Ben Brown, of Kent, Oregon, visited his daughter Mrs. Geo. Rider, a few days last week. Messrs Jackson and Penrod have gone to the coast for an outing. John Bhoda got his leg badly mashed last Friday while pulling logs at the mill. Mrs. Heartley, of Ft Jones, Gal., is visiting ber sister and daughter, Mrs. J. Hoffman and Miss Laura Hearsley.' Ed Br&dtl is suffering considerably with bis arm. BI-xkI poison is feared. Dr. Dedman, of Canby, is the attending physician. j Mrs. Allie Smith, of Portland, is vis iting ner sister, Mrs. Wm. Randall. Mr. Wm. Randall and lamily, Mrs. Wmlth. and lamilv leave ttus week tor a two weeks otuing at Wilhoit Sprfngs. Mike Bowman has his new house well nigh enclosed. , Mr. McDonald has part of the lumber on the ground to rebuild a house on his farm. Fred Hoffman returned Sunday after an absence of nearly two yeirs traveling by wagon for bis health in Southern California and Arizona. His health is much improved. Another runaway to report, but we won't give bim away this time. One of our young gallants rode out to Hog Hol low last Saturday on a special errand and tied his horse securely, he thought, but when he wanted his horse the bri dle was there but no horse. Audible , sounds could be heard, but as we prom ised we would not give him away we will say no more, hut if you bad held your ear to the ground you could have heard the birds say, "walk, poor Will." . Supervisor Staehely has a force of men - and teams grading the hill in south New Era to a seven per cent new grade. It will also be graveled, as soon as grading is finished, A. L. Larkens and 0. Orem went to the mountains Monday. They have not reported yet the exact number of bear killed. E. N'yer is suffering with a very sere foot. Boys take warning; cows do not make good saddle horses. Mr. Frank Grim is building a barn which is nearing completion, tireenwell is the workman. large Mr. Working Night and Day. Bair, Mr. and Mrs. Howard Eccles, Emma Evans, Mabel Knight, Lawrence Bair and Ed Bair spent Saturday at Chautauqua. Many Canbyites attended the dance at New Era last Saturday night. Ed Bradtl is seriously ill at his home in New Era. Volney White spent Sunday at Canby . The new warehouse of Grash Bros, is about completed and adds another building to Canby. Judging by the number of warehouses Canby merchants handle a large amount of bay, grain and potatoes. Methodist camp meeting was fairly well attended Sunday, there being many visitors from all parts of the county. Horace Patch, Frank Patch, Stanley Wang and Rex Hand all left Monday on bicycles for the coaet. Miss Roberta White spent Sunday with relatives in Canby. Mr. and Mrs D. G. Clark have return ed from their trip east, Mr. and Mrs. George Scramlin are so journing in the East. While there they will visit tne Bt Louis Exposition. Jonah . Baseball Players And Foot Racers! Louis J. There is a band of horses for sale at A. B, Strowbridge's place. Geo. Clark has sold bis farm but does not give possession until January. Mrs Clark bought the farm in 1873 and has lived here most of the time since. We will feel lost when we miss him. ' from our midst. Eugene L. Arthur, whose remains were buried at Logan on the 18th was about 40 vears of age. He has one sis ter living, the only near rslative. He was a grandson of David Arthur, the itret settlor In this part ot the country , and the man for whom Arthur's Prairie was named. Rev. Rudolph Zurbuchen, Logan's eloquent young minister, preached the funeral sermon. L. H. Kirchom has returned from 8t, Loui and reports the fair a grand suc cess, lie says there is so much t see thtft it is confusing and one needs a month to go at it in a systematic way. No Pity Shown. Miss Dollie Stehman and mother, of Dawson, Alaska, are the guests of Mr and Mrs. Levi Stehman. Tbey were 10 days coming from Dawson to Portland, showing transportation services are good to those points. Master Clyde Hannagen celebrated his birthday last week by having a number of his fellow playmates in to spend the afternoon. Russell Bros. are past Wright's bridges with their railroad ties. Each "uncle" he visited refused to advance even a quarter, the sum he asked, on the car riage. To a police officer, who asked where he secured the carriage, he said that his baby was dead