A penniless laborer employed in the acid room of one of the aper milk at $2 per day bought ll'A acres of rolling land at H ..rdscrabble for $350 on the install ment plan. The land was uncleared, excepting that the trees suitable for cord wood had been cut down. He built a log house of such timber as he found on the plnce, and got a cow, chickens and a few hogs. By strict economy, though he had a wife an industrious one and three children to support, he paid for his place in three years. ,Now he runs a geveircow dairy, selling milk in the city. There are hundreds of acres of free pas ture on I he west side and there is no reason why others cannot do likewise. No Loss of Time. Howa d Secures Conventln for This City. the The American Federation of Labor, the recognized labor organization of the Pacific coast, will hold its next annual meeting in Oregon City. This much to be desired result was brought about by Secretary J. H. Howard, who attended the meeting at La Grande. This means that 1,000 laboring men, delegates to the annual meeting nithe American Federa tion will make Oregon City their home in May 1904. Oregon City is a delight ful place for the meeting of conventions and grand bodies and Mr. Howard is to be congratulated upon his good work. ' Pioneer Meeting. Damascus, Or. Editor I notice in eeveral counties of the state reports of pioneer meetings in which the native- sons and daughters join, and as Clackamas connty is one of the oldest settled counties in th Btate, I have wondered why we did not have such meetings in this county. I have talked with quite a number of pioneers and their dependents, and they all seem to think that a like meeting should be held in this county at least once a year. &6ide Irom the pleasure oi me annual meeting of the old pioneeis and their de- e ndai t, such meetings ougni to oe oi lireat value in gathering historical data, that many limes can oiily be obtained from the actors in the pioneer events of Oregon, at first hand. Whv could not a meeting be held in Oregon City without delay and effec' an organization, so that we could havea county meeting this season, and so that this matter might further be talked over at the State Pioneer Associ aion Mseting, when it occurs in J une of this year at Portland? The visitors at the Lewis ana uiarKe Fair will w ant to know a great deal about Oregon and the early Oregon history, and it will be a g od idea lor the people of Oregon to brighten up on their early history through organizations of this kind. Will some one take the initiative in calling a meeting at Oregon City to dis cuss the plans of this organization? Yours Truly, Warren Greenwell. THE HOUSEFURN1SHER. for 7 KNIGHTS OF PYTHIAS. Pass Resolutions cn the Death of Joe Fromong. At the meeting of th Knights of Pythias on last Wednesday evening the following Resolutions in regard to the death of Joe Fromong were passed. RESOLUTIONS. Whereas, it has pleased an all wise maker to remove from our midst one of our be'oved hrothers who had lived and toiled amongst us, a man we all loved and respected for his many good quali ties of head and heart. Therefore we as members of Cataract Lodge K of P., Resolve, that in the death of Brother Joe Fromong that Cataract Lodge haB lost a true and devoi '.d member who loved all men and all the world and had naught against any man. In his dath we have lost a brother who was true to his lodge and its teach ings, to his wife a true and loving hutband and the county and state a mauly, honest and splendid citizen. We understand howlutile it is to pass resolutions touching the character and conduct of those who have gone on be fore, but to him we pay the last and best homage that the living can psy to the dead. KEsoLVED,that we spread at large upon the records of this lodge upon a page set apart for that purpose a copy of these Resolutions, and seed a copy to his family and have the same publisbeJ as a tribu'e to his memory. Triday, Way 15 a "HE WHO RUNS MAY READ" THE RECORD OF BINOER H ERflAN IN THE LAND OFFICE. Fraud Dupllcl y and Rottenness Lead to His Removal. Joseph Schell Scores Bin, er Hermann. Sumpter, May 3. To the Editor: No honest citizen, be lie a Republican, a Democrat, or a Socialist, can conscien tiously vote for Binger Hermann for con gress. As I am not a politician, nor speaking for any political party or against, I must say a a citizen and adviBe others not to vote lor singer nermann. Binger Hermann has lost to Uregon many millions of dollars' worth of tim- bei and other lands through, willtul neg lect ol his duties. 1 know what I am speaking about, be cause I have brought the timber frauds of Oregon before the department of the Interior, and have forced in present in vestigation in these frauds by reluctant officers I went through the Depart ment of the Interior in Washing on, D. C, presented evidence of the frauds, made inquiries and made the most abom inable discoveries. I wrote to Binger Hermann and received letters from him and therefore I am not talking through my hat . All the satisfaction I conld get Irom Binger Hermann was that he re ferred me to silent partners of the frauds ; to them he wanted me to hand my com plaints. It was a case of sending one from Herod to Pilot. I did not listen to his advice, but went to Washington to Secretary Hitchcock and lodged my com plaint in due form, the effect of which everybody knows, and no one felt the sIiock more than Hermann. Had I list ned to Hermann, timber stealing could not have been Btnpped. I do not want to make the public be lieve these general statements without other proofs than my say so. Any one can go to anv lana omce in uregon, iook tnto the records which are exact copies of what Binger Hermann received and his decisions and behavior lavoring ap parent frauds amounting to millions of dollars' and that for many years, gave Secretary Hitchcock just and press ing reasons to give Hermann a free pasB to Oregon. This is information to intelligent, and honest citizens and voters, and at the same time a challenge to Binger Her mann that he willfully and knowingly lost to the btate of Oregon within his term as Land Commissioner, more than lOeenators and 10 congressmen for 10 years can procure for Oregon under the most favorable circumstances. I challenge Binger Herman if he dares to deny it. I am not bluffing, but look ing for an issue. I am standing on solid ground. Secretary Hitchcock cannot handle the special timber frauds any bet ter and cannot know anv more about them in their details than the postmaster of Portland can handle personally every letter or know their foments. Becre' tarv Hitchcock was not slow to act when special cases were brought to him per. sonally. Binger Hermann knw ex. officio the inside of the cases tainted with frauds, but he never acted. He referred me to the receiver of the local land offices, and Secretary Hitchcock re ferred me to special agents from Wash ington, ouch was the dinerence orac tion between the Secretary and Her mann : not difference in form only but in Buhatance; one was wilfully blind, the other used searchlights, Binger Hermann was and ! persona non grata in Washington in general, and especially witb the present auminiBtra' tion. I was there and made it a point to test the wires, and I can Bay that to elect Binger Herman to congress is a diegrace to Oregon, a Burprise to Washington, and and an insult to to the present Kepuo lican administration, besides a public calamity. Binger Herman, if elected, is not and can not be of any benefit to Oregon, even if he wanted to, and those who will vote for him are willfully blind to their own interests. It is not mv purpose to tell the public for whom to vote. As a Catholic priest I have no interests in party politics, I have no political friends, am not look' ing for political fa ors, as they are of no value to me. but since 1 have been iook ing into the timber frauds, having been asked to do so by so may people to save their homesteads againBt timber specu lators, I have found out that Binger Her mann was the main cause o( this enor mous and irreparable loss to the state of Oregon, of untold miseries to thousands of poor families on honest homesteads. and ol fabulous wealth into the wrong ful Dockets of soulless corporations. If elected, he goes to Washington and knows all about the inside business of everything as some claim it. Evidently so, like the old experienced fox knows the inside of the chicken coop.' Voters.be intelligent and conscien tious, and do not vote for the man who has so much hurt you and your child ren : put aside your feelings and follow your sense when you yote.
