Denies That It Was Responsible For
Action of Salesman.
In these columns last week the Cour
ier had something to say about fakes and
fakirs and in particular about the do
ings of a certain agent of the Chicago
Portrait Company. While it appears
that all the Courier said about the agent
and the method he took to get business
was true, yet the Chicago Portrait Com
pany, denies responsibility for his acts
and have discharged him from their
service. The Portrait Company is high
ly recommended by financial papers in
the east and is doing, as far as the Cour
ier knows, a legitimate business. The
trouble seems to have been that they
have gotten a few scamps into their em
ploy. The Courier in no wise desires to
apologize tor what It said in the last is
ues as all jve said is true; at the same
time we a9 not care to put the Chicago
Portrait Company into a false position.
Of coarse they are responsible for the
men in their employ and must stand
good for their acts.

The firm of Fairclough Bros & Co.,
comoored of P. A. and J. B, Fairclough,
and John and Eugene Lewellyn, are ar
ranging to stock up their new warehouse
on Main street on a large Bcale. They
fxpect to deal in wool, hides, hay, feed,
flour, oil, white lead, cement and land
plaster, also shingles, and will run an
up-to-date business establishment.
Dr. C. M. Strickland in something
more than a dog fancier. He owns some
of the finest streins of coolies on the
coast if Dot in the United States. He
has one entered in the sweep stakess at
Portland in the bench show thia month
that is as fine as they make them and
will with fair sailing and no favors win
the blue string from eveiy thing in sight,
E. II. Barker, a former resident of
Oregon City, who of late years has been
much in Washington and California, has
been in thU city during the past week
on business and paying a visit with his
wife to hir father's iieooie. Daniel Wil
liams. Mr. Barker ha' several desira
ble houses and lots in Oregon City which
be desires to pell, lie will make bis
home in the future in one of the states
mentioned above. Mr, Barker has been
much in the hotel busineB and was
burned out at Cheaw, Waph . He will
locate in some goud town wtiere he will
find a good opening in the hotel busi
ness.
Died. '
At the home of his daughter, Mrs. G.
Wallace, of Highland, on April 6th,
Johannas PoBt, aged 79 years, 9 months
and 14 days. After-a long illness he
was laid to rest in Highland cemetary
on April mh. The deceased was a
native of Sweden, and resided in High
land for the past 28 years.
Once again the grim reaper baa swung
hit scythe and another good citizen of
Clackamas county has fallen by the way
side. This time it was a man in the
prime of life and in full enjoyment of all
of bis mental and physical powers. C
B. Willian, of Elyville, departed this life
ot his home in that village on Monday
at high noon the 6th, day of April of
that most dreaded of all diseases, con
sumption. He was 36 years and four
months old at , the time of his death
His remains were laid to kest in Graham
cemetery on Wednesday, April 8th, 1 903
His wife and three children survive
him.

Testing the Eyes
