Why do not some of the rublic spirit ed people of Oregon City who labor for the good of the community, see what can be done towards establishing a free public library here? There is no move that could be made that co'ild and would work more good for the younger gener ation than the establishment of a library which would be free for the public, lhe library at first need not be extensive in scope, but could be built up trom email beginnings '0 proportions that would work uncalculable value. There are hundreds of young men iu Oregon City who would spond more of their time in the reading ot good books and less of their time in carousing, if there were a place where they could go of an evening andpass a few pleasant hours poringover the works of some good author. The Clackamas county potato farmer may perhaps be able to learn something from his most successful rival in the old country. Germany bats the world in potato culture, largely because a ber- j man farmer rardv plants seed potatoes 1 from hs own fields. If he cannot get j fresh varieties 'Jrom a government ex. 1 periment station, or from some remote district or foreign country, he does the next best thing by exchanging witfa his neighbors as far away from his own farm as possible. The difference be tween the isoii of the hills and that of , the valleys aids him, and if bis fields lie in low, wet ground, he sends to the dry, sandy hill slopes for bis seed, while j the dwellers on tbe uplands plant po- tatoes grown in the heavy soil of the river bottom.
