EDUCATION AS A SOLUTION
OF THE RACE PROBLEM B "-sySL.

I HE race problem will not be solved by colonization
nor by extermination.
IT CAN ONLY BE SOLVED BY HONEST, 8YM PA
TH ET1C CO-OPERATION BETWEEN THE WHITE AND
BLACK, BETWEEN THE NORTH AND THE SOUTH.
I believe that a new era has already begun for the colored race.
This hopefulness is not alone in statistics, but in conditions. THE
SPIRIT OF INDEPENDENCE IS GIVING WAY TO THE
SPIRIT OT SELF HELP. The question (which he himself is
beginning to solve) is not alone, What shall be done with the negro ?
but, What will he do with himself?
"Destiny is not about thee, but in thee ; thyself must make thy
self," 9 has been truly said. "Freedom must not be a bequest
but a conquest." THERE IS A GRAND WORK BEFORE THE
NEGRO LEADERS OF THEIR OWN RACE. The illiteracy, of
the masses must bo reduced, the criminal tendencies of the lower
classes must be checked, the productive capacity of the wage earner
must be increased, the domestic life of the race must be improved,
their citizenship must be safeguarded and ennobled, AND THE
DEVELOPMENT OF PERSONAL CHARACTER MUST BE
STIMULATED.
T
VALUE OF THE KINDERGARTEN
I By W. T. HARRIS. United States Commissioner of Education
,IIE kindergarten is THE BEST SYSTEM YET
DEVISED for the period of transition from the
family to 'the full fledged school. What may be
called the discipline of the kindergarten is in the
highest degree humane. It resembles the nurture
iof the home, in which MOTHER LOVE IS THE PRINCIPLE.
It resembles the school in that it has regular set tasks, classification
of nuT)ils and cradine in what may be called a course of study
Its course of study varies from that usually found in the school by
liavinff what are called gifts and occupations in it. It does not
j0me to the use of the alphabet, printed or script. THE CHILD
DOES NOT LEARN TO READ IN TRUE KINDERGARTEN.
It ia too abrunt a transition from the home to requiro the child
o learn a new language, A LANGUAGE ADDRESSED TO THE ,
iiEYE INSTEAD OF A LANGUAGE ADDRESSED TO THE
EAR, and to become eye minded instead of. ear minded at the
age of four at five-jears. The age of seven years ia the best time
for beginning the art of reading.
WHY AMERICANS HAVE DYSPEPSIA
j J By Dr. C. A. EWALD, University of Berlin
HE importance of eating slowly has been told a thousand
times. I repeat it THE MANNER OF EATING
IS AS IMPORTANT AS THE MATTER. It is a
subject of frequent comment among persons troubled
with indigestion at home that when they travel they
lelish and digest the food served to them in hotels. Yet, as a rule,
this hotel food is neither so good nor so carefully prepared as what
is served at their own tables. But at home they eat too quickly.
THEY BOLT THEIR FOOD IN AMERICA. In hotels they
liave less to do. They eat slowly to kill time. As a result their
ligestions are improved.
j DYSPEPTICS SHOULD NEVER FULLY SATISFY THEIR APPETITES.
They should avoid hard boiled eggs, meats with tough fibers or
I 118, pork, fat portions of lamb or fowl, as well as all freshly
1 ',' articles, cabbage, peas or lentils. White meats, such as veal,
i v. game and venison, are "easy to digest BUT MUCH

IviEN ARE WHAT WOMEN MAKE THEM
By the Countess Von BOTHMER
ANY women remain unmarried from conscientious motives
or been use the right man does not come, for THERE ARE
FEW WOMEN IN THE PRESENT DAY WHO
'ACCEPT TUElli FIRST OFFER WITH GRATITUDE.
! It is the fashion to say, "Women are what men make them,"
and this is true in a certain sense. But it is much more correct to
eay that MEN ARE WHAT WOMEN MAKE THEM. Every
race becomes decadent when the women fail in their duties.
I Let it be the ambition of women, should it be their fate to
marry, to prove themselves noble, unselfish wives. Should the
inestimable joy of motherhood be theirs, let their strongest endeavor
be ' to train their children in such a way that, WHATEVER
THEIR STATION IN LIFE MAY BE, THEY MAY DO
HONOR TO THEIR COUNTRY.

ARE THEY
WELL?
Unless they are, good health is impossible.
Every drop of blood in the body passes through and is filtered by healthy kidneys every three minutes. Sound
kidneys strain out the impurities from the blood, diseased kidneys do not, hence you are sick. FOLEY'S KIDNEY
CURE makes the kidneys well so they will eliminate the poisons from the blood. It removes the cause of the
many diseases resulting from disordered kidneys which have allowed your whole system to become poisoned.
Rheumatism, Bad Blood, Gout, Gravel, Dropsy, Inflammation of the Bladder. Diabetes and Bright's Disease,
and many others, are all due to disordered Kidneys. A simple test for Kidney disease is to set aside your urine
in a bottle or glass for twenty-four hours. If there is a sediment or a cloudy appearance, it indicates that your
kidneys are diseased, and unless something is done they become more and more affected until Bright's Disease
or Diabetes develops. '
FOLEY'S KIDNEY CURE is the only preparation which will positively cure all forms of Kidney and
Bladder troubles, and cure you permanently. It is a safe remedy and certain in results.
If You are a sufferer, take FOLEY'S KIDNEY CURE at once. It will make you well.
Soma Pronounced Incurable '
Mr. O. A. Stlllson, a merchant of Tampico, 111., writes: "FOLEY'S
KIDNEY CURE is meeting with wonderful success. It has cured
L some cases here that physicians pronounced incurable. I myself am
able to testify to its merits. My face today is a living picture of health
and FOLEY'S KIDNEY CURE has made it such."
Had Lumbago and Kidney Trouble
Edward Huss, a well known business man of Salisbury,Mo., writes:
"I wish to say for the benefit of others, that I was a sufferer from
lumbago and kidney trouble, and all the remedies I took gave me no
relief. I began to take FOLEY'S KIDNEY CURE, and after the use of
three bottles I am cured."
