The citizens convention of Clackamass county composed of delegates from aU , the precincts of the county, uon-partl-an in character, with a sincere md de termined purpose to relieve the over burdened taxpayers of the county from, the selfish domination of the most cor rupt ring that has ever fastened itself upon any people; and at the same time to redeem the once good name i Clack amas county from the further control of a political "boss," who has not hesi tated upon proper consideration to bar ter and to sell its character and reputa tion to the highest bidder, here by pledge ourselves to work unitedly to gether for these great ends, willing- o subordinate partisans! ip to patriotism, that justice already too long de'ayed. may be meted out where ' due and civic r'ghteriusness may ag-iin prevail among: our people, hereby aek the co opemtion and active support of every voter in the county without regard to previous polit ical aliiliations for aid in the coming: contest. We further agree and publish the fol lowingi eclarations and .statements oE financial status of the c unty : First We demand that the election of United States senator shall be by di rect, vote of all I lie. iiuonle. thereby re moving as far as can be occasion for wholesale bribery in.il corru tion witlu ! the endless si-andals that bring di-grace j upon our present mo In of selecting a semi' or. Third We view with alarm the pres ent financial conditiou in the country. In 1893 after the extiaordinary ex penses connected with the construction! of the court house, the suspension bridge and the Baker's Ferry bridge, amounting to about $H0,000, the county was in debt $57,925. . It was at the next election thereafter that the affairs oi the county were practically 1 given over into the hands of the present ring-. Since then the indebtdness of the has been accumulating at the astonish ing rate of over $10,lHiU per year and careful odiei-i Is now pla -.e the indebted ness of the county at $750,000 while others equally sincere, tlx the amount at $200,000. Fourth By comparison, we note ac cording to the otlieial figures that it cost, exclusive of roads, $3 64 per capita to pay Ihe running expenses ol Clacka mas county lor a ynir. For the same service it, cost $1 70 in Washington conn tv; $l.(il in Marion; $1.08 in Linn, audi $2 03 in Lane county.