and he had no further use for it. The recent oil discoveries at Pratum, in Marion county, which were at first looked upon with suspicion, seem to be the "real thing." A number of oil experts have visited the find and pronounce the pros pects ex.eneni. SOUTHERN OREGON GOLD FIELDS. The Briegs gold mine which has caused such a rush of gold hunters to southern Oregon, has been bonded to E. T. Staples, a prominent citizen ot Ashland. Boylan and myself left our homes Thursday afternoon to ' hunt for deer in the mountains near the Clackamas river. We camped at the Johnson cabin that night. The next morning we rode our horses about two and one-half miles to where we were going to leave them. Mr. Boylan set bis gun over a log and it started to fall. He canght it by the Seven miles from Roseburg on the ranchmuzzle to straighten, it up. In so doing BPBINOWATER. The young people of the church will have a social on the evening of tne 30th. Everybody is cordially invited to attend. Tbe writer attended the Clackamas County Pomona Grange on the 14th, which was held in the tine, new nail ot the Eagle Creek Grange. It was well attended. Fifty took the fifth degree. The guests were royally entertained a sumptuous dinner and supper being served. Tbe long-looked-for rain has come at last, and all vegetatign has revived and looks bright. William Bard, wife and daughter have returned from California, where they went for Mrs. Bard's health, which has improved very much . Al Lacy, wife and daughter were the guests of Mr. Bhibley Sunday, The most of the bay is in shelter. The crop was rather light as are moBt of the crops this year. The recent rain will give a very good crop of late potatoes. The water is low, yet they are making good headway. , The Nash shingle mill, successor to Dodge, is now running full time. The mill is making first class shingles. Mr. Sever Rainsby reports crops very light on Molalla Prairie as well as in Clackamas county. Mr. Larson informs us that the dry weather is killing his pumpkin trees and the cabbage vines are drying up. Mr. Will Staudinser had a thrilling experience a few evenings ago on east Main street in south Meadowbrook with . some wild animals. Mrs. C, L. Staudinger visited Mr. Orens Sunday. Mr, i . 0. Anna Sperl, of Sellwood, visited her uncle, Fred Yobanii,(and also her grand mother, of this place, last week, A pleasant birthday party was ten deied Johnnie Damm on July 13th in honor of his 20th birthday. A large crowd wa present, aud all enjoyed a good time until the wee small hours Fred Yohann has purehssed a new fancy top buggy. The girls are wonder ing who will have the first ride. Mr. Scheer is building an addition te his barn. George Koch is doiug tho work. The barns belonging to Mr. Etsel and Mr. Klinger are almost completed. A very pleasant surprise party was tendered Miss Lucy Stier on the -0th in honor of her 18th birthday . A large number were present and all enjoyed a good time until a late hour, when all went home wishing Mis Lucy many more happy returns of the day. Disease takes no summer vacation. John Blakemore, Third and Davis streets peddled his baby's carriage through the north end last night trmg to raise the price of a drink. He visited scores of pawnshops time and again, but had met the gun was discharged, the bullet strik ing close up under his left arm and coming out between the shoulder blade and back-bone. He suffered great atony and pain. It was sometime before I could leave him to go for help three and one-half miles where people were camped picking black berriea. One person went to the settlement for help and three went with me to where Mr. Boylan lay suffering. We made a stretcher as best we could and carried him about one and one-half miles. When assistance came we carried him seven miles to his home where his wound was dressed by Dr. Haveland, of Eetacada. He suffered nntil Sunday morning at 7:35 o'clock, when be breathed his las. The funeral services were conducted at Bpringwater and the remains were laid to rest in Sprfogwater Cemetery on Monday afternoon, July IS. Mr. Boylan was a true Christian, being a memder of the church for many years. He was Superintendent of the Dodge Snnday School at the time of his death. He was a most estimable citiien and neighbor.
