The best organio law is written under the inspiration of arouBed patriotism and daring times when the best efforts ot a state s best men are enlisted in drafting the fundamental laws on which the structure of state hood shall be built. Such were the conditions that gave to the United States constitution its immortality, It has proven a pillar of rock in the time of storm. Seas of dissention have beat against it bnt it has not fallen. It has stood when the perils of revolution assailed it and it will endure throagh the mutations of time, for it is more than the handiwork of man it is the inspiration of a time when men's souls yearned to break forever the -bonds of tyranny that bound them, and to substitute there fore a guarantee of mental liberty, the divine right of man. During a period immediately pre ceding the days when North and South met in the terriflo struggle of civil war, our Oregon constitution came to light. It is the great work of the representatives of ten thousand pioneers.' The structure they built for a state's foundation is worthy this star of the West it is rightfully the pride of Oregon. The men who made it were patriots. They were drafting the fundamental law of the land they had won through untold privations, hardships and suffering. It is not strange, therefore, that the oraving of personal ambition has not warped nor marred this splendid docu ment. , Nor is it strange that our fathers builded so wisely that un worthy ambition grows restive under the restraint this constitution imposes on their avarice. These are the men who today are calling for a constitutional conven tion. They use the men who form the political close corporation that sucks its existence from the credulous popu lation it chooses to call its constitu ency. They have no notion of im proving the constitution. June the 20th, the occasion of the an nualencampment ofJtheOregon Depart' ment of the Grand Army of the Re public. These old soldiers are used to hospitality and attention ' on these occasiona We trust they will not be disappoit ted here. Such gatherings are a substantial benefit to a town in the way of giving publicity to its enterprises and resources. Oregon City should, therefore, prove herself an entertaining hostess. Puttingjaside the mercenary view, the patriotism of a people is kept aglow by its old soldiers. We revere the memory of out fallen dead and we are ever ready to pay a tribute to those who have survived the storms of shot and shell The latch string is out. A plan is beintf formed bv prom inent fruit men to take over a large tract of land in Clackamas county, plat it into small fruit farms and place them on (he market. The plan s as yet incomplete, but it is prob able that the land will be partly cleared in subdivisions of 40 and 80 acres and an orchard started on each farm before it is offered for sale. The track now wider consideration con sists of 2000 acres, lies south of Col ton, in UlaoKamas county, and is owned by J. Harrison. It is said that George H. Lam her eon, seoretary of the state board of horticulture, and Professor Lake of Oorvalhs are interested in the enter prise. Mr. Harrison was in Portland few days ago. says the Oreeon journal, wnen tne'idea was discussed. It is claimed that western Oregon is as good as any section of the state for growing export apples. Thousands of acres of laud olose to Portland have been permitted to remain uncleared and in a state of semi-wilderness, while fruitgrowers have sought loca tions in the valleys of the Rogue River, John Day river and other sections. "There is no question in mr mind that the country around Portland will produoe as good export apples and other fruits as can be grown in any other section, " says one fruit man. In the counties of Multnomah. Clackamas, Columbia and Yamhill are thousands of ares of timber lands that have been logged over and burned over and loft in a jungle like condi tion. These are all fruit lands in the best sense of the term. They will some day be covered with orchards and their fruits will be shipped to New York, Chicago and to foreign countries." Edyth Tozier Weatherred, in des cribing a recent trip over the Denver & Bio Grande Railroad, says in "The Exposition:" At last the goal of the ambition of years has been reached marvelous, wonderful, grand and inspiring Royal Gorge is on either hand. The only disappointing thing is you only have one pair of eyes, while the train darts in and oat of tho tremendous chasm. If any who have never seen it are wondering how it looks just go and see. Thousands have tried to des cribe it, yet every attempt falls short of giving the subject justice." If you contemplate a trip East, write W. 0.
