The laying of a cornerstone for the
Gosnold memorial on May 24 at Cutty
hunk, Mass., marks the beginning of
work on a shaft which Is to commemo
rate a hitherto neglected spot which ia
rich in historic tradition.
On the 24th day of May, 1602, Bar
tholomew Gosnold, with thirty-two

companions, landed on Cuttyhunk is
land. They built a fort and storehouse
and engaged in barter with the Indi
ans. This storehouse is believed to be
the "first habitation buljt on the coast
by Europeans.
The memorial shaft is to be built of
rough field bowlders from the rocky
hills of the island. It will rise sixty
feet from the base and will be a land
mark for vessels passing through Buz
lards bay and Vineyard sound.

THE CRUISER DIXIE.
Wnrahlp That Carried Relief to
Stricken Martinique.
The warship Dixie, which has been
sent as a relief ship to Martinique, is a
converted cruiser and has for some
time been used as a training ship. She
recently returned from a ten months'
cruise In European and West Indian
waters. In this cruise she was manned
by a crew of 700 men, most of them ap

prentices and landsmen who were be
ing trained for duty in the United
States navy.
The Dixie before the Spanish war
was one of the fleet of the Morgan line.
She is a steel cruiser of 6,145 tons dis
placement and has a speed of sixteen
knots. Her armament consists of eight

tery, with a number of smaller guns.
