DIMCK, Manager, frT There was quits a good deal of jollity and fun in the air at the paper mills and the Electric plant across the river on last Saturday. An artificial timber claim, manufactured cut. of a dry goods box, with a neat little cabin home upon it, surrounded with bending trees in full leaf made from pussy willow branches wa8 presented to a bunch of boys who had just relumed from The Dalles whither they had gone to locate some timber claims at which they had nib bled a month or so ago. The parties who who went to The Dalles were Samuel Phiester find Wm. Sheebaa members of council, Ed Sheehan, Wm. Fry, Oecar Fosberg, Ernest Mathies the salconist and David Kinnaird who went along as general pilot and guardian. Sometime ano a smooth, nice talking young man approached these hoys and interested them in some timber claims near The Dalles and they "bit" to the tune of $25 per head. The smoth young man pocketed the money and disappeared. As the parties had pever seen the'r land and did not know what they had bought and as the time was rapidly drawing near for another pay ment to be made on tha claims and to the locator, the4 boys concluded they would all go in a body to the Dalles country and see just what they had bought. In order to protect themselves and be sure that they were to get some thing betore they paid any more money thy took David Kiunaird along with them. Mr. Kinnairdisa surveyor and an expert ou timber matters. When they reached The Dalles it did not become necessary for them to leave the boat. The land they had bought was not in sight and neither the locator. Mr. KinnairJ made arrangements by which no more money was to be paid until the claims were finally and definite ly Unrated and the purchasers were satisfied with what they had bought and thev -It returned to Oregon City It may turn out that the claims are alright and the boys will get what they bought and it may turn out and more than likely will, that they have in vested just so much in hot air. Half way between Barlow and Aurora Monday morning the dea l bo i y of a man was found lying beside the railroad track with the head and shoulders bruised and broken, indicating that the unfortunate person had been struck by a train. An investigation revealed the fact that a freight train which had passed along few minutes previously had passed over the man, who was lying in a stupor on th? track. Further investigation de veloped the fact that the man's name was Dan white and that he had pur chased a ticket Monday morning at Portland and boarded the south bound passenger . He was in a state of semi-intoxication and became obstreperous, and finally! became so abusive that just above Barlow the train crew was forced to forcibly put him off the train. After the train's de parture he startjd on down the track to wards Aurora and had proceeded ouly a little way when he evidently became tired and stupefied from drink and lay down beside the track vith his head almost against the rail. A few minutes later a freight train came rumbling along. The crew saw the mm but as he was in no danger so long as he lay etiil they made no attemt at stopping. Half a dozen cars had pissed by him when he woke up and raised his head. He was so near the track when he raised his head that a protruding oil box struck him, killing him instantly. The body was picked up and taken to Barlow and Coroner Holman was tele phoned for. ' He went immediately to the scene and brought the body to this city an inquest was held Tuesday morning where the above facts were brought out in the evidence of the train crew. A bottle of whiskey was found in the pockets of the deceased.
