul br, ; parnia- nently closed and discontinued a (jthe close of busiueBg hours on June, 30, 1905, and its business records, and ar chives temoved to Portland, Or., on July 1, 1905. . Sived by Dynamite. Sometimes a flaming city is saved by dynamiting a space that the fire can't oross. Sometimes a cold hangs ou so long you foel as if nothing but d.vnnmite would cure it. Z. T. Gray, of Calhoun, Oa., writes: "My wife had a very aggravated cough, which kept her awake nights. Two physi cians conld not help her; no she took Dr. King's New Discovery for Con sumption, Coughs and Golds, which eased her cough, gave her sleep, and dually cured her." Charles and Fred Warner, students at the University of Oregon, made a unique trip two weeks ago from Eu gene in a canoe, leaving there at . 10 o'clock Friday morning and arriving in Oregon City Sun day afternoon at 1 :30 o'olock. The first "night out they camped on the river bank, cooked their sapper and slept under the canvas sail, and on Saturday night they slept in a far mer's barn, after depositing their stock of matohes with the farmer for the safety of his barn. The trip was a very enjoyable one, add the yonng men were well ; epaid for their exer tion. As the -fare from Eugene to Oreogn City is $3.40, and it cost them $1.40 to ship their boat back to Eu gene, they are ahead ot the game $5.40. At least six of the university students are building canoes and will make the same trip when the term oloses in June. MRS. KR0HN TWICE MARRIED. After Divorce Her Husband's Repeat ance Was Short Lived. Little pity is expressed for Mrs. Wiebke Krohn. who long ago had trouble with her husband, Clans Krohn, who, so she says, got drunk, came "ome late at night, beat her and palled her hair, and otherwise acted in a cruel and inhuman man ner. When this 'much abused woman could not stand the actions of her lord Saturday Evening Post Ladies' Home Journal Oregon City Courier and master longer, she applied fur divorce and got it. For long they lived apart, but at length the husband repented and the more he cast his eyes over the broad acres owned by Ins former wife, the stronger Ins re pentanoe grew, until at last he per suaded her, in aocents honeyed, that he had grown to be a better man and that if she would take him back to her bosom, he would load a goodly and righteous life. In a moment ' of toolishness Mrs. Krohn did this very thing, and the time was short nntil her spouse went back to the old ways and departed form the straight and narrow path. Now Mrs. Krohn oan bear the burden no longer and for the second time -she has coummenced suit for adivorce. and asks; that her hubsand be restrained from coming to her house or molesting her while the suit is pending. It is sinoerety hoped that Mrs. Krohn will not become a third-termer, should she win her suit, which is likely. Terrific Race With Deatl. "Death was fast approaching," writes Ralph F. Fernandez, of Tampa, Fla., describing his fearful race with death, "as a result of liver trouble and heart disease, which had robbed me of sleep and of all interest in life. I had tried many different doctors and several medicines, but got no benefit, until I began to use Eleotrio Bitters. So wonderful was their effect, that in three days I felt like a new man, snd today I am cured of all my troubles. " Guaranteed at Howell & Jones Drug store ; price 50o. " ' HARND0N WILL NOT MOVE. Refuses to Vacate to Make Room for Saloon No. 15. H. M. Harndon, proprietor of the Kozy Kandy Kitchen, on Main street, between Fifth aud Sixth, is in a peck of trouble over the attempt to oust him from the prerni es which he has oocupied for several years. Mr. For tune has seoured the place lor a new saloon from the owner, E. D. Kelly, who served notice upon Harndon to quit, bnt the latter is obdurate and in sists that he will not leave unless lie is forced out. Harndon clhims that he has a verbal lease of the building, and such a lease, bo he has been in formed by two eminent attorneys, runs a year before it expires. Therefore Mr. Harndon, secure in legal' advice, says that lie will not move, and be cause the location is a choice one, and also beoause there are now 13 saloons in Oregon City, aud two more1 con tracted for, there is a demand for the fifteenth. Mr. Fortune realizes that he knows a good thing, and contem plate a log front and a swell "dump" in the parlance of the "profesh. " A Creeping Death. Blood poiscn creeps up toward the heart, causing death. J. E. Some years ago I and my brother attended the Marquam fair and were much as tonished at the good displays of (arm products and live stock we saw. There were several hundred wagons and rigs of all description standing in the road and in the grove near -by and the fair ground was crowded. Everybody seemed to hav a good time, new acquaintances were made and the fair was a success, finan cially as well as in evory other way. On the way home we were wonder ing if such a fair could not be held in Oregon City and Came to the con clusion that our county sent could do even a little ' better.-" Had we a county fair ' last fall, it would have been an easy thing to get a big ex hibit of agriculutural products for the Lewis and Clark Exposition. If a list is circulated to raise funds for a oounty fair, let the committee not forget to call on Schmidt Bros., of Shubel. If something is to be done, it must be done soon, go we not only will have threshed grain and vegeta bles but grasses, clovers and sheaf grain also. Yours for success, GEO. SCHMIDT.
