The best watchmakers' oil comes from the jaw of the shark. About half a pint is found in each shark. Queen Victoria is said to take a great Interest in the ritualistic controversy which now threatens to produce a crisis iu the Church of England, but she care fully avoids taking a stand. As she is the official head of the Church of Eng land great anxiety is felt by both sides as to her action. But so far she has succeeded in presenting a most discreet impartiality. The latest event in the controversy has been the dismissal of two curates of St Agnes' church, Liver pool, by their bishop iu consequence of their advocacy of auricular confession. A conference of the farmers of sever al counties in Illinois has resulted in a call for a national convention of farm ers for the purpose of forming a nation al party representative of the agricul tural interests of the country. In the declaration of principles the organiza tion appeal to every farmer in the United States to join hands in effecting the nomination and election of farmers as members of congress and members of the legislature. Remember, A DOLLAR SAVED IS A DOLLAR MADE NOTE THE FOLLOWING Nntlve Philippine GlrU. The Philippine maiden is usually very pretty, with a graceful, supple figure. Her eyes are large and shaded by long, dark lashes and her hair is black in col or, long and glossy, and it is her chief pride. She gives it a great deal of care and attention, frequently anointing it with oil of the cocoannt, which prob ably gives it the peculiar gloss. The young girl usually wears her hair hang ing loosely down her back, but the older women buiH it up in a fanciful knot, often adorneh with flowers. Next to her hair tht Philippine girl prides herself on her feet. She is not, like the poor Chineso women, forced to have them of diminutive proportions, but she is just as careful of them. She wears no stockings, but incases the feet in elaborately embroidered slippers without heels. Very few of the women in these is lands are well educated. Some, how ever, have been taught in the convents, but their number is very Bmull. The Philippine girl is very fond of music and is generally able to pluy both on the harp and the guitar. The guitar is very popular and might be called the national instrument For the purpose of assisting them in playing the girls allow the thumb nail of the right hand to grow very long. These girls are athletically inclined. They ride and swim with great dexter ity. They are also very fond of danc ing. New prleans Times-Democrat. On Cotton. We had come into the storeroom for torpedoes at the Brooklyn navy yard and the talk turned to high explosives. "We have to keep a sharp watch on the gun cotton," said one of the gun ners who were with me, "to see that it does not get dry and does not get too acid. There is never a day goes by on a battleship but careful inspection is made of the stores of gun cotton. Dip in a piece of litmus paper and see if it comes out bine. If it does, all 1b well, but beware if it comes out red. That means acid, and acid means danger. " "What do you do when it comes out red?" I askoil "Neutralize the acid. You see. gun cotton deteriorates a lot in an acid solu tion. " "Do you always keep the gun cotton wet?" "Always. That's one of the first principles. When it's wet, it's safe; when it's dry, it isn't. Let it have all the water it will soak up, which is about 80 per ceut. " "Suppose you were to touch off some gun cotton here on the ground, what would happen?" "Nothing at all if It wasn't confined. Yon might burn a ton of it like cord wood in a bonfire. But pack it in a tin box, even a flimsy one, and you'll have tun. And, of course, the stronger the box the more fun you'll have." Underground Parle, The Paris of the pavement gay, bright and exhilarating, is fairly fa miliar to us all, but underground Paris, dark, solitary and damp, extending for miles, is comparatively unknown. A part of this area is devoted to the cata combs a valley of dry bones, a garden of the dead ; the rest a garden still more vast provides for the wants, or rather the luxuries, of the living it is devot ed to mushroom culture. Theso subter ranean gardens extend for some 20 miles under the gay capital and are from SO feet to 100 feet beneath the surface. It is very difficult to obtain permis sion to visit them, and even when per mission is obtained it requires some courage to avail oneself of it for the only entrance is, a circular opening like the mouth of a well, out of which a long pole stands. Imperial expansion, as viewed by Rus sia and England, has an iron ring. Progression of a material kind uses rail road ties for stepping stones. The world is tolerably familiar by this time with the prodigious Russian scheme of the Transsiberian railway, one of the largest operations of its kind in the world and one of the most farreaching in its anticipated results. But England is similarly engaged in a tremendous scheme, of which Mr. Cecil Rhodes may be called the father. It is nothing more nor less than a railway from the Cape of Good Hope to the mouth of the Nile, and Cecil Rhodes is now in Eng land lookingforfifty millions with which to carry on the work. That eventually the road will be built through the en tire length of the dark continent no body need doubt, and the building of it will determine the future of Africa. So vast is the modern respect for these great engineering schemes, and for the mon who conduct them, that Cecil Rhodes is at this moment probably the greatest lion in London. It is doubtful if Talleyrand or Luther or Burke or even Shakespoare would gain much at tention in his immediate group. We are told that peers, cabinet ministers, promoters with Munchausen schemes, duchesses longing for tips on "Kaffirs' or South American securities, workmen who cherinh dreams of emigration and bishops solicitous for African souls haunt his hotel and beg for even the briefest interview, as though he had al ready realized his aspiration.
