A man's ' liver and stomach are twin machines that work together, either to make or unmake. If they work wrong, tney aepieie auo poison his blood. Impure and impover ished blood mean sickness and death. If they work right, they purify and enric!) the blood. - A man whose blood is rich and pure, and whose liver is active cannot well be unhealthy. Headacnes, Dinousness, in digestion and costiveness, which men gen erally disregard, are Nature's warnings tnai uie twin mccaaniBm, siumai-o aim liver, is working against, instead of fot him. Dr. Pierce's Golden Medical Discov ery is the best medicine to use under these circumstances, it creates appetite, cor rects all disorders of the digestion, invigor ates the liver and 611s the' arteries with rich, red, healthy blood. As an invigorat ing, restorative tonic, it ts tar superior to all the malt extracts. It is the great blood maker and flesh-builder. It does not build sickly, flabby fat as cod liver oil does, but the firm, muscular tissues of health. IS THE TIME to clean house and repaper youi rooms and paint your house and Murrow In the constant pressure of inore clearly defined events one need not over look entirely what is going on in Arabia. The Yemen Arabs have revolted against their conquerors, the Turks, and there has been a sanguinary battle in which about 6,000 men have been killed, and the Turks were victorious. For a very long time these Arabs have been ground under the corrupt and cruel sway of the Ottoman system, with no other means of redress than revolt, but always with the same result. The troops of Abdul Hamid swarm down upon them, kill a few thousand and a peace is patched up only to be broken by the uprising of another tribe. The Arabs are a hardy and brave race, but all hope of successfully opposing the sultan and his iniquitous system is hopeless because the tribes have no unity of purpose and are torn by internal jealousies, living and fighting very much as the original Ishmaelites did. PORTLAND ORE t I V J aaii..w... - i With the Hooley development in view it is quite natural that there should lie a crazy movement on the part of every body to go into speculation and operat ing. This English financier, who is now undergoing bankruptcy investiga tion in London, received as considera tion for promoting 15 companies no less than $43,000,000. Altogether he got $70,000,000 out of the public. He is now charged with deliberate fraud in the. transaction, and what perhaps is the most sensational part of the revela tion made by the omcial receiver is that the assets will not pay 4 shillings on the pound. The effect of the curious disclosures upon the general public of Great Britain is to produce a conviction that any man who can make $70,000, 000 ought to be put in prison on general principles. It is the Hooleys who are at the bottom of all socialism. An enterprising newspaper in London has succeeded in provoking a discussion as to who is the best dressed woman in England. It is carious to note how deep an interest the public take in this matter and how the innumerable corre spondents rage over their respective fa vorites. Still more interesting is it to note that tbe discussion has settled down to about six distinguished ladies of society. Glancing over the large amount of writing that this subject has produced, one inevitably comes to the conclusion that, after all, to be well dressed is of more importance to a great part of the world than to bo well equip' ped or well behaved. The emperor of Germany is rer jrted by a Berlin correspondent as 88' ing to a distinguished personage wi'n whom he was conversing and whr had ex pressed some surprise at his indifference to England's attitude at Fashoda: "Oh, I care very little about what is going on in Africa. Eren in Europe matters are thrown completely in the back ground by events in the far east I am convinced that it is there that Gorman commercial prosperity is to be develop ed. My heart is set upon this. What is now going on in the Philippines and elsewhere in the far east I consider to be of the utmost importance to Ger many." The American Society For the Pre vention of Cruelty to Animals at its annual meeting took measures to extend its labors to Cuba and Porto Rico, with tbe idea of suppressing bull baiting and cockfighting. It is curious to reflect that these places have a singular horror of that form of publio amusement which we oall glove contests, the cruelty of which is inflicted on a lower order of animals than comes within the purview of the society.
