died today at his home in Portland at
the age of 69 years.
The government will reduce the troops

The Latrobe Steel & Coupler Works,
of Chicago, have imported from Alaba

25 women and three preachers.
Free trade between the United States
and Porto Rico will be proclaimed on
the 25th.
Seven hundred schoolteachers have
sailed for the Philippines. Porto Rican
schoolteachers will have summer school.
Charles H. Allen has resigned the gov
ernorsbin of Porto Rico to hunt a better
political job in Massachusetts, an o his
secretary in office, W. H. Hunt, suc
ceeds him.
In Cape Colony the Boers held up a
supply train on the 21st ; the English
lost 21 men. The same day 300 British
soldiers had an all-day fight with Boers
in the mountains near Oraddock. Once
more the military authorities at London
are satisfied that thj war is nearing its
end. The jingoes made a grand display
at the occasion of presenting the free
dom of London to Lord Milner, of Cape
Colony, who can't stomach Lord Kitch-

Several thousand piles, from 42 to 80
feet long, are being cut on the Santiam
for Mare Island, Cal.
J. P. Morgan is gradually gathering
his forces to contest with Standard Oil
for the kingship over New York's and

The American Locomotive Co. of New
York city will enlarge its capacity from
425 locomotives yearly to 1000,
Garret P. Serviss, the scientist, ex
presses the opinion in the N. Y . Journal
and Advertiser that the intense heat of
the eastern part of the United States
