Frank Sohreis, of Anaoonda, Mont., has benu visiting his sister, Mrs. Philip Bueklein. Mrs. Nina Devine, who was Miss Nina Caples of this city, is visiting at the home of Miss Echo Samson. Luvi Stehman, of Liberal, M. S. Hungate, of Molalla, and O. B. Tay lor, of Aurora, were in town Satur day. Mrs. G. W. Grace and daughter El len returned Monday from a few days' visit with relatives in the oouutry. J. W. Dowty was in the city Mon day from Ourrinsville. Mr. Dowty i well known in this county as a breeder of flue horseflesh. Dr. Andrew J. Montgomery, of Georgia, is in the city visiting his cousin, John Montgomery. He is traveling for his health. Couuty Judge Ryan left Sunday for Grants Pass t o attend the meeting of the Oregon Good Roads Association, and returned home Thursday. Bailey Hill and George Batdorf started Thursday with two teams for Arlington, in the vioinity of whioh point, the latter has rentd 1000 acres of land. F. X. Mathieu, of Ohampoeg, was in town Satutrday. He is well known as the sole survivor of Oregon's pro visional government and is 88 years of age. Ross Farr, of Huntley's drug store, was successful in his reoent examin ation for a senior druggist's certifi cate. He had the third highest stand ing in a list of 27 applicants. Miss Linnie Kayler, a teaoher in the Molalla schools, passed through the city Saturday enronte for home. She has been in the hospital in Port land where she was operated on for appendicitis. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Bray, of Se attle, passed through the city Satur day night enroute to San Jose, where they are going for the benefit of the health of ;Mr. bray, who is the father of Mrs. J. K Hedges. Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Carey are vis iting with the latcer's parents, Mr. and Mrs. S. Hutchinson. Mr. Carey i in the employ of the Oregon Water Power & Railway ompany, where he holds a responsible position. Many friends of John Stout, father of Lucene Stout, will be sorry to learn that hed died in Newport re cently, after a ten days' illness. Mr. Stout was formerly a resident of (Jlarkes, and lived in this county many years. Miss Bouita Ralston, who has been visiting Mr. and Mrs. 0. A. Miller at Willamette, was called to her home m Everett, Wash., Saturday by the illness of her mother. Miss Ralston, who is a gifted elocutionist, may re turn here after the Lenten "season and give a recital. Prof. W. G. Beattie, principal of the west Oregon schools, has accepted a poition as superintendent of the Alaska Indian school at Sitka, with a salary of $1500 per year and per quisites, and will leave, with his famliy for Alaska about July 1. This will create a vacancy in the principal ship of the West Side schools. Prof. Beattie spent a year in Alaska in charge of Indian sohools. L. B. Armstrong nf Mankahnrff. celebrated his 62d birthday Sunday at iiome, and Mr. and Mrs. W. W, LOCAL NOTES his bration, returned home Monday night. Charles Oglesby, who has been working on the excavation for a cel lar under Brady's saloon on Main street, between Fourth and Fifth streets, found Spanish silver coin, about the size of a quarter of a dollar, in good state of preservation. Dick Wilson, the negro who is in the county jail awaiting sentence for committing numerous burglaries in this oitv and Portland, will spend the remainder of the time that he passes in .jail with a ball and ohain attached to his feet. This is the penalty Wil son will have to pay for making an attempt to escape. Saturday morning Jailer Nehren went into the jail to lot Wilson out of the steel cage, where he has been , spending the nights, in order to give him the free dom of the corridors. When he went in the jail later in the day he was sur prised to find no trace of Wilson, but a search revealed his hiding place on the roof of the steel cage. The col ored man had passed through a space of less than seven inches between the window and the iron bars, and he will not be allowed outside of the steel cage again during his incarcera tion in the jaiL.
