Near Reitzeburg, Transvaal, the Brit
ish captured a Boer convoy and 25 prie-
oners.
The Lalrobe Steel Works of Chicago,
111., haye sent back to Alabama the 300
imported negroes.
The democratic state executive com
mittee of South Carolina has ejected
Senator McLaurin from the party be
cause he is a black republican.
The imperial Chinese troops plunder

Gibson Bowles, conservative, in a

The Vienna Fremdenblatt says that if
Germany wishes a tariff war, Austria,
Russia and the United States will be
ready to undertake it.
A heavy rain and wind storm did se
rious damage throughout a large portion
of North Dakota.
At Monticello, Fla., Simon Williams,
a murderer, in trying to break jail shot
and killed lteputy Sheriff Kilpatrick and
was himself ehot dead by another officer
At Muncie, Ind.. Peter Tillbury called
on Mrs. Mary Torry tonight and, be
cause she would not marry him, threw
carbolic acid in her face, which burned
out her ee and frightfully burned her
breast, neck and arms.
A slight quarrel between two boys
near Memphis, Tenn., resulted in a diul

legs broken by rifle' balls.

Anti-clerical demonstrations took place
in Madrid, Saragossa and Barcelona,
Spain. Police charged the crowds.
' According to Asiatic advices, Japan's
government is in great difficulty .because
the empire's resources are insufficient
for the. heavy military expenditures, and
possibly the country is drifting into a
war with Russia, but whatever the out
come might be, Japan will,, ere many
years pass, be compelled to fight for ex
istence at heme. Russia is planning to
absorb Corea, regardless of Japan' s or
England's protests.
