OREGON CITY COURIER, MAY, JANUARY 8, 1904 I f i 4 y 4 H Democratic and r Republican Parties &s Seen Bit tb fy" otn 01d tlilzeri. Clackamas, Or., Jan. 2, '04. Editor Courier: In an article in a late Oregonian the editor claims great vir tues for the Republiuang party, but con demns the Democratic party aB a party of negation. By your permission, we will compare notes a little. I understand the Republican pfirty to beaputy that will trample the consti tution ol the United Statea under foot for political gain ; a party that believes it is right to exercise might over right, if decision requires, to giia political or commercial ends: a party that favors and enacts class legislation legiHlation th it aids the rich to sret richer at the ex pease of the poor; a party already com mitted to imperialism and grasping for more in the-same direction ; a party that rewards bribery by appointment to of fice, and winks at the crimes of U. 8. eenators who buy their way to the sen ate ; iu fact, a party as full of political corruption as an ej(g is full of meat and is trying to crowd more in. The editor further says: "The Demo, cratic party has no other purpose in view than opposing the Republican party." Why, bless me, it seems that such" opposition should be considered a virtue. But let ua look a little further. The Democratic nary, as a party, be-J lieves in living strictly up ty the consti tution of the United States and to the laws made in pursuance thereof ; is op posed to class legislation in all forms ; favors equal taxation that the rich may bear a full share of the burdens of the government with the poor. The Democratic party believes in the sacredness ot our trea'ies with other nations, and believes in keeping such treaties inviolate until legally abrogated ; favors the lowest rate of taxation coriBist ant with good government economically administrated; has always stood b' labor, and today is labors beBt friend. The Democratic party, while is revers the constitution as it is today, ever r-ady for amendments, that are is to meet the demands of a progressive age, nor ever thinks of jumping the bars in advance of legal authority. The Democratic party is a law abiding party in which auarchy could not live a single day, a striking contrast to the party that iraraplea law under its feet to gain political ends. The principles of democracy are the foundation of nature's economy-eq'jal and exact justice to all, aud, it seems to me, the Democratic party is the best ex ponant of those principles of any party today. Oregon Lodge No. 3 is a lodge with a history, it being by right the oldest lodge of Odd Fellows west of the Missouri river. The Icharter for the local lodge was sent from New York around the Horn in tLe early days by ship, but after reaching San Francisco it was di verted to the lodge at Honolulu and never arrived here. Had that charter arrived the lodge here would now be Oregon No. 1, but while waiting for an other charter to arriye for the lodge here two other Oregon4odges got ahead of this one in getting charters, although this was the first Odd Fellows lodge or ganized in Oregon, or, for that matter, west of the Missouri river, and with the completion of the old year the lodge reached its 50th birthday. Burglars take Only Whisky Depot Saloon fobbed by Unknown Persons Late at llight, The Depot saloon located opposite the Courier otliee, on Seventh street, one block above Main, a as burglarized last Friday night by cutting a hole in the floor of an adjoining storeroom and tear ing a hole in a thin partition, letting the unknown thieves into the saloon. All that was taken so far as can be noticed, was several galloons of whisky, which were missed from a keg which was half full betore the burglary. In the morning only a small quantity remained in the bottom of the keg. No clew has so far been found to the thieves, although the case is being in vestigated as fully as possible. The method of entrance was most unusual and the entry into the saloon through the small hole in the partition seems to indicate.that at least one of the burglars was vtry small of stature. No money is left in place over night, so nothing of value was taken except the whisky It ia thought probable that the theft was the work of hobos who noticed the proximity of the place to the tracks, and the corner offered a gojd place to work because of its darkness. Although the robbers must have had tools with whicn they cut holes in the floor and pry off several boards from the partition, Two slot machines in the place were undis turbed. It seemed easy enough for them to break these open and take what money they contained. Basket and Pie Social. Paine's Celery Compound Permanently Cures Sick and Nervous Headaches that Make Life Miserable. Sick and nervous headaches are amongst the worst ills of life. The man or woman who is subject to headache at irregular intervals, goes through life hearing a load of misery and wretchedness that is terrible to think of. Headaches as a rule, result from a dis ordered condition of the nervous system. Mental excitement, loss of sleep, bodily fatigue, and disordered digestion are exciting causes. When the brain becomes tired and debilitated, the whole nervous system is weak ened, and headaches result. If the liver is sluggish, the kidneys inactive, and digestion deranged, headaches invariably follow. To cure and prevent headache, the nervous sys tem must be strengthened and vitalited. The most persistent cases of headache, nervous feebleness, and sleeplessness, are permanently cured by I'aine's Celery Compound) it is the great reconstructant of the nervous system. Mrs. Henry Westrick, St. Clair, Mich., tells of her release from suffering as follows: " I have been troubled with dyspepsia and sick headache for a number of years. About every week I would have t bad spell of sick headache, but since I began using I'aine's Celery Compound, my dyspepsia is gone, and I do not have any more headaches. I feel better than I have for years." No Need Soiling the Hands with DIAMOND DYES Diamond Djt are uy and cleanly to 0. Made for borne economy ; never disappoint.
