age, is quite ill at his home. .

acute attack of neuralgia in his right

Boss Farr was in Salem this week

Mr. V. G. Eby, acoompanied by her

Mat Watawa and family have arrived

Wash., where he has been holding a
clerkship a the legislative session.
W. E. Grace, of Baker City, visited
friends here Monday. He has just re
turned from a two months' trip to
Honolulu, where he went in oompany
with W. J. Patterson, of Baker City.
Mr. and Mrs. L. P. Williams, of
Beaver Creek, J. E. Stanley, of New
Era, J. G. Elliott, of Damascus, and
S. A. D. Hungate, of Molalla, were
among the out-of-town visitors Mon
day. Bev. G. A. McKinlay, of White
Salmon, Wash., passed through the city
Friday enroute for home, and was the
guest of Prof, and Mrs. W. Gilbert
Beattie while here. He has been visit
ing his ranch in Polk county.
Fred Meyer, for a number of years

Ogle Mountain mines, where he has
been nearly all winter. Six men have
been working steadily and the pros

Crook county, where there 'is quite a
colony of Clackamas county people.
He will be back here in about two
months, leaving his family in Madras, ,
where he will return in the fall.

isans, held a social Thursday night
at the close of its business meeting,
and a banquet was given by the losers
in the membership contest. A I ritf
program was rendered, and speeches
were made by members i f the Assem
bly. ,
Mr. and Mrs. Harry M. Malon have
returned from San Francisco, where
they went several months ago. Mr.
Malon while there took a course of
instruction in the linotype school, and
will take a position in Portland. He
was formerly connected with the
papers in Oregon Gity.

H S. C Phelps, who lives at Union
Hall, two miles east of Canby, was
thrown from a horse on Main street
Tuesday, and sustained severe injur
ies, three of his ribs being broken.
He is well known here, having been
employed in the woolen mills for a
number of years. His age is close to
70 years.
Charlus Grider has been awarded
the lot on Falls View given by Mrs.
Helen L . Stratton as her donation to
the subscription for the South End
road which was taken several years
ago. The lot was disposed of by
raffle and brought $18. Monday night
the drawing took place and Grider
was the lucky man.

W. H. Bonney, who lost a shingle
mill and a sawmill by fire near Logan
Friday morning, states that both mills
will be rebuilt without delay. His
loss was $0000 and there was no insur
ance. The loss inclnded 70,000 nianfn-'
factured shingles. It is probable that
the origin of the blaze was due to a .
spark from burning slashings near' the
mills. mt '

and grocery store'on Main street to
H. P. Brishtbell, lately of Charlston,
111. Mr. Brightbell has also secured
residental property on Seventh street,
and will remove his family here
within 'a short time. Mr. Matheny
will, for the present, remain in the
store as salesman, Wallie Spahr, a
baker recently from Chicago, has been
employed by H. P. Brightbell.

Rev. J. H. Beaven, who recently re
signed the pastorate of the First Bap
tist church to go to the Baptist church
of Walla Walla, Wash., returned Wed
nesday from an extended visit in New
Jersey with his brother, who has been
seriously ill, and who accompanied
Mr. Beaven to California, where he
will endeavor to recuperate his health.
Mr. Beaven will go to Walla Walla in
April and will oooupy the pulpit here
until that time. -
William Fountain, who is wanted
by the Portland authorities on several
charges of larceny, and of obtainnig
money nnder false pretenses was ar
rested Monday , night at Willamette.
Prof. T. J. Gary saw the man in his
store there, and telephoned the po
lice. Fountain's partner, whose name
is Clark, was arrested here Monday
afternoon, but Fountain fled through
the back door of a saloon and made
his escape. He has been taken to Port
land. Proctor & Beers' sawmill, which
burned Thursday, had a capacity of .
27,000 feet of lumbei daily, and was !
the largest of the two mills owned by
Proctor & Beers and situated between ;
Sandy and Cottrell. The total loss ,
is fi000, with no insurance. It is gen- '
erally supposed that the origin f f the :
hre was due to carelessness, someone
leaving combustible material exposed ,
to flames. There was no watchman at !
the mill, and it is presumed that the
firm will rebuild.
